Dune would make a GREAT storyline for a MMORPG but it would have to be done right. I'd hate to see the greatness of that series be in a thrown together game.
Funny you should mention this. There was a Dune MMO in development. I'm not sure if westwood was the developer. At any rate the project was cancelled. I tried finding the link, but couldn't.

it would make a nice Mmorpg. Especially in the original Dune, with the desert planet, the spice, the conflict between the houses and the freemen and so on.
But to make it right, it should be made a "Survival Mmorpg" with very specific effects for being in the desert too long, dehydratation, heat waves, worms! and so on.
I really cannot see us going around like in nowadays mmorpg, in middle of the desert, without water nor food and staying alive as much as we want...
Surely a difficult concept for a mmorpg, i think.

Although, I'd be perfectly happy with a Dune-inspired game...the Herbert novels are simply far too complex to lend nicely to a MMOG. That being said, brand-recognition is too powerful to be put aside by Coporate interests. No matter what, I'd love to give it a go.
I would like it only if it was done right. But the whole Dune Universe is so complex I doubt anyone could make a MMORPG that would do the novels justice. Although some aspects would work out really nicely and make a great game. Such as the war between the numerous factions such as House Atriedes, House Harkonnen, House Corrino, the Bene Gesserit, the Ix, the Tleilaxu, the Spacing Guild, the Fremen... Plus I know there could be some really sweet character possibilities such as Face Dancers, Sardaukar Commandos, and Fremen warriors. On top of that theres a ton of different settings they could create through all the planets mentioned (the deserts of Arrakis, the oceans of Caladan, the cities of Giedi Prime, and the hell planet of Salusa Secundus). In replace of magic spells and such characters could use up spice instead if they are able (such as the Fremen or Reverend Mothers). Who knows? Maybe someday down the road we might get a game that does it justice.
I agree with Ominis, would be really complex. But the content is there: planets, classes, vehicles, skills, crafting, PVP, etc.... I would play an Dune online in a heart beat. Forget all those others, if it is done just right it is worth it. HEY DEVELOPERS, you listening!

Would have to agree with you there. As long as the developer spent the time to make a good game on it and not just cash in the name I would switch over in a heartbeat. Even if the gameplay wasn't revolutionary-as long as it was as enjoyable as any of the other MMORPGs right now (although I would hope it would be better)- I would have no problem transferring over; the whole mythology is so much more compelling then the static worlds of the current generation. Heres to hoping that some talented development team picks up on this.
Dune II. Best. Game. Ever. I had to download DOSbox to reinstall it. I still play it to this day. Atreides for the win.
