Here is why I was on the fence.
Korean MMO usually = Grindfest
I was never a huge fan of the Asian style graphics
The gameplay for most asian MMO's was very dry bleak and left me bored to tears
Did I really want to waste another 50-60$ to try out a game and just be pissed off again.
Well, to my surprise Tera Online is a fun game. The artwork is beautiful, the combat makes you want to grind. The mobs "around lv 20" become AWESOME to fight and kill. When you kill kumas, Basilisks or naga mercs around 20-26 you already feel like your a badass soloing these mobs and you want more!. BOL Instance was short and sweet and fun to run over and over, the combat is really what SELLS this game for me. If your on the fence about this game this is just a mere small 2 cents from me.
I was the same way I didnt know enough but I promise if you want Action Combat, this is the game for you. I honestly am questioning if I will goto GW2 when it comes out. I most likely will but I think ill be playing 2 games. The combat is just WAY TO MUCH FUN.
I havea 30 berzerker and a 54 warrior and I am loving it! Though I do wish Warriors were easier to tank with "they said they might patch that in"
The only con i have about the game is the dead set class and weps. I was hoping to be a warrior with a sword and shield but I am forced to use dual swords only. No biggie I suppose but just something that erkd me a bit.
If you wanna tank you can play a warrior but its difficult more so than the Lancer.
Lancers = Lance and Sheild only wep the MT of the game currently
Mystics = healing Pet Class using wand type wep.
Sorc = DD uses a Circle "not sure what their called" obviously but they pack a punch and are probably the hardest hitting class.
Rangers= Bow only class they are fun if you like to kite their abilities make kiting unique to me. Godd dmg
Warriors= Dual swords only Steady Dmg decent survivability if you learn how to dodge properly otherwise your in for a long haul.
Preist= Staff only Couldnt tell ya havent played one past lv 5
Slayer= Giant 2 hand sword only Fun class great DPS kinda slow but not to bad
Berzerker= Giant 2 handed Axe "My personal Fav" This class is fun as hell, blocking with a giant axe a dealing major AOE dmg cant get enough of it!
All in all its a decent game I think they did a good job and wiht a bit of tweaking this could be one thatll last.
Thats it just a tid bit from my view of the game I hope it might talk some of you into trying it out it really is a decent game. I thought it was gonna be crap again like most MMO's ive played lately but this was a breathe of fresh air.
GL!

Agreed. now all they have to do is expand on the pvp in the game. Being that it is real action combat is has so much potential for pvp.
Played-Everything
Playing-LoL
Yup I totally agree. Once they get Battlegrounds or something alongthose lines implemented this game has a serious chance of taking off. GW2 will be a great game and since theres no sub fee I think I will stay with Tera Online and GW2 and just play both XD the combat in this game has me hook line and sinker. Its actually challenging.
This is exactly why if I get bored and unsub before battlegrounds come out i'll come back to try battlegrounds when they release them...
I could see myself having loads of fun in battlegrounds as I do in other games where the combat between players is not nearly as interactive.
I am so excited for battlegrounds because all I did was PvP in CBT 1-5 and loved it.
When your 60 and don't want to farm dungeons or anything. Run around lumber town and the areas near the 20 dungeon and you find good enough of flaged lvl 60 pker to fight. I was running BoL on my 60 lancer to get some gear for my alt and got in to fight with quiet a few 60 pker pking low lvl.
There will be D3 very soon. There's no chance that i will buy the game. I never thought of it either. I don't believe in grindfest.
Then what are you doing on a forum for MMORPG's? I can't think of any MMO that isn't a grindfest one way or the other.
Well thanks for your insight. It was very useful to the topic at hand.
I agreed up until the red. I asked myself a long time ago, "why do I have to wait to have fun in an MMO? Shouldn't it be fun out of the box?" Why should I have to get to level 20 before the game becomes fun. That's more what has me on the fence than anything. More-so why I'm looking more at GW2 than anything...fun from the get go. I'm sure Tera is tons of fun at max level but I'm tired of having to grind to get to the end so I can have fun
I played the beta and I just couldn't stay engaged for more than a few hours. The combat was action combat, I'll agree, but it felt very stop-and-go. "Run run run...stop -cast spell- run run run -stop cast next spell- run run run" I was playing an Elin priest and it seemed like every skill I had required that my character be stationary for a set period. Even skills that were meant to get me out of danger (there was a skill that knocked me back a few meters) I had to first stop, cast the spell and then i was knocked back. Hmm I guess what I'm getting at is that it just didnt feel fluid. Now don't mistake this for "the animations aren't fluid, because they were some of the most fluid animations I've seen. Though they were not seamless. If I were running and stopped...the animations weren't 'blended' together to make it look like i had to come to a stop. But the animations themselves were very well done. I enjoyed the graphics though they felt a bit under played. I saw gameplay videos and screenshots from about a year ago and the current model looked a bit under the mark of what we were being shown. Maybe it was just me, but I felt very underwhelmed by the graphics. Granted they were very nice graphics just felt like I got something a bit different than what I was shown. Who knows, maybe they swapped out some lower res textures or something.
Other than that Tera seems like a good game, and I'm sure alot of people will enjoy it. It's just not for me. I'll agree to disagree on all points. I won't go crying from the highest mountain about how awful I think the game is or how no one should ever play it because my opinion dictates, but I will say that it's just not one that I will personally enjoy.
-Cheers
P.S: was I the only one who felt that the combat was very stop-and-go?
MMO's are the ark of the gaming world. Let it take us in new directions.
It depends on what games you compare the combat too.
I like the combat in general except for the animation root.
My thoughts as well. When I'd use a skill I'd be rooted in place for a brief second. Just didn't feel very actiony. Then again in my head I'm comparing the combat to GW2 in which you can cast and do most everything while in full motion. So it may be a bit biased. But it's nice to see I'm not going crazy or anything, atleast.

