The American price is $59.99, I think it evens out to the euro pretty well (46 Euros)--althought I believe companies like to round up to the nearest 10th--which is probably why they put it up at 49 euros. I think that is a little cheap of NCSoft and Arena Net, but if you look at the quality of game you are getting plus no monthly fee I think it's still a worthy purchase. I would have willingly spent 63 dollars to buy GW2 and not have to pay the monthly fee. I think it's a fair price, even if it's over what us in the USA are having to pay.

I personally would pay $100. The game is free entertainment after the initial payment if you have self control. Thats just me though! I am older than most of you, and my only real hobby is taking care of my yard (yes I like gardening) and playing mmorpgs/rpgs.  I might have a problem paying the OPs price if there was a subscription, but I would probably do it anyway! :)

considering GW2 has no monthly fee...i think the price is a bit low actually :)

Most expensive has been £39.99 and to me thats too expensive as well..

I just bought Starcraft 2 (remember it has been out for a while) for $59.99. You kind of over-exaggerating there... That is mainly nintendo ds prices lol.

Notice i am using the £ sign thats because im in the UK and thats the currency we use..

$59.99 works out to be about £37 and if you just paid that for SC2 then thats your fault a quick check on amazon in the USA and its $45 could have saved yaself some cash there.. i am also sure there are cheap sites in the US..

anyway £50 works out to be about $80.. would you be happy paying $80 for a game?

@themehospital im not poor either but i didnt get the money i have now by buying overpriced products..

Oops, I did not notice the signs there, sorry. And yes, I could have gotten it cheaper, but I hate ordering digitally or online, I like to get the physical copy of the game. Anyways, I believe that they are fair in their pricing of the game. I mean, look at Europe. It has a higher cost of living (too high in some cases, and is failing because of it), with higher pay, government benefits, and with that higher taxes and regulations. I've heard that france is planning to have a 75%tax on the rich with the new president they got. It is just differences like that that make games as a whole more expensive in Europe than in America.

59.99$ isn't the same as 49.99 GBP (which is around 80 USD [$])... The prices at retailer in europe for pre-orders are not that high (they're around 37.99 GBP) so there isn't even a reason for them charging that high on their official site when even the physical editions are cheaper!

See this person gets it. People saying VAT is the reason are just wrong. Even with VAT included in the calculation, it does not even get close to £50. This has been shown repeatedly in other threads. Which is why you see new games being sold at £40 when they are $60US, and not £50.... those games have VAT too... duh!

So most smart UK players were just going to order from the US for the cheaper version, what do they do?

Put in region locking restrictions! Now anyone who travels between Europe and the rest of the world for work cannot play the game once they move. Very underhanded and pathetic tactic.

You can white knight ANet all you want, but there is no denying that this is a scumbag marketing tactic to rip off Europe.

In trying to justify their greed they went from bad to worse. As someone who is moving from Europe at the end of the year, I wont be wasting my money until they rescind this stupid region locking mess.

No its not. You are wrong. Stop trying to make excuses.

If it were the norm for games to be $30 more expensive than America, do you think we would be seeing threads like this? No.

Especially for digital distribution. What a joke.

ANet white knights are really getting annoying.

Games like LOTRO and Fallen Earth are free with a very similar item mall so I find the price greedy.

Excuse-pardon me. What? Similar? At what level?

LOTRO requires You to buy quest packs, gives only 1 character slot, and all premium classes are buy only.

Fallen Earth, on free account you have limited crafting to 8h/day, 1 character slot, 75% rate on xp drops faction and ap gains etc, no customer support and cash limit.

How is it exactly "very similar" ?

Ok, they have a little more restrictions but they are free as apposed to £50, also GW2 item shop will expand after launch make no mistake about it, they will be adding things on there that makes them money.

I say game distributers are obsolete and companes can save money by selling digital copies.. Money saved from not buying materials like cds and boxes manuals, not paying the game distributer = cheaper games and the company will most likely make more money in the long run.

Honestly who has bought a CD in the last 5 years?  I buy all my music online, lol mostly because its kinda hard to find the EDM artists I enjoy that actually has a CD with their songs on it..  Even still, if I did buy a CD it would just get coped to my phone then it would sit on a shelf and collect dust.

