im glad they are not showing names cause you can guest to other servers and talk smack to the ppl you are killing or getting killed by. and there is cross server tells i really dont want to get tells saying "you got lucky noob". plus the argument that it will create rivalries is kinda silly since we will only fight ppl for 2 weeks then new ppl after that. i think ranks would be great hell they dont even have to show them to other team but i would like to know my own and give me somthing to work towards. i would only be cool with RA's if they were passives but you could pick from a list of stuff like endurance +10% seige -10% price stuff like that nothing that will let you own a group of ppl solo (like daoc if you were high RR and against low RR team) just small things that would be your own rewards for WvW
I agree with the OP. Those are definitely great additions from DAoC.
Some people in this forum need to pluck the long sticks from their lower orifices and realize that these suggestions aren't meant for epeen waving, they're meant to apply a form of end game progression beyond a gear grind. PvPing for titles is fun. Obtaining new ways to play your character and tweak him/her to be more unique is fun. Knowing your enemies and having rivalries is fun.
In DAoC the death spam was a useful tool to A) Know where the enemy was, and Know who the enemy was. If I saw that Deuce Iswild was wrecking people in Dun Wherever, I knew that a badass Midgard Troll Berzerker was out with his crew, and I got my guys together to go track him down.
I challenge anyone who feels nostalgia for that game to download it and play it. I can't even stomach playing if for more than a few hours. Yeah I get it, it was supposedly the greatest PvP ever created. Well in 2012 it's dated, clunky and not even close to GW2 WvWvW.
Having said that I don't have a problem with 2 or 6. However they aren't a big deal for me and I would rather they spend their time and resources on other things. For instance getting it ready to launch.
I say absolutely not for any point bought ability that is functional. As for cosmetic those exists in GW1 as emotes so I guess they could in GW2.
I think for the most part though that they are focusing on sPvP as the place for bragging. While I do agree with other posters about bragging being for bad sports. I am also realistic that humans, especially male humans, by and large for the most feel a large need for this and it is pretty central to things that "fans" do.
If I go into a wrestling ring or a jiu-jitsu ring and brag or lord it over people I will instant be hated. In pro wrestling its one of the classic aspects of the "heel". But all the fans in the stands will constantly brag and spar about whichever guy they favor. Its human nature.
As for seeing people's name's. I am on the fence. The seeing names thing is kind of obvious but there are interesting aspects to not seeing a name:
1) its more realistic
2) if the people are good you will make up your own names for them. People will say stuff like "If you see the Red Devil don't mess with him he just 1v3 some good players".
3) it adds alot of mystery and uncertainty
4) its somewhat ominous because its unknown. Why SHOULD you know whether that zerg is composed of poor players or good players? Its actually more interesting if you don't know.
A major aspect of warfare is the unknown. Possibly the largest aspect of it. You should hesitate to atttempt to take it out. From GW2's perspective these sorts of things are for sPvP and they probably want to keep WvW closer to a realistic warfare paradigm.
Relic or not, people love how the game made them feel when it was alive and booming. You can't knock someone for wanting to have that pumped feeling again. However these devs played daoc as players once upon a time and know full well what was good and bad about it. I'm sure they'll get it right.

You will have a hard time improving on anything if you simply disqualify things in total or never attmept to extract lessons from bad things.
I really hate the fact they do not show names though and not because I want to crush the little people, but because I love the dread and virtual fear when seeing a name of a guy you know that will prolly kick your ass. I love the trill of winning that fight as well or losing it.
I really do not care for the few people that decide to send me "lol nuub" type of message. That is why you have a blocklist. No point really blacking out the names simply because of that.
Also nothing wrong with keeping score at all and that is not "bad sports". In team sport pretty often award are given to players who contributed the most. Man of the Match award for example or a special pad on the back for someone who scored the most. I would love to have it I would love the competition of it and see if I can raise up in the list. A 2 second decrease though are bad things, that is almost a lifetime in GW2 :P
They already stated in some interview that they had weighter the pros and cons of showing names, and that most likely it's how it'll stay for the foreseeable future.
Basically they want everyone to participate in WvW, even people that usually aren't attracted to PvP, and to minimize any possible source of grief that can result from it. Seeing someone's name opens a very possible scenario where someone could hold a grudge against someone else from WvW, and going to that person's server to insult or trash talk to them (no idea if it happened in DaoC, but I did see it happen in WoW to a friend, someone else kept creating alts to insult her over and over). Now, that posibility would be a plus for some, specially those that come from more hardcore PvP games that thrive on the creation of rivalries, but it's a big turn off for lots of people, and that's what they want to avoid.
I agree with the OP in every point except for Realm Abilities. Grinding PVP to get something isn't fun so meh on that. I do like the idea of rivalries. No reason why we can't have a little chest pounding. We should be able to see names of those we are killing. The only reason not to is to protect the hurt feelings of pathetic noobs. This is a disservice to noobs, they should know they are pathetic and strive to be somewhat less pathetic. If they think they are all great then they will always be noobs. Anyway, it's all in good fun. If you treat pvp death as some sort of terrible thing so awful that we must delete all record of its existance, you may give some of these pathetics noobs some sort of mental complex. Please...think of the noobs.