I liked Tera beta, I am just waiting until the price drops to around $ 20
trolls will be trolls
wall of text crits me for 99999k lol i kid i kid
The game is fun right out of the box but when you fight your first BAM "big ass monster" it really makes your jaw drop. No one game will ever please all aspects for everyone there are things about the game i dislike but my whole point was if your on the fence this is probably a safer bet to spend the money on then not. Like i said I fought with myself and finally broke down. I am glad I did.
If you're used to playing a class that casts on the run then TERA will feel very stop and go. It could be enough to make you dislike the game. When they advertise the action combat and it's just run - stop - cast - run - stop - cast ... then it could fall short compared to some other games.
If you're used to standing still all the time it's probably quite the contrary. YMMV.
oO if he's still on the fence it's safer to spend the money than not? What? lol
If you think he will like it give him the 7 day free trial, every subscriber has one 7 day trial they can give out right? If you want to help the OP out don't push him to buy the game up front, set him up with the 7 day trial first.

I think it is a game you must try before buying it.
Not because it is so bad or anything, I think it is pretty good actually but it is the type of game most people either hate or love.
As I see it is the biggest flaw of the game the lack of player customization. Each class can only use a single weapon for starters, the best thing to add to the game in a expansion is really a secon weapon for all the classes.
The other bad thing is that the story is rather typical Korean and kinda weak, quests are about the same as they were in Meridian 59.
On the good side is playing rather fun, the game looks great (with the exception of some mobs that look stolen from Super Mario) and the game feels well made and stable.
So really, try it out first. If there isn't a free trial yet there will be one soon.
I must admit this game is fun. I got it just to play for a month and at $50 is well worth it. Not sure about longevity but parts are challenging and not in a cheap way like a mob instant gibs someone randomly is more like if I don't block at the right time the mob will insta gib me or if I don't position the mob correctly he may insta gibe someone else in the group. Player and NPC/MoB/BaM combat animations are the best I have seen in an MMO. The only bad thing is there are not many skills, maybe 15 or so total but some are just effects like selft heal or whatever. Been having fun just playing though.
Oh the root in place, that seems to work better for PvP is like recovery frames in fighting games, some skills don't have many at all some have a lot of recovery. Is the only time I can attack when PvPing because I'm a turtle. Also just like fighting games you can often times cancel them to combo into another ability is kind of cool but I don't know much about other classes yet.
Getting to level 20 doesn't take that long and it's the norm for MMOs to use the first 20 levels as a kind of tutorial.
Only MMO I remember really feelnig like I was really playing the real game very early on was Warhammer Online, where you could technically contribute to a SC battle at level 1 with boosted abilities. All the rest kind of don't really start until 20.
I started having fun earlier on. Big fan of the combat.
But yeah, TERA gets (even) better as it goes.
I agree it took me less then 7 hours of playing to hit 20 and i was taking my sweet time looking at the art as i went along and testing out stuff.
