Let's talk retention

allegriaallegria Member CommonPosts: 682

a. I have not tried Gw2 yet but anxious to do so.

b. have read quite a bit about the structure/gameplay etc...

For those more experienced or in the know, what do you think about GW2 will hold people ?

The obvious that comes to mind is the WvWvW stuff, but being a "separate game" I question how much personal interest I would have in that...

Love to hear others thoughts on "retention" and things GW2 brings that will keep people around after they "see the content".

If the PvP is like guildwars then that will definitely make me stay.

Well look at it this way, 5+ years later after the original game releases people still came in droves to play Guild Wars. I suspect it will be the same thing for Guild Wars 2 if not better.

The PvP will be one big factor in retention but also the gametipe encourages the alt making (waypoints and downleveling makes it easy for friends to gather and play even if one is lvl 1 and the other 80), also the game not having fees makes it easy for players to leave for a time and then come back at any time, so if Anet want this to happen they will have to release expansions and new content wich is great in my opinion.

The WvsWvsW is fun and done very well, imo. There are a lot of DAOC vets that have just been waiting for something like this to come along for years. I think if the WvsWvsW stays great, the game can last a long time. Myself, my family, my friends, & my guildies are all DAOC vets from release until ToA arrived and kinda killed the game for us. We've just been waiting for something like GW2 WvsWvsW to come along and attract us to play for years and years. Finally, several hundred of us have a place to play some massive pvp battles again.

I am mainly just messing with you, but I would say that retention on a Buy to Play game is very good.  I still pick up and play my GW accounts and it isn't even a real MMO as some would.

Seriously  though I believe it will be very good.   I am sure occasionally during new MMO launches that it may take a hit to the number of active players, and maybe when WoW Xpansions come out, but past that I would expect it to maintain it's playerbase fairly well.

I don't see permanent and consistent retention. People will ebb and flow in and out of the game, and since it's B2P that's totally fine for ANet.

No sub, so you can leave and come back with no hassle of re-activating credit cards, etc.

PvP, which is an ever evolving game

Planned expansions in depth (they have said they will add events to existing areas without telling you, so you always have an incentive to explore.)

8 professions, each of which seems to be quite deep.

    A huge world to explore.

I'd be surprised if people get bored quickly - I stll played GW1 a lot 4 years after it came out.

I really enjoy gw, and gw2.  While playing the beta I really loved the experience, amass of players rolling together completing the events as we go. What happens if you miss that initial start, or you reroll or create another toon two years later.  That group may be a lot smaller, will it still be a fun, will the elite mobs be killable?

    This.

It's a good game but it's not the end-all MMO like some people are making it out to be. The end game might be fun but it too will get stale after awhile. There's only so many points you can earn in PvP/WvW before you think, "I'm done with this, starting to feel grindy".

    I love GW2.

But, if it was like GW1, I wouldn't touch it. I couldn't stand that game.

I really don't think it will hold people PVE wise. I think it will end up being a side game that people play when they have some free time or want something different after they have completed the majority of the events a few times on some alts. I just didn't see something that different in the dynamic events. I don't see what would keep people playing the events over and over when there isn't a treadmill of rewards. Sure the events were fun the first time, but I don't think they are so fun that I would want to keep doing them too many times. Also, even though it was kind of neat to see people working together, the soft grouping really kills some of the social aspects of the game. Since you don't really have to group in the traditional sense, people don't really communicate......though this might be a plus for those who like to solo everything and not have to directly interact with the people around them. The one meta event I experienced also was a bit of a let down as it was more of a spam fest zerg as opposed to a coordinated effort. I think the PVP people will love the game though.......  Anyway, this is just my opinion for what it is worth.

GW1 never adopted the typical repetitive MMO endgame pioneered by the original online games and refined in WoW.  Nor do I expect that from GW2.  GW1 provided elite instances, Hard Mode, and the best PvP I've experienced in a massive online game.  Of course, there were also updates and new stories (campaigns and expansions).  The dev blogs on the GW2 site talk about some of the things they have planned for GW2, like dungeons that are not the same when you redo them.  Reading those can tell you more about what GW2 will offer than anyone on these boards can.

Now, as to opinions.  Gw1 was my first game, and I played it religiously for 3 years (until ANet stopped focusing on it to work on GW2).  I still play it sometimes.  No other MMO has kept me interested for more than 10 months.  The GW2 gameplay I experienced in the BWE was enough to have me thinking about deleting some of the games I have on my hard drive, as their gameplay seems stilted and contrived in comparison.