If you live in Europe you wont be able to play using the USA copy you purchased.

If you dont live in Europe, your post is completely irrelevant.

Good point I suppose if over the last 40 years I paid the same price for European goods in Canada as Europeans pay for them ...if not too bad I'll just have to pay more for the next mmo I play made in Europe

Well, I purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition. In my country, that means I spent more than 100 Dollars on in.

Expensive, sure. But since there is no subscription, and I was impressed with what I saw so far, I thought it was a fair deal. I like to support the games I approve, even if they are more expensive than the others.

It's like cars. A '79 Beetle is a car. A'12 Lamborghini is also a car. But they are completely different animals.

I'm also curious as to why the UK price is so much higher than the US price.  I hadn't realized the difference was more than a few dollars.

As to the posts concerning the region locking. According to the post by Rubi Bayer on the ArenaNet facebook page, "We are aware that a lot of our players travel, and we are looking into a solution for you."

Remember, the game is not released yet.  If this isn't sorted by then I'd be upset too, but we don't even have a release date yet, so relex, you'll have plenty of time to get upset later. :)

Who? Around 50% of total gaming population.

The more, let's call it, dedicated gamers buy online, but people who play games just to play them prefer physical copies. You need to realize that people who frequent internet website about video games are not majority of market.

Then You have younger teens that do not have credit cards, people with crappy internet that doesn't really make downloading todays games a viable option, people with bad ISPs that put bandwidth limits (games nowdays can be anywhere between 10 and 30 GB), add to that that very few digital distributors have option of buying gift cards and there You have it. Still strong market presence of brick & mortar retail chains. Not to mention that having your game on display on shelf is additional exposition.

No clue how much that is in $ nor do I care but I would pay $200.00+ for a good MMO because this genre is littered with failed WoW clones.

Everything you need to know about Elder Scrolls Online

    Playing: GW2
    Waiting on: TESO
    Next Flop: Planetside 2
Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.

Please tell me why the posts explaining that you can get this game from almost any retail outlet for the SAME PRICE AS OTHER GAMES, are going totally ignored?

Your refusal to purchase the game anywhere other than the official site is your own problem.

People are saying they'll wait a month until it's in the bargain bin at Amazon for £30. Note that isn't even from the official site!

You can already buy the game for £34.99 right now from several outlets.

Mountain out of a molehill going on here.

in LOTRO you need to buy at least 1 month of VIP to unlock essencial things like AH post / traits / gold cap / swift travels /  max craft /etc.

VIP cost is 13€ for 1 month.  LOTRO free zone are only the start zones + LL. the rest you need buy or grind and grind TPS to unlock them, without quest packs you can only grind skyrmish to lvl up.

so in the end 55€ (is you dont want research for other places where you can buy much cheap) is still a much better price. games that are F2P will be cost much more than B2P games

and if you want PvP with your elf/man/dwarf you must pay VIP montly otherwise you only can enter pvp with a creep.

for me pay one time and have all unlock is much better than dont pay nothing at first but in the end you will spend much more if you want have acess to all content.

remember price of 55€ is in arenanet site, other places sell more cheap

i will re-look this game before buying after 6 months above from it official launch date.

since VSOH, War, Aion, AOC, FFXVI....(list goes on) till the recent SWTOR taught me to be rational.

  • lilHealalilHeala Member UncommonPosts: 522

I'm too lazy too look up conversion rates for pounds to euros but to compare to other recent games (could compare it to several older games with the same outcome but meh):

I prepurchased Rift digital edition for € 49,99 and then had a monthly sub of about € 10,00, this was in 2010

SW:TOR I bought shortly after launch from a retailer for € 39.98 and then paid € 26.95 for a 60 day timecard (after 2 months having a normal sub from EA).

Currently the SW:TOR digital puchase is still up for € 54.99 on the official site (though retail you can buy much cheaper) which is the exact same price as the standard digital edition prepurchase for GW2, except for SW:TOR you have to start paying a sub after 1 month of play time.

So it's the same price as digital editions of other games, even for SW:TOR that's allready live, except you don't have to pay a sub.

Conclusion: no it's not a too high price, it's the same as other MMO's launched past year(s) except you don't have to pay a sub on top of that so it's actually cheaper if you consider the items in the cash shop fluff like I do.
