I want to preface my comments with some personal background. Sometimes I tie my shoes together instead of indifidually, I'm not a storyline guy and I'm easily annoyed. Ok, thats out of the way...
I could only stomach a few hours of the beta without feeling a mixture of gameplay confusion, underwhelming storyline interest, and not a insignificant amount of questing annoyance. Graphics were good, but amazing or different? No.
With that said, I still won't cancel. I pee $60 worth of energy drinks out in a week, and no monthly sub? No brainer. Might not play, but then again I just might. I certainly won't cancel my preorder.
I love how some folks knock this poll for being inaccurate, yet they point to other polls on the same website, if they dont like that particular game..... re-re's... good times good times...

I'll pre-order when Im not paying console prices for the game. Otherwise I'll get it later in a bargain bin.
Console prices? Console prices are pretty much the same as PC game prices. Some console games are 50$, some are 60$...some PC are 50$, some are 60$. You can't tell me you are so cheap that you are not willing to pay 10$ more then what you are probably expecting (50$) for a pc game.

here console prices are $75, PC prices are $65 and that is what I payed for GW2.
Already canceled, played the beta. HUGE DISSAPPOINTEMNT. Dull and stail just like the rest of the MMO's made these days.
So you played the beta even though you had previously made this statement:
"Yeah and GW2 is still going to be carebear to the max. I'll play SWTOR before ever playing this craphole game with its carebear instance box pvp system. At least in SWTOR I can PvP without jumping into instance battlegrounds."
I am so confused. Between the 19th and the 30th did you manage to buy and play SWTOR and then decide to give that up so you could prepurchase GW2 so you could play in the beta weekend?

In the UK PC games are usually between £29.99 and £34.99. Amazon has been known to even sell new releases as low as £17.99.
Where as console game are usually around the £39.99 - £49.99 mark, and usually only £5 cheaper on Amazon.
So there can be quite a difference. GW2 is way over priced for the region, with it selling at the high end console game price.
Im curious how much you payed for the various games with subs you've played over the years? Sometimes two or three or multiple accounts on the same game.
GW2 has to have cost a few bucks to develop, and then not to charge a sub? It's priced at the exact price the market will bear.
I payed the $59 and I don't even plan on it being my main mmo. I'll continue to sub at swtor.
If you can't afford $59 or whatever the equivalent is in lira or rubels or such, you should get a job or drink cheaper booze or pack smaller bowls so your unemployment or allowance can hack it.
Well using this poll as a indicator...Already 11% of the potential fanbase will be passing on GW2 and we have only experienced the first beta weekend. You can expect the retention rate to continue to dip the closer and closer we get to release, then take a huge nose dive a month or two after release.
Hilarious. This poll is clearly biased against GW2. 3 out of the 4 answers are pretty much against GW2. Yet over 60% of the responses are B. Yet somehow, even against overwhelming odds in this poll, you have managed to transform a vastly positive majority into some kind of prediction of doom.
Well done.
Lets be more realistic shall we?
Now that the beta was out you can expect this majority (represented here) to spread the word. Increasing the player base. You can also expect all the positive press to increase the player base (its rated as the number 1 MMO by every single major review site out there for 2012). You can expect the player base to be far greater than this as well sense here we are talking only about those who preordered. Which is going to be maybe 20% of the community? The player base will then grow exponentially on release due to..well..being released and all of the positive review scores. You can expect the game to continue to grow after that since it is being geared to be a major e-sport much like SC2. Not only that but this is not a subscription game. So nobody ever really leaves. They jump in and jump out whenever they feel like it.
How you got your prediction that the preorders would dwindle anymore than this is beyond me. The people that are keeping their preorders (the vast majority) have already experienced and loved the game in its roughest state. Why would they cancel on the next beta? or the following? makes no sense. If anything the numbers would only grow sense those people are now spreading the word.
You know your logic is off. I know you know it because you are an educated human being.
I'd also like to point out that this is the most negative forum on the planet. If all you guys can muster is 11% here, good luck on your crusade.
Still though people don't seem to be an accurate indicator for anything these days. Both SWTOR and WoW have resoundingly negative polls. More negative than positive. The worst I think was when I saw WoW had a 4% and SWTOR had like 3% of the answers in their favor.
This is actually incredible that an MMO has done this well in a poll, especially one that was clearly hoping for a more negative response.
If this guy is still around I'd kind of like a counter to this.
Just pointing out that you can't cancel if you pre-purchased. Anyone who says they have is lying. That key you received is a retail key that activates your account. Retail stores would have to take a $60 hit for you to return it, and are likely to not do it. If by some measure the employee doesn't realize this, you effectively stole $60 from your local store. Congrats, you are now a thief.
Rrrrrreally...
That is news to me; I was not aware of that. If that's true, that's pretty friggin' lame.
It's not lame. It's in the writing. That's why it is called pre-purchase and not pre-order.
It says it right on the pre-purchase page. Once the beta took place, the codes are 'used'. Not sure how it would work if you bought now and cancelled before the next beta.
Interesting. So they locked you into the $60 purchase in order to get access to beta, and from what I read on the forums the beta was barely playable for a lot of people. I hope you guys that had a rough time getting in recieve another BWE with a better client.
Pretty shady company practice to do that, IMO. Even Star Wars let you cancel your pre-order right up until Early Access, and their practices were pretty shady as well.
I actually agree with you, they should let people cancel.
I played GW2 and feel like it's a great game, let it stand on its own merits. Having a "paid beta" and then not allowing people to cancel their preorder just seems like a dirty marketing tactic. Which is sad because like I said, I think GW2 is awesome and there is seriously no need for these dirty tactics to get money.
Man why is this so damn confusing and hard for people to understand? It's not a PAID BETA, you didn't PAY FOR BETA. You BOUGHT THE GAME, which allows you ACCESS to the beta. When you buy a released game, open it, and happen to not like it, are you EVER allowed to take it back? Nope. How is that any different here? If you had reservations then you should have waited, because ANet made it clear right from the start that this was a full purchase with no returns.
There's literally nothing dirty about it and for you to suggest that is asinine.

