Help me on my way to a Sam/Thf

I heard Sam/Thf is one of the best damage dealing combinations. Can someone tell me what steps I need to take to get there?

Example: "Get Warrior to level 30, then get Theif to level 40 etc....."

Has anyone else played with this combination?

SAM/THF will only pay off when your SAM is level 30 so your THF subjob will have "sneak attack".  SAM/WAR is pretty heavy damage as well.  Basically you'll hit harder on the average subbing WAR but have higher accuracy subbing THF.  Personally, if you're in love with damage, level a RNG.  At level 55 my elvaan RNG was doing as much as 975 to IT mobs.  Plus as RNG you'll never be without a party.

    So Sam/Rng?

RNG/NIN. Some people go RNG/SAM at 60 so the RNG can make use of meditate.  I'm more of a RNG/NIN fan myself or RNG/WAR (hardest melee hits in the game)

I was only suggesting RNG as a main because you mentioned you like doing damage.

I think I'll just sitck with the Sam/Thf

Can you tell me how far I have to level everything?

That's up to you, depending on your resources.  THF is slow and frustrating to level but is a good money maker (see my section on camping NM's =P )  Just keep your subjob leveled at all times, people look down on gimped subs, especially with jobs like SAM that don't get pt's very often.  If you can manage it, level thf all the way to 37 and you'll never have to level it again (smooth sailing for your SAM to 75)  Otherwise level your sub a bit, then level your main, then your sub some more etc etc.  Like I said SAM/THF will only start paying off at level 30 so you can "sneak attack"  You can stack any non elemental weapon skill with "sneak attack"   I believe most SAM's use "Tachi: Enpi" in the early levels.  The DEX boost and SA are pretty much the only reason 95% of melee characters sub THF.  You'll see DRK, DRG, WAR's and so on sub THF a lot for this reason.

Thanks! I think I am just going to level THF straight to 37. If the THF is my main until then, what should I sub it with and what level should it be at?

The BEST way to get a pt with THF is to sub NIN to it.  I bet you can get away with WAR up to 37 though.  MNK may even be decent but WAR is a safe bet.

If I am going to sub WAR with it what level should I get the Warior up to?

Just keep it leveled so you're never gimped.  Your subjob is always half of your main job's level.  If you sub your 20 WAR to your 18 THF it will read 18THF/9WAR.  (just an example) There is no set amount to keep your subjob leveled to for any job or any level.  Just make sure your sub if always the highest it can be when subbed to your main.  If you sub you 5 WAR to your 18THF it will read 18THF/5WAR and people will make fun of you and odds are you won't get a pt.
