Can you resist buying a game?

Can I resist? Not really as my Steam backlog has reached the critical mass where it isn't possible to catch up. Not with the current release cycles.

But then again, it really isn't a big deal nowadays. $60 is less than a night out with friends.

Heck, I can barely have 2 decent meals (No fast food junk) with that.

In some cases I can pull myself together and resist buying a game.

For example, right now everyone's playing Diablo III and I learn for my final exam. I know that if I buy this game, my future is ruined hahaha and I fail. So the plan is to pass the exam and get the game.

Sometimes I go to the midnight sales but right now the real life is more important than that.

So, I want to know what PC games (non-mmo or mmo) that you have succesfully resisted buying and promise never to buy for any price. I'll go first:

    Dragon Age 2

    Mass Effect 3

    Tera

Risen 2 (thank you meta critic/users!)

Except "what is a catastrophic failure"?

This is the problem with some "gamers". They have this idea of some "game on the hill" and can't just let go and have fun. I would even go as far as to say that some "gamers" play these games with the intent of just bitchign about them.

As far as your list, I liked DA2 a lot and I'm enjoying Tera very much. Not that they don't have their issues but very few things don't.

    I'm also enjoying Diablo 3.

Basically, I don't buy games I'm not interested in. MAss Effect 3 would be there. Mass Effect as well.

If i'm interested in a game then I do my research. If I see that the game has things I might enjoy then I buy it.

I think in some cases gamers are spoiled and don't know what they want.

Hello, my name is outfctrl, I am a game addict.

I dont spend allot of money on hobbies or blow it on partying.  I spend my money on games, allot of games.  I am a sucker, not for the boxes, but for the sake of buying.

When I am depressed, I buy a game.

When I am sad, I buy a game.

When I am pissed, I buy a game.

When I am horny and no friends with benefits are around, I buy a game

When I am happy, I regret buying all those damn games, get mad again and buy another game

I basically own almost every popular game out there.  It's ridiculous.

    I am hopeless

ME3 and Tera. Later on there will be much more on the list.

    Shouldn't have bought GW2 or D3 but I did.

Been buying games hoping one is good just to be disappointed over and over again.

Passing up games is easy. Collector's editions? Not as much. I've bought cool CEs of games I've barely touched.

I can easily turn my nose to a new game on the market.

But if im in a store and I see a game thats older and I know will soon be worth more than store value, I buy it.

I did it years ago with Final Fantasy 7, I bought 4 original versions and still have them factory sealed XD

LOL, so really when it comes down to it, you don't really play many MMORPG's at all. (well except "the one" of course)

I realize you do beta many of them, but overall you really haven't experienced the full range of most MMORPG's (meaning gotten to end game, max level)

Interesting perspective for one who writes so passionately about them.

In my own case, if it's on a console I don't play it normally, with a few rare exceptions on PC's like Skyrim or Fallout 3 no single player titles to speak of.

While playing many P2P MMO's, I've only dabbled in a handful of F2P's and I have skipped the more more hardcore or indie titles such as DF, MO but I confess to buying Xyson.

It's not a question of resistance, but being discerning.  I do my homework so I'm rarely ever disappointed in a purchase.  I'm also picky about what I play and won't download and try everything that's released just because it's there, even if it's free.  I can usually tell from a distance whether a game for me or not, so it's rare that I end up logged in somewhere, wondering why the f*ck I paid for this garbarge.

Basically, I trust my instincts and my eyes.  If they tell me something sucks, I assume it does and I don't have to "resist" anything.  Otherwise, I'll grab the game and rarely regret it.

I should mention though that I'm much more lenient with inexpensive indie games.  I will drop $5 or $10 on a game at first blush, so long as there's something about it that calls to me.  And even when that goes poorly, I don't feel too bad since I also see it as supporting indie developers who might later make me a gem.  If I were to ever lose that to a big developer like Blizzard, I'd be ticked off.

