If 'heroic dungeons' are in the very first press release article ever, It's a WoW clone.
Currently playing - FF14ARR Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.
It is of course subjective and my opinion depends on me not liking those features at all. And since a good game not having those features is very important from my POV it is close to 100%. If I have to endure those features the rest of the game will not make much difference. I will not enjoy it.
One could argue that you just described Skyrim.....(except for the PvP part)
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???
You guys do realize that every game we talk about on this site is a clone, right? A Dungeons and Dragons clone. That's pretty much where all this stuff started.

Not all aspects of WoW's mechanics are bad ideas, so if another game wants to borrow SOME ideas from WoW, as long as they add user-friendly features without detracting from the enjoyment of the game, then so be it.
A lot of WoW's features are cloned from other MMO's, with a little original flair thrown in so Blizzard can call them its own.
Other features are refined, such as taking the basic matchmaking concept and adding it to the MMO environment as a "Group Finder".
WoW just simplified the experience so the average consumer could partake in the MMO experience, so no other MMO stands out enough to qualify as the originator of such features.
Maybe it's the "themepark" clones that are the real nuisance. Everyone is running on the same tracks, and it's the same experience every time, and the journey's not even being made that interesting. The storylines are uninspired and lack challenge, the end-goals are unfulfilling, and there's no variety or choice at the end of the road.
Well after GW2 beta weekend , I noticed that GW2 wasn't getting this label of being a WoW Clone, like I seen from other MMO.
but I can see it being compared to games like Rift,Tera, Warhammer, AoC, Aion
but all these games are what people on this site call, WoW Clones.
This had me wondering and theorizing over what determines what is or isn't a WoW clone to the community.
so I figured, it has to be some sort of percentage of similarities that determine which MMO games get considered WoW clones or not.
well, what percentage of a MMO has to be similar to WoW to be considered a WoW clone, from your point of view
I don't have a percentage. To me, the thing that makes a game a "wow clone" to me is the "bread crumb quest trail" concept.
I get it, quests exist, and they are the primary way to level. But, seriously, can we avoid the bread crumb feel? I think that may be the thing that irks me most.
Quests are rarely anything world-spanning, (or even zone spanning) its beomce "Go to quest hub A. Complete the quests at Hub A (which all are within an area concentrated around A), then get a quest that takes you to Hub B, repeat.
To me, ANY game that does this, is a "WoW clone" regardless of its genre, class structure, etc. Champions Online: Superhero WoW Clone. Lotro: Tolkeinesque WoW clone, Rifts: Wow Clone, TOR: Star Wars WoW clone.
This isn't a rag on "Theme Park" game either. I happen to like Theme Park. I just hate the extreme that Wow clones have reached...
Then its your duty to stop buying them and push studios to work outside and away from the WoW design formula .
I don't compare every single MMO to WoW. That's just silly. Sure some may be similar, but WoW is similar to those that came before it, so this tired arguement is invalid.
They are all MMOs, people! There is bound to be a similar baseline feature set.
WoW was not similar to MMO's that came before it I don't recall WoW having:
There are many other features too long to list here that WoW and all the other WoW clones and wannabes don't have these features existed in MMO's at a time when the few MMOs that were out there before being an oversaturated market of the same game did their best to stand out from one another unlike today they don't even try to reintroduce a lot of these features into their game when it expands your game it may not be a important focus of the game but it keeps players engaged in another activity in your game to do once people tire of raids and instanced pvp which thats all these MMOs post- WOW are the same thing over and over with a little twist.

e.g. Grey white green blue purple names for item quality.
Talent trees where you spend one point per level on one of three trees, reaching a new tier every 5 points.
Attacks that build combo points, up to a maximum of five, and finishers that spend those combo points with their effect scaling by number of points.
That sort of thing.
It's kinda like porn....you can't describe it but you know what it is when you see it.

Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!
Everything is just a clone of Meridian.