A lot of the "noob"-calling started already in the lobby room (speaking of Starcraft 1) before starting the game, where they are trying to make teams. The win/losses/disconnects as well as ladder stats were publically displayed if I remember it correctly and people were quick to judge (well you had to type a command to see them, which people did).
The judging also carried over to the "use-map-settings" mode.
When I think back how it was from my perspective in Starcraft 1 and how it is now whenever I decide to play League of Legends: the differences aren't huge. The teenage attitude is/was prevalent in both cases.
They already stated in some interview that they had weighter the pros and cons of showing names, and that most likely it's how it'll stay for the foreseeable future.

However wouldn't that lead to instant ban? I mean: if someone sent you insults in a game where you have to pay to have access to an account, the victim can send screenshot of the insults and get the person banned. Hopefully, that would be enough to make most people avoid harrassing anyone. Should takes less than 5 minutes for the employee to process a such case too.
My main threeway realm vs realm experience comes from RF Online and I never ever heard of anyone getting harrassed by the enemy team. If there was any drama it was been guilds within our own faction lol, because they were competing to be faction leaders.

I am confident that Anet knows how to prioritize a software project.
They are obviously using some sort of Agile methodology (and doing it for real, not just BS'ing it like alot of companies). Without prioritizing your User Stories the whole process goes to shit and your backlog becomes a chaotic mess.
Huge fan of Dark Age of Camelot, have been playing for years, and knowing that a lot of the inspiration for WvWvW in GW2 was drawn from DAOC, I thought that there are a few more things that GW2 could copy that would really put this game over the top for the long run. Please let me know if you agree.
1) Realm Points - there needs to be a way for us to keep track of how much we have contributed to the WvW scene from day 1. It is what seperates the veteran PVPer from the casual or newcomer to the game. For those who don't know what realm points are, basically they are just points (not experience, just points) that you get from killing enemy players, from capturing keeps/towers, etc. Realm Points also help you gain Realm Ranks and Realm Abilities.
There are acheivments, I believe, that will keep track of your WvW kills. So, for personal edification, that works for tracking your kills. Beyond that, I really wouldn't like to see anything like this. WvW is all about your server earning the highest score and earning buffs for the entire server. I really don't want a system that puts personal glory above the cooperative effort.
2) Realm Ranks & Titles - The Ranking system in DAOC was great for many reasons. One was because if you were in a group and you saw an enemy group full of high realm ranks and you knew that your group wasn't on their level, you could avoid them and save yourself some aggravation from getting steamrolled in a fight. Another reason is because Realm Titles are just cool to have.
Maybe on titles, but after your description, not to be visible to the enemy. Part of what is great about WvW PVP is you never know how powerful an opponent is relative to you until you engage them. I wouldn't want anything that could negate that.
3) Realm Abilities (or something to spend realm skill points on) - now before you go nuts hear me out. I know that GW2 WvW auto-levels you to 80, and doesn't want gear or special I-win abilities to outbalance the WvW system. And I agree to all of that. However I was thinking that again as you progress in WvW, you should be rewarded for your efforts. Perhaps set up something where you can get a Realm Ability that decreases re-use timer on your self-heal by 2 seconds. Or maybe you can spend your RA points on something cosmetic to distinguish you from other players. I'm not looking for game-breaking realm abilities like SoS or group purge or anything like that. Just minor tweaks here and there so that someone who has been WvW-ing for 5 years can be distinguishable from someone who is new to the scene.
Hopefully they never do this. No artificial power boosts for people who spend the most time in WvW. You gain levels and gear in WvW. When you reach the level cap, you play experience will translate, hopefully, into more skilled play. Cosmetic items? Maybe.
4) The ability to see enemy names. In DAOC, when you saw an enemey, you saw their race and what realm rank they were. For example, Elf Brehon (race & rank title), and I think that would be perfect for this game. However, if you were to look at your chat box, you would see the actual name of the person you clicked on, like JimmytheElf. To me, this is VERY IMPORTANT in a pvp-centric game because it creates RIVALRIES. In DAOC when you killed certain people you were like OOOH YEAAAHH boy. And when some people killed you, it was sweet to know who it was so you could go get revenge.
Absolutely not. Nameless enemies is a huge feature of WvW and they have already said they will not change it. You can see guild tags, so you can learn to fear particular guilds, if you want.
5) Death Spam - in DAOC whenever someone died it was broadcasted in a seperate chat box for everyone to see. This was great because you could really see if the enemey realm was on a tear, or if your side was winning in a battle, or because if you just poured oil on 10 noobs and killed them all it was cool to see your name spam-killing everyone.
Another big no. Circumvents the anonymity. No purpose to it.
6) Statistics - They didnt' add this into DAOC until later on in the game, but now in the game whenever you get a solo kill, whenever you kill a hib or a mid, etc it keeps track of how many people you have killed, how many towers, keeps, relics etc you have taken, and you can get titles from that as well. Would be nice if GW2 from the day of launch would keep track of what we contribute to WvW by tallying up our kills, keep takes etc. Just another nice little feature to distinguish yourself.
Stats are fine.
I'm sure there are others but these are a few ideas that came to mind. What do you think?