Given my history with ANet and the recent limited weekend experience, I believe there will be sufficient meat, both in the game at launch, and in the down-the-road updates, expansions, etc. to hold me for as long or longer than GW1 did.  I realize that this is all "faith" on my part, but that, the hype and a 3-day experience is all that is available to base an opinion on.

GW2's box price is the same as ME3's, and it promises more to do than ME3 (which, for many people, is a one-and-done affair).  With no sub fee, it seems like a bargain.

Hmm.. maybe they should promise special items at the end of each GW2 expansion to keep people coming back.  Good idea.

I think there is not going to be raiding correct ? ( I am not really a raider anymore anyhow so, that does not really matter so much to me).

Personally i would like to know:

    a. Is there enough "leveling content" for multiple playthroughs  - basically when I alt i do it for 1 of 2 reasons ( both would be fabulous )

       1. To play the same content with a different class and thus, approach

       2. To play different content

    b. Is there any meaning to pvp ? For example, i understand there is a large pvp zone for WvWvW, can people build structures in  it ? defenses ? or things like that ? Or is it a static playfield ?

I am a vanguard player for the mostpart these days and mostly beacuse of A ( there are enough good classes and there is enough content to not see it all in a long, long time ). This is not to say that i don't leave and return ( and likely will for Gw2 ) just  trying to gauge the following

Is this my modern vanguard replacement ( i.e. perma-home with enough to do to keep coming back and back and back  ) or is this a few month run type of game.

I'll be happy if I get 2 months out of it.

I got just over 2 months out of SWTOR (not counting 6 months in beta)  so I think 2 months isn't too much to ask.

If we pretend they won't add nothing to the game, it won't have years of retention in the PVE area, that's if we just say they won't add nothing to the game.

There is plenty to keep me retained but that's [me] and not [you] so it depends on what you look for, I've decided that it'll be my MMO that first place a home in, since it's a themebox and I'll just wait for a sandpark to come out for example ArchAge which will be atleast a year or 2 I think, but who knows A-NET might bring a more "end game" incintive  rather thanraids, I mean they luckily done it with the scale down feature meaning every thing they add they can add to the entire game for everyone to enjoy rather than having to grind to it. Holiday events and GW 1 methods.

After all they copied GW 1 more than any game, I can elaborate if one wants me too, I never thought about it myself until Torv said something but I also realised where they [most] likely got their ideas from PVE wise.

    Hope this helps :/

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)

Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.

I played about 38 hours over the course of the WBE. I had intended to do crafting, PVP and WvW, on top of the PvE, but never did get around to any of it. Even with the limited access to only some of the zones from level 1-25, I ended my experience feeling I had only sampled a small portion of the content that was available.

A typical beta weekend for other games has usually seen me fit in about 6-16 hours, usually long enough to get a solid taste of the game, while also realizing that I really don't want to have to retrace my steps again at launch. With GW2, not only could I not get enough, I look forward to re-experience the same ground when the game goes live.

This is the first MMO beta since the WoW beta that has given me this kind of beta experience.

GW2 has a bit of a learning curve. Not only for learing a new profession, new skills, new features and new mechanics, but also to unlearn habits from other MMOs that just don't translate into GW2. However, I think most people who stick with it will start to gel with the game the more they play and retention rates will be huge. Add in the Buy to Play business model, which allows people to play as much, or as little, as they wish on a day to day basis, with out worrying about justifying a subscription fee and I see GW2 as a game that will snowball over time.

There is a very good chance that GW2 will be one of those very rare MMORPGs that continues to grow customers substantially over time, while having a very large portion of customers playing at least casually, month to month, over the long term.

I think of this GW2 like league of legends as long as players enjoy the structured Pvp people will keep playing. Also, you do not have to grind up another character just to pvp with it. This will enable everyone to easily swap proffessions if they get bored of one. I was mainly looking foward to the PvE stuff in beta but structured pvp was what I mainly did this weekend.

Even if you master one of the many spec in pvp their are still so many others to try. The skill needed to use builds greatly varies. 8 professions, +10 30pt dual trait specs, and multiple weapons that each class can try in pvp. I only got to try a few of the elemental spec and I did not have enough time to perfect my builds or playstyle. This was one of the best elementalist pvp videos I found Xlayer Elementalist PvP. The video is sped up so you can see the action faster. D/D spec elementalist is a hard build to pull off in pvp.
