Synopsis of classes?

Dark_SkuraiDark_Skurai Member Posts: 106

I've been keeping a close eye on Tera ever since I played one of the beta weekends. I myself won't be buying it for at least a month though -due in one part finals, and another cautious nature with MMO given I've been playing them for years. I believe fully that you should wait 1-2 months before purchasing: games like SWTOR, WAR, and Conan have made that clear.

That said, one remark that I see repeated -over and over and over- is that alot of people don't get hooked till two things:

1. lv 20-25

2. They get the right class.

These two things seem so fundamentally important that I think something that will do new players very well is a brief synopsis of each class, detailing pros, cons, and general opinion. If people could put their own thoughts to classes here, I think I can collect them all and do this task. I want this game to do well, I want the norm of MMO in the future being dodging and a end to tab targetting, and that can only happen if Tera does well.

The home websites for the game describe enough of the questions you are asking about classes I suggest you go visit them and read.

Technically, this game has been out for a year in Korea, it was just localized for NA, so you are well past that 1-2 month waiting period after a new MMO has launched.

Your first point is correct, so far I've gotten to level 24 on my highest and it's still a bit boring.  The first 20 levels of this game are pretty much filler, hate when they do that.

You second point, I too would like to know more as the official synopsis on the Tera website for each class doesn't really cover how they truly play, more like their general aspects.  For example, I'm finding my sorcerer, while dps is more single target than AOE and is all about kiting and some minor CC.  I've watched Archer vids and I would say they are more AOE oriented and also fairly decent at kiting.   So yeah, I would like to see more indepth analysis on the classes, too.

Level 20-25 is mentioned for a few reasons. The first is that required group content starts at 20 with BAMs and Bastion of Lok (the first instanced dungeon). Secondly level 20 is roughly where you'll be when you leave Oblivion Woods and up until then the zones are nice but pretty linear and closed in. Leaving OW for Celestial Hills/Valley of the Titans sees an opening of the zone map where it's less claustrophobic. For me this was about level 16 because I refuse to quest grind :).

On classes the best thing to do is search YouTube for "TERA guide". I know there are a ton for the Warrior just by one guy. That would be more fuitful than searching here because of the visual aspect.

Just not worth my time anymore.

Oh I did say "few" reasons and only added two. I think another "wait until 20-25" has to do with your class. Like a lot of games you don't get a full idea of your class's potential until you get a good array of abilities. By the time you hit 20-25 you should have enough tools to really understand what you're dealing with. Or watch YouTube videos ahead of time :p

The lvl20-25 and class thing is exactly why they added the prologue, where you can start at level 20 to try a class, then it reverts you back to lvl 1 to play the game. This can optionally be skipped if you already know what you want to play.

Also as someone else mentioned the game has already been out for a year and feels polished like a game that has been out for a year, very noticable.

As for classes, its hard to sum them up, I will try to give comparisons to other games as reference:

Archer - Tough to peg, not quite like playing a FPS, a little slower. My friend mains one and says its similar to Warhammer's Elf Archer or Shadowbane archers.

Berserker - Lumbering beasts needing good timing and aim on hits, huge burst.

Lancer/Warrior - Reminds me of playing Dark Souls/Demons Souls, where dodge/block are incredibly useful.

Slayer - Reminds me of playing Darksiders

Sorc - Can't really think of any game that reminds me of playing the Sorc, I got one to 21, but still very unique. Lots of AoE dmg, very mobile (have to be!).

Mystic/Priest - Mostly PvE centric healers (PvP is rough on healers), not your typical MMO-healers (can't just select health bars and heal) a lot of movement and aim, nothing I can think of is similar.