Everything except Realm Abilities.
Because howsoever you turn it, this is just another way of gear grind or grind in general. And it will seperate the players with a lot of time from the general audience. Because there was a gap between casuals and the Gank Squads. Of course, the different between power was not that huge as in WoW with best Gear, but it was huge enough. And you got almost no chance against a RR10 group as lets say a RR3 or even RR5 group, except you were a lot better as said RR10 group.
And i know it very well, was myself a RR10 and rerolled to another server to compete against other famous groups, but it was a long way until we got at least a chance against them, we had to grind up to RR6-7 before we were on a more or less even playing field. And for casuals this experience have to be much more disturbing, becauce the difference in skill and the better teamwork/experience generate a high enough gap between those groups, there is really no need for another bonus for regular pvp players. The reward with shiney items(but on the same level) or titles should be enough.
But all other points would indeed add something to the GW2 system.
Here is a link to the PVP stats we know the game tracks. It may track more than this. We don't know if there are titles or other perks associated with any of the tiers:
While I agree with most of your points, I dont think realm abilities would be a good idea. Even if they are minor, they will end up giving an advantage to players who have them which goes against ArenaNet's whole concept of GW2 PvP. I do think you are right though. The key word here is recognition. Even if you don't have an advantage over other players by progressing, it is important to recognize the players who have shown true dedication in WvW. I think WvW is great without this kind of thing, but it would certainly, like you say, put GW2 over the top.
I played DAOC on mid, Lancelot for most of my time. There was a celt named Mistwraith that was very very good at his class and would always be a force to reckon with when he entered the area. I think it is awesome that I remember this name and even recall battles that I had with him and his groups. It was great to know the Champions of the enemy realms and to feel apprehension when you knew they were in the frontiers. It was also rewarding to be recognized for your feats of courage and heroism by your realm mates when you took down an enemies biggest hitter or a group of enemies.
That is realm pride and personal glory and team pride and a celebration of victory. There is nothing wrong with that. You are way to tender and square if you can't understand someone enjoying a little pride.
It is also part of community building. People would talk to that guy who's name graced the kill spam because he was experienced and fun to group with. those people often became leaders and organizers of the greater community because players knew they were effective.
It's not as if we will be chatting up the enemy with "haha loser, u sux!". It's just for the home community. It's not a big flashy sign that blocks your screen. you don't have to read the kill spam. It is for those who do care about the who's and what's of WvW (RvR).
Aside from that it is also a GREAT source of tactical information.

but that wont work with GW2 because your not fighting the same ppl all the time. would Mistwraith mean anything to you if you saw that name for a span of 2 weeks then didnt see that name again for sevral months my guess is no. our battles rotate every 2 weeks thats why i dont care that names are not displayed. Mistwraith was a chick btw and very annoying and would nerd rage if things didnt go her way.
I just don't see what's wrong with having a checkbox to enable showing your own name, I'm a big boy I can handle some random greifers but fair enough if others want annominity

That's a good idea, I can imagine something like "Red Footpad" "Red Soldier" "Red Captain" etc, instead of the current Red Invader. This would be visible only to the enemy servers, therefore negating any e-peen issues (they still don't know who you are), and would warn the attackers about the "experience" level of the enemy before you engage in combat. I will suggest that on the next beta weekend

Now, that posibility would be a plus for some, specially those that come from more hardcore PvP games that thrive on the creation of rivalries, but it's a big turn off for lots of people, and that's what they want to avoid.
What can men do against such reckless hate?

I will play no more MMORPGs until somethign good comes out!
If you lose your focus and try to do too many things, you will end up with alot of things done poorly.
I would rather they make GW2 the best game it can be rather than add some features from an outdated game.

I don't want titles over my name. That just clutter up the DAoC battles. I think haveing blue and red teams in WvW is enough.
I remember the great battles in DAoC for control of dungeons. That was the best part of the memory for me in DAoC.
I love the way GW2 has created their own version of the DAoC battles. It's allot of fun, if not moreso, than the great DAoC battles of the day.
Time to create new battle memories with GW2!

I think WvW is great without this kind of thing, but it would certainly, like you say, put GW2 over the top.
i was (am) a scout, so yes.....im just kidding, but it felt like that sometime when you get rolled 8v1
When I said i had "time", i meant virtual time, i got no RL "time" for you.