I'd agree with you, except for that whole marketing campaign where they used the beta access specifically to sell the pre-purchases. I've got several emails from Anet, GameStop, Amazon, etc. all with the specific message of:
PRE-ORDER NOW FOR BETA ACCESS.
They were clearly using the beta access as a marketing tool, and if you can't (or refuse to) see that then I can't help you.
As for returning games you don't like... yes you can. If there's ever a product you're not happy with, most businesses will take the game back as a return, especially if it's a single player title that they can resell.
I wonder how many people have glanced back at the OP?
The majority of people (out of 1000+) have either not cancelled, or never pre-ordered to begin with, lol. This whole discussion is hilarious, and has basically devolved away from the OP into a debate as to whether or not we 'paid to beta'. Who gives a crap!?
As someone posted earlier. Putting that caviat with the pre-purchasing as a means to get into beta HELPED THE GAME.
Why? Because the vast majority of people who pre-purchased, did so because they are not only interested in GW2, but want it to be a good game. While there was a VERY vocal minority who bought it just so they could try and pull an 'i told you so', I haven't encountered a single person in beta who didn't like the game. Even amongst those that tried to severely downplay it.
Furthermore, on the beta forums, there is a TON of good sugggestions for how to improve the game. I would much rather have that, then a beta full of whiny SOBs who feel like they are entitled to everything, right now, and don't want to pay a dime for it. All in all the community was far better than what I experienced during betas like TERA, or AoC, with the majority of people actually being very helpful to one another, and to the game.
How we spend our money is our own business. You aren't our mother. We can handle our own bank accounts just fine.
Anyone who is attempting to cancel or is calling GW2 carebear clearly did not try out the WvWvW this weekend.
It was incredible and was what I envisioned a DAoC 2 to be like (though, unfortunately with less classes available).
The Eternal Grove server WvWvW was off the charts the entire beta event and I leveled two characters from around 7 or 8 up to high teens just through that alone.
I got to thinking how neat it was going to be when I finally tired of wacking blue and red invaders that I could go back and continue the personal story and area quest lines because of them bringing my toon down in level to suit the area.
The game was downright enjoyable and kept me awake to the wee hours (which is no easy feat at my age) of the morning. I love it when these fruitcakes get all upset because a game doesn't "break the mold", doesn't allow you to keel everyone in sight, has no permadeath and doesn't have enough new, inventive and different mechanics to keep them satisfied (whatever the heck does?), means more space for agreeable folk.

No.
PREtty stupid to read PREorder when it clearly states PREpurchase, the PREsident can tell you PREsently that PRE is just a suffix that PREcedes a word and that what is behind the PRE counts as much as what is after.
It said PREpurchase. Repeat after me: PREpurchase. Do it again please, and again and again.
And no, for MMORPGs since the key is tied to your account (email account, card account), your box is now useless, unless you are able to separate the game key from the account (which is AFAIK impossible). So they shouldn't accept it back.

Some businesses will return games, Gamestop is one of them (and the return window is usually extremely short). Typically, most retailers won't return opened games (the big box retailers who don't resell used games). If the game is defective, then you are allowed to exchange it for the same product or store credit if the product isn't available.
You can rent single player games or get a demo. Many mmos have a trial. You buy a mmo, and you normally can't return it at all.
I will agree with you that ANet used beta as a marketing tool, it's more or less become the standard. Hell, Blizzard got a million folks to lock into WoW for a year based on a free digital copy of D3 and Mists of Pandaria Beta. I don't see how folks are really upset over the use of the marketing tool, especially since it's been done so many times before. The terms were pretty clear, and making a purchase is the same as a contract between the consumer and seller. People need to learn to read the fine print before dropping cash to get into a beta.
Hell, even Gamestop doesn't allow folks to get cash back on the mmo pre-orders that come with beta access. They'll give you store credit only.
And out of curiosity OP, since you're clearly a fan of SWTOR, why did you make this post?
Well, let's be fair, this thread has at least one use... it should that 1 poster out of 4 here didn't even play the game and is talking out of the wrong orifice when pretending it's crap (except maybe 2 or 3 people who happen to be in closed beta of course).
Oh, and you can't cancel the pre-purchase (it's not a pre-order). So the whole thread is pointless anyway.