I'm doing it right now by not pre-ordering TL2, TSW and GW2. I'm not buying The Walking Dead either. Of course, I'm saving for a vacation trip, so I have a reason to not buy the games.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Nah not really, the reason is because i download games like a prick. But i'll be buying Skyrim tommorow (no i have not played it yet)
  • jpnzjpnz Member Posts: 3,529

No, I see no reason to.

It is only $60-max so why resist?

I don't 'resist' buying my coffee from the coffee shop every morning, same here.

Well, not $60 but coffee + bread-thingy is what $15-$20?

Sides, a game lasts longer than a cup of coffee (most of the time). :P

I've actually been doing pretty good with this. I used to buy pretty much every AAA MMO but I always end up back in WoW and amazingly I have taken a hint.

There are VERY few games I buy without checking reviews first. The only game I've preordered in years, was Skyrim. This has saved me lots of money, no doubt. Of course there are temptations, but I've learned to resist them. Currently I'm resisting Skyrim: Dawnguard, and based on reviews, I doubt I'll ever fork out the money for it.

Honestly....while I can usually wait awhile, I have an aversion to buying every MMO I come across.  I can't help it.  I dont' do that with any other game type, so I guess it's good they only come out every so often.  Part of that comes from being bored at the time though, BECAUSE they don't come out often enough, lol.  Catch 22.  Ah, well.  I kind of like this prepurchasing of late.  Makes me not lose sleep over the cost of the game as one can save up for it and have it paid for almost a year ahead of launch.  Like with GW2.

Expansion are another story.  I can wait to buy those.  Unless I'm neck deep in that game or looking to come back to it.  Then I would buy it at launch.  But like MoP or EQ2s expacks?  Yeah, they can wait, if I ever decide to play them again(kind of hoping I've seen the last of them, but 2 years from now when we're all in that waiting on a new MMO limbo, I'll probably cave).

I tend to buy games when I have time off work, otherwise I skip buying stuff. I do recall buying a lot more games when I was between MMOs (after SWTOR but before TSW), mostly older games on sale though.

Never had to resist games as i always came into them with the idea that it was a game for entertainment, as such at the end of the day i would always get my moneys worth, and with sub games it is the same till i fill i am not getting my money's worth i keep my sub. Though many of the new ff series games i have not touched after 10, but that was since by an large they did not look like my style of game, and so would not get me my money's worth. Though i have found too many people treat game series at large almost in a cult kinda way, that unless each game somehow improves the genre or game it is a waste or bad. Even games i found were bad in some way i felt i had gotten my moneys worth out of by merely enjoying what the game had. I always took a game by it's own sole marits, and not largely as a extention of the prior games like a vast majority do *een in movies like with the transformer movies, most see the new ones as garbage when compared to the older series and such, but why compare it to them really since it kinda dimishes both of them when you do.).

    Console/Single player story type stuff....Easily.

I prefer MMOs, but I still stay away from many of those.  I am always looking, as the newer MMOs seem to not hold up as well as some of the older ones did, play time wise for me.

It's easy for me. I've always waited to see how a title is after release.  How a developer supports it and if it's broken mess or something I can enjoy despite what some might call flaws.  Not even once have I got involved with the whole hype deal.  I just don't understand it.  It's literally a martian custom to me.  Simply put, it looks like sheep being led to slaughter more often than not.  I know that is a harsh way of putting it.  It's just the way a see it.  I don't understand why people do it.

If a person buys a game on release and then 1 week later they are on the forums trashing it.  The company does not give a shit.  They got your money why should they care? Diablo 3 is a great example of this.  How many on these forums went out and bought the game then turned around a week or two later started trashing Blizzard because of one thing or another.  RMAH changes or implementation was one of the biggies.  Those people knew before release that it was going to have one.  So why on earth if they had a problem with it would they support the idea by buying that product.  I'm not turning this into a Blizzard rant. I'm saying, tell me that didn't happen.  I read post after post of people doing this very thing.

It's not just one or two posts or people that did this.  It was a lot.  There are blogs all over the net by people who gave their money to a company which made a product and said we are going to have this as a feature.  When it came time for them to implement it people get in a rage? It baffles me.. I have always been a tight ass when it comes to my money which helps.
