I'm very interested in trying out the combat and seeing if the way the setting/lore is handled in the game is appealing to me, but 50 bucks is an expensive trial for a game I otherwise have no sense of whether I might be playing even more than a week. I've spent as much or more on other games, but I expected to be playing them months later (and certainly have gotten burned by some).

I get that putting pressure on people to buy "sight unseen" because they feel they're missing out is a sales strategy, but -- ugh -- if I got to play even just for a weekend and the game grabbed me, I'd be happy to send my money their way to add to first week/month sales.

Jebus! The OP is asking about TERA not GW2. Last time i checked this was not the GW2 forum...

OP if you like high level anime graphics and unconventional combat, i'm sure Tera will be more than worth it. Questing is somewhat generic but gets more exciting as you start to encounter BAMs and i hear they are revamping the starter-area also.

The combat is not for everyone as it has animation locking (think Aion, just much better implemented) for just about every skill but as you reach higher levels, you gain access to glyphs which can shorten the animation lock on abilities. Some praise the combat in Tera as the best, some not so much.

Tera has a lot of other stuff going for it as well but if you don't like the points above then maybe Tera is not for you, otherwise go for it!

It's a great game to play to kill time until something better is out there.  The combat is unique, the dungeons are fun, and the zones are quite imaginative.  The problems with the game lie within the fact that it's fairly grindy in that the quests are little else than repetitive kill/collect quests and within the fact that the engame content is somewhat broken at the moment.

Leveling is fast, probably too fast for the small amount of content available at endgame at release.  The fact that EnMasse allowed players to keep their open beta toons only exacerbates this problem.  I've been playing fairly casually and even only a couple days after release, I am level 36 thanks to the beta weekend and the headstart.  There are already level 60s running around.

For a diversion until GW2 though, I think your money is well spent, especially if you'd like to try a more traditional MMORPG with a unique spin on combat.

You should buy it. It's a wonderful game. What I love about Tera is that it's had a minimum of fuss made about it, everybody has been writing it off because GW2 is apparently going to be the second coming. It's quietly slipped in under the radar, and it's FUN.

Sure it's got none of the bells and whistles that GW2 has, but it's got very visceral and immediate combat mechanic that promotes lots of movement and advance and retreat decision making, an elegant new take on the talent system in the form of glyphing, guild versus guild combat, presidential elections, an Outlaw PK system, beautiful graphics that scale awesomely well, lovely art style that really does sit where east meets west....it has stuff that entertains basically.

A AAA MMORPG that encourages a console action game approach to combat yet has plenty of depth and lots to do? Yum yum.