You can pre-order this game at gamestop and not pre-purchase.......I also cancelled my pre-order to SWTOR to upgrade so, yeah, you can cancell your gamestop PRE_ORDER. BTW I have friends that swap accts all the time....Anyone could have DLed it and let their friends try it out ...Quit with the attempts to call people liars.......I'm going to go play my friends EVE acct. now......Have a nice day!
Sure you can cancel your pre order but considering that the vast majority of those who were in the BWE were those who pre-purchased, those who pre-ordered AND got into beta are in a tiny minority. So, are you going to tell me that everyone who has "cancelled their pre-order" happened to get into the beta just by signing up or gettin a beta key? I doubt that very much.
Besides, most of those who want to cancel are saying they want their money back. A pre-order doesn't actually take their money until the game comes out. So, by saying they want their money back for a pre-order they are proving that they are indeed lying.
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

not being a fanboy here, just thinking realistically. GW2 wont be in a bargain bin for at least a couple of years, or until the next expansion. it's gonna sell insane amounts, and im telling you right now, it will eventually hit WoW numbers. it will sell without any price reductions, so retailers would be insane to lower the price. you can keep dreaming though.
If you were thinking realistically you'd realize that all the top selling games end up going for around 20 bucks sooner or later. Most games you can find new copies for around 20-40 bucks in less than a year. Forgot to add that I will prob grab this game on the cheap down the road. Its a good game.
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

Sonoggi is right. GW Prophecies was still at original price until after the factions campaign and even then it only dropped to $40 and that was a year later. Prophecies kept the same price through the Nightfall expansion even though the expansion ended up being cheaper. If the game sells well on it's own merits, there will be no reason to drop the price. If you want to see the price hit bargain bin, you'd better start hoping the cash shop plays a bigger role.

It absolutely exceeded my expectations. On paper this game is so far from my personal 'Dream MMO', but after playing it I'm probably going to have to reconsider what qualities I'm really after in an MMO. They seem to have thought of everything, we were continually impressed with the positive impact seemingly minor details had.
It took awhile to get used to the idea of not dreading the sight of other random people in the world after all the years of conditioning. It was such a nice change to see that, on every level of play, other people being around is desirable rather than an inconvenience.
This is the first time in a long time that I wasn't disappointed after actually trying a game. Even if this game ends up only entertaining me for a few months (which seems unlikely, I think I'm addicted), the impact this game will have on how future games are made is undeniable - they've found elegant answers to so many long standing MMO problems.
Excellent fun, we're very excited for the next event.
I totally agree with this.
GW2 met my expectations and, in many ways, is the MMO I have been hoping and waiting for since I first started playing MMOs almost 13 years ago.
The game isn't perfect, but that just leaves room for improvement on the new framework that GW2 has established. When I say it isn't perfect, that doesn't mean it isn't phenominal, because it is, but I can also see it as the trail blazer for a new form of MMORPG moving forward. Not only does GW2 raise the bar by a large amount, but it places the bar at the head of a new path for MMO design.
I'm also ooking very much forward to the next WBE and anticipate playing this game over the long term once it launches.
I hope they don't grant refunds. A refund is not a guaranteed thing, it's not smoething you're suppose to get. When you buy something you sign a contract.
One of the benefits I received for buying the game was access to beta. Once you receive that benefit, you have essentially began the benefits of the purchase.
IF I buy tickets to a movie, i can't watch 10 minutes of the movie and ask for my money back.

Actually, if the movie is NOT what you were expecting, you definately can talk to the manager. You most likely won't get your money back, but will get tickets to another movie (at least that's how it works up here)
If ArenaNet is smart, they WILL allow refunds. It's just good customer service, and will save them a LOT of grief from chargebacks (Yes, those do have a detrimental effect on the company being charged back)

Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!
If you want to see the price hit bargain bin, you'd better start hoping the cash shop plays a bigger role.
not being a fanboy here, just thinking realistically.

I picked up a GW1 box at Gamestop for 19.99 back in '06.

It's just good customer service, and will save them a LOT of grief from chargebacks (Yes, those do have a detrimental effect on the company being charged back)
My wife plays DAOC.Has for almost 10 years.(I'm currently in remission from my DAOC addiction).I hope to convert her to GW2.She LOVEs rvr.
Sooooo...heck no I'm not cancelling :-)
