Guild Wars 2: Ascalonion Catacombs Dungeon Playthrough!

KaeyiDreamKaeyiDream Member UncommonPosts: 76

Hey all,

These are a few video's showing the Ascalonion Catacombs, a level 30 dungeon in Guild Wars 2! This video is edited from the view points of the Warrior and the Elementalist. Switching view points from two professions was highly requested by my current subscribers.

The group consisted of a level 28 Elementalist, level 28 Warrior, level 28 Guardian, level 32 Warrior and a level 31 Thief.

This was our first time running the dungeon, our feedback from this was very well received by an Arena Net dev and hopefully some exciting changes will be made based on our experience.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Any feedback or just you sharing your experience of the dungeon would be great, I can also pass this along to various dev's.

Kaeyi x

    Interesting.

Aww, it brought a bit a tear to my eyes. I still can't believe that let the thrice damned Charr be playable! They invaded and murdered and stole our lands! I will not rest till I see the last Charr dead!! Muahahaha. *shakes fist* XD

EDIT: Oh my, after watching most of it, it kinda confirmed my fears that GW2 involves A LOT of dying. Somehow it seemed to me your characters were dead every few moments. :(

It looked very fun. Thank you for the links.  I really need to stop watching these videos.

It was fun to play glad you enjoyed it, the third part will be up today.

In regards to dying alot this is what beta is for.. To fine tune things an balance difficulty.

Also three of us were below intended level.

Nice! Thanks for the uploads. Wish they still had the insta-30 vendor to give more people a chance to try out the dungeons.

I noticed in the first video you cut a lot between your character & one of the char warriors. Wouldn't mind it, except the warrior's quality is a pretty big drop for yours, so it's somewhat jarring to go from 1080p to like 240 and back again.

is it bad when anytime you view a mmorpg video its just not that exciting :D
Playing it is I expect. Just you watch a mmorpg video and it seems boring as hell.
That's not to criticise the OP, thanks for the video on it, just I expect some people know what I mean. It was the same when I watched videos for Vanguard when it was upcoming.

It also involves a lot of coordination to NOT die. If you know your class and know your spec, you won't drop once in that dungeon. I can almost guarantee it. Same way it is in every game.

    This is not a game.

This is very true, as much as i wish i could claim im the most epic Guild Wars 2 player ever, it is a big change and you need to spend time to re learn how to play.

This being our first run through of the dungeon and first time playing together in general we did pretty well.

Next time we will be able to learn from our mistakes and complete it in a lot faster time i am sure.

Take into consideration the fact that some of the people are level 28 and the dungeon is for lvl 30. From what I noticed during my playtime in the BWE, two levels make a huge difference when it comes to the difficulty. :)

The jumps to the charr warrior are staggering, his video quality is TERRIBLE.

To those of you saying how boring this is, go watch a video of some wow players clearing a level 20 dungeon and tell me how exciting that is in comparison. Not every second of the game needs to be awe-inspirining and ground-breaking.

Well, not to play devil's advocate, but that was only the story-mode. That's basically as easy as it's supposed to get, when it comes to dungeons.

GW1 was much the same way. Both games will challenge you, but you will be able to complete them if you try enough times. Also, make no mistake, dying IS a big part of this game. Except to die (or at least, be downed) a good amount of times as you're learning the game. However, unlike other games, it's not as big of a deal in this game as it is in other MMOs.

For example, even though Kaeyi's group members were dying quite often, they were still able to res quite frequently, and it's not an automatic fail if half your team dies.

This game will challenge you, but Anet also wants to make the game so that everyone can experience the main content if they put the time in. It'll be fine =)

I don't believe you becuase i read in another thread current active that GW2 is super easy and there is no challenge to it.. So you must be wrong , the tera fan couldn't be.

Don't forget moments like 10:20 of the first video where the Ascalonian Warrior was smacking you (mostly with cleave damage) for a solid 11 seconds as you said, "I'm focusing on the monk.  He's dead in a second.  Oh, god.  The warrior one-shot me!"

The ol' 11 second long, slow, painful one-shot :p

Don't get me wrong.  I'm sure many of my deaths were similar.  I just don't think you should chalk it all up to being underleveled and not having your elite skills, like you did in the ToT podcast.  It's difficult--to be sure--but I don't think it's *too* difficult, even for level 28s.

I dont think its is too difficult, we cleared the dungeon on our first time in there.

Its obviously not too difficult. :)

Yea on the ToT podcast the other guy said they didnt wipe once, so dont brand it super hard after 1 try^^

As for the videos the sound of you all, especially you Kaeyi is too loud compared to the ingame sound. Try make it lower next time:)

This is because they were trying to tank and spank too much.  You really can't do that against a champion level mob unless you take a very specific combination of builds.

With a combination of cripples/stuns and some movement they would have done much better.  In fact that I don't they realized that captain was a champion at first.

That encoutner is clarly a "training" encounter since its so close to a spawn.

What you notice is that champions has a VERY damaging AoE.  The Key to that fight is clearly avoid that AoE.  He chases and then has a big hitter.  If can either circle kite him or cripple and dodge you would die probably not all.

If instead you have half your party in constant melee range you will probably die 40 times.

I didn't get to level 30 early enough to try this stuff :( Probably only about 5 hours left in the beta and I didn't even know where to go to get this started. I was looking forward to it, too v-v I hope we get to keep our characters, there's conflicting reports about whether we do or not, and I'd like to give this a go.

As someone with a heavy action game background, I want to see how much of this perceived difficulty is innate, as opposed to bad gaming habits (read: sitting there taking damage)

Well also being -2 to a mob means you take quite a bit more damage.  Its very noticable.
