Good surprise: AOC. "The Tortage chain sucked me in, and I am not a big fan of storyline quests".
Bad surprise: AOC. "By 5 levels after leaving Tortage I was bored silly." I haven't decided if it's the game or what, but I couldn't force myself to keep playing, so I took a break.

TSW this past week. I was suprised at how insidiously brilliant the ability wheel plus deck system is. Thinking while speccing? I haven't did that in years. So many hard choices to make.
Well Trion is about to introduce a 3rd faction and RvR in a content patch along with free faction transfers, so yeah I need to change my boxers after seeing that.
Does that qualify?
holy shit those guys are awesome. Can't wait till their RTS MMO comes out
Ill echo TSW this weekend as the first time I have been surprised in years.
Spending over 2 hrs doing one quest, in what felt like 15 mins, cause I was just having fun and thinking and trying to figure things out on my own.
Asheron's Call, when I was the first person to reportedly stumble across the only Olthoi Noble in game, and not telling a soul for weeks, while I farmed her for loot that I made a fortune off of.
Also AC when I found an absolute perfect item from the tumerok chest that could only be opened with high lockpicking, max AL 263 plate guants 5/7 unparalleled protections Sword 6, Bludge 6, Pierce 6, Acid 6, Imp 6, Light 5. That I sold for a record 250 sings and 250 shards at the time
I took my first really big break from WoW when Wrath of the Lich King came out. When I came back about a year later I started on a different realm, New character and just leveled doing quests and dungeons.
I hadn't bothered reading anything about the game when I was on a break from it, so therefore it came as a big surprise when the Wrath Gate cut scene came onto the screen.
At first I thought something had gone wrong with my computer because the screen when completely blank for a split second, then the whole wrath gate cut scene played out.
I am glad I just played and didn't really read up on anything, that took me by surprise.
But realy surprising for me was when i for first time entered Darkfall Agon gameworld in januari 2009 during BETA, i realy was AMAZED how i got feeling of World feel like Morrowind it was awesome.
I explored for hours and hours one my best exploring times in gameworld Darkfall Agon.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

an extreemly under rated game. You just have to approach it right.
Ironically the best way to enjoy this game is to NOT be competitive.
game world first, clan vs clan warfare second. Small scale pvp, In small scale pvp if you are hunted always assume you will lose. Having initiative is huge and also highly under rated.
Darkfall was surprisingly fun. The feel of adventure and looming threat of being ganked makes for quite a nice little rush.
What I couldn't get past is the bunny hopping and the spamming spells endlessly to try to rank them up.
thats what I call 'the other players problem'. basically the main problem people have with darkfall is what OTHER people are doing. Which for me I couldnt care less what other people are doing.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
The Secret World beta this past weekend. I haven't had that much fun playing a game in at least a decade.
It was actually challenging, especially the Investigative missions which absolutely blew my mind. It has been way too long since an MMO has actually forced me to engage it in an intellectual way. The atmosphere, immersion and skill system also impressed me A LOT.
And what's really funny is, some people's 'reviews' and impressions of TSW are almost the exact opposite of my experience. Never trust other peoples' opinions.
Star Wars surprised me with their story. I watched the videos and it really did look just like WoW. Then I played the game and it wasn't. The difference was the personal (per character) story. It made the difference between a throw away game and something worth playing for awhile.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
The Secret World.....I did not expect something totally new, refreshing, different, and that breaks the WoW clone trend we have suffered thru for 12 years.
TSW since I have complained for a long time that MMOs no longer require you to think to play the game. I was refreshing to have to try and figure out the clues and need to take notes to finish quests. Reminds me of questing in EQ.
SWTOR surprised me on how crappy a $200 million MMO can be
Tried: EQ2 - AC - EU - HZ - TR - MxO - TTO - WURM - SL - VG:SoH - PotBS - PS - AoC - WAR - DDO - SWTOR Played: UO - EQ1 - AO - DAoC - NC - CoH/CoV - SWG - WoW - EVE - AA - LotRO - DFO - STO - FE - MO - RIFT Playing: Skyrim Following: The Repopulation I want a Virtual World, not just a Game. ITS TOO HARD! - Matt Firor (ZeniMax)
For content: I was surprised by Eve after a few months of game play. It took a while for it to "sink in." I always knew there was a lot to do in the game. But, until I was actually doing those things, it never really hit me. I never looked at anything besides mission running for the first couple of months. It wasn't until recently that I started looking at exploration and hauling.
For action and combat: DCUO surprised me and still does. The mechanics of combat and travel are still great to me.
It's not about fighting, it's about balance. It's not about enlightenment, it's about balance. It's not about balance.
Beleive it or not FFXI. After DAOC, I didn t think I would enjoy and get that new MMO feeling again. I have so many memories of both those games, but FFXI suprised me as I m a big pvp player. I was so engrossed in the game, and still think about it almost daily.
On a negative note, I was beyond looking forward to Tera, didn t care for any game outside that one. Good thing there was betas I could try before putting money down on it, biggest downer of an MMO in years.
Last time, I'd have to say GW2 beta, amont other things, entering Divinity's Reach, and actually feeling like it was a living place, people walking around, listening to random conversations on the streets, children running, and no NPC just standing in place unless it made sense (like a vendor in a stall, for example).
Before another game would be Rift, IMHO, joining an instant group doing a zone wide event in one of the early zones in the game.

I will echo TSW as well.
Now it felt more like a single player game than an actual mmorpg. But it is still a ton of fun.

I have to fully agree on this.

GW2 all the way.
and Tera is really bad
