How similar to GW1 is it?

I havent read much of anything about GW2 yet. I bought the orig GW and played a little but really didnt like it. Is GW2 very similar? what are the main differences?? wondering if I should bother looking into it, or is it just the same game with better visuals? thanks all!

Not really. It shares the setting and the lore, that's about it. Also the art style is similar.

GW2 is like an actual MMO, where as GW1 could be considered a lobby game.

Completely different in just about every way.  It's easier to compare similarities.... The lore (though it's 300? or so years in the future), similar bestiary, some of the same areas are still around, (though radically different as you might suspect in 300 years time) and... well that's about all I can think of.  Oh, and it's developed by Arenanet.

only the lore is the same

There are times when one must ask themselves is it my passion that truly frightens you? Or your own?

    This ^

Setting, lore, and art style are very 'guild wars'. Everything else about the game is very much different. Different mechanics, same IP.

It is philosophically and artistically similar, but mechanically different in nearly every way.

I want to say (and I hope someone comes up with a better analogy if this is not apt), Guild Wars 2 is to Guild Wars 1 as World of Warcraft is to Warcraft 3.

I agree. You can believe this is the same game world as GW1, 250 years later (and in much, much higher detail), but game play and game design are extremely different and greatly improved.

Is it different yes, but it also has similarities apart from just lore.

Gear is more or less treated the same way. Every level 80 will have access to maxed gear without much trouble and gear grinding is just for cosmetic reasons.

GW1 Quests and GW2 Events both can influence the world, though in GW2 it is temporary where as in GW1 it would become permanent.
