So, I bought Tera for no specific reason, just because I thought "meh, why not", never having played it before or anything.
All in all I'm pleasantly surprised, it is actually fun.
So, my first character, a lancer, hit level 20, and I went into the first dungeon as a tank. Told everyone that this was the first time I was in a dungeon in Tera, people said it's no problem and were friendly, so all good.
Apart from having problems to keep anything like aggro, and dying every now and then, following things confused me:
I went into the dungeon, and thought I might get some quests, but didn't. Not sure where to get them, probably near the dungeon entrance? I don't know.
And the white items that dropped belonged to the person that picked them up. Which means that in combat, you constantly had to search the chaos for items and try to grab them before others do. Since it was the first time I was in a dungeon, and tanking, that was a bit much for me, resulting me in getting nearly nothing in matters of white items, despite me needing certain runes badly for crasting. I checked the tooltip for the loot rules, and it said something like "round robin for greens and better".
The green items were given out at random. Even green boss drops. Boss died, dropped a green, someone picked it up. No roll or anything. Even clicking on the item name in the chat didn't reveal anything. That was a bit annoying. I didn't know what dropped or why that person got it.
We then killed the final boss, and some blue items dropped. Slowly getting used to the "pick up what you can", I picked some blue up, and someone picked one up as well. I didn't know what it was prior to picking it up, because I just saw the name of the item on the ground. It was some warrior item I couldn't use. Someone else got two lancer items. There was again no roll or anything, and we couldn't trade either. So while I needed badly lancer items, the blue lancer items were lost on players who couldn't use them, and I was stuck with warrior items.
All in all we spent about 30 to 45 minutes in the dungeon I guess, and I got 0 useful loot and just about 20% xp of the next level.
So while the people were friendly, this was the first really bad experience I had in Tera.
Anyone got an advice? I don't want to go to another dungeon, spend there nearly an hour, and come out again with empty hands. I don't need always tons of loots to have fun, but seeing items I could need go to people that don't need them and no trade beeing possible, or roll or anything.. It's just slightly aggravating.
So, how can I make sure that the loot goes to the person that needs it? Different loot settings? Threaten people to leave the group if they don't change it? And what to do against the "he who picks it up gets it". I want to focus on the combat, I don't want to pay constantly attention on items that drop and having to fight my way past the mobs, instead of tanking, to the loot, before other players get there.

Didnt read most of it sorry was a yadayada story. Did pick up on one thing though, it doesnt seem as though you waited till you picked up the dungeon quests, this nets you a bundle of xp and some loot and then it opens up repeatable quests.
Okay, well the loot issue is with the settings for your party. Whoever the leader is has to change it so there is a roll on green items. You can do this by right clicking your portrait and going into loot options.
Your quest issue is because the story quests are the starting point for each dungeon, once you get the story quest that tells you to go into the dungeon, there is usually a few outside that you get. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they are at the vanguard outpost, or maybe a little encampment right before it. It starts with a quest to kill basilisks, but eventually you run out of quests there and you just get one to go back, and theres like 5 quests for the first dungeon at that camp. It's a chain to get the dungeon quests.
But yeah with the loot options there is a round robin option, which is turn based. You want to set it to uncommon items or better, and have it set to roll the dice. Then you will roll for all greens, whites will still be a pickup based on whoever gets it first, but they are generally useless.
That's a bit rude. They were simply asking for help. You don't have to say it's a yada yada story, they are explaining the situation in enough detail to get a response to their specific issue.
As another said, this was a problem with how the "loot" was set.
other than that, and following the quests that lead you to the dungeon, I would say that you should use your "shout" as much as possible (I think you have this by lvl 20).
Also, get used to attacking and immediately blocking until you get used to how the mobs/boss attacks. Otherwise you will be attacking and wham you are going to get it. keep in mind that your regular attack builds power. First hit builds a little, second time builds more and third time even more. you migh not have a lot of time to do all three hits.
try to turn the boss/mobs away from the party. If you can get up against some structure that could help but keep in mind that large BAMS can also get right into your face and it's hard to see what's going on. You will also get a self heal at some point and this can be a huge help.
Remember to use glyphs and even gems for weapons that help build threat.

I offered help did I not? What else do you want. I could have said Wall'o'text crits me instead...no pleasing some people or am I being trolled hmm. At least I offered some advice all you did was troll me.
Loot aside they are. Blast right? Even with a Lancer and Mystic doing a great job it still had a feeling of chaos at times... I like this
Just not worth my time anymore.
For one the item thing was that way because the party leader did not change the loot settings for the pary. and quests are give mostly outside the instance do the quests in the area and you will then recive missions for said instance/.
Thanks for the replies. I guess I will then keep questing until I reach the dungeon quests, and go into the dungeon once or twice again before that happens, while paying more attention to the loot settings.
I did use the shout quite often, with a glyph that increases it's threat generation. But most of the time the mobs kept just running in all directions. And in boss fights I sometimes ran out of mana, which means that I couldn't follow the bosses anymore, since they were jumping around like crazy. And when I can't reach the boss, I can't generate mana. But I guess a game with a learning curve is better than one which is so easy that there is nothing to learn. :P

It's a bit of a trick to manage your power over attacking. sometimes I will attack/block/attack/block etc for a bit just to get a bit of power (mana).
You will eventually get a "leash" skill and that can stun a mob or even pull it (it stuns bams but doesn't seem to pull them) and will also help draw the mob's attention.
The thing is, every time you block and are hit then you lose a bit of power. That's where it becomes more about getting experience on what to do. Also, keep in mind that if you run a small bit you can avoid getting hit and generate a bit of power. Remember to actually go into skills (hit k) and go to glyphs and actually assign your points. Just buying them and right clicking them doesn't activate them. Especially with the really helpful "pump" glyph that will generate power.
