I like the fact that legendaries may not be the most powerful items

That a rare given all the magic properties and combonations can be even more powerful than a legendary giving a wide range of loot to hunt for with many prefixes

It was sorta like that in diablo 2 but probably not intentional, how a rare amulate or ring could be more powerful than the most powerful  unique ring or ammy.

I agree. Uniques with static (or semi-static) stats should not be the best items, similar to the very early days of Diablo 2, prior to LoD. Back then, the best weapons and many other pieces were rare items. Of course this led to duping those items, but hopefully duping won't be an issue in Diablo 3.

I remember finding a badass rare Gothic Bow or Executioner Sword was an incredible feeling.

I actually think quite the opposite as I like to know that if I get a legendary it is going to be the best and I can actually be excited about getting it. Its nice to have a full set that matches and is intended to go together unlike what will be the case of having a combination of random gear. I don't hate it just prefer if it wasn't the case.

no. It legendary because its powerful and has lore. But a rare can be a legendary with no lore, that no one has seen before, I shall be the one to create its legend.

I remember some of the runeword items being better than any unique in D2 but then some of the runes required to make them were the rarest items in the game to find. I had a lot of really rare uniques in D2 by the time I had stopped playing, but there were some runes I never ever found.

I do also remember some crafted rings and amulets being absolutely uber too, as were some rares. However, didn't they change the rare loot table at some point so that rares were never as good as uniques? I would like to say that was around patch 9...

I too like the idea of rares being possibly better than legendaries or sets. Sets and uniques make everyones' characters look the same and I like feeling good about picking up a really nice piece of rare loot. If you know that rares are not ever going to be as good as uniques, at some point in the game, they just get discarded and what is the point of making 90% of the gear worthless in a loot-centric game?

Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.

Obvious troll is obvious. Read the post properly and you may understand my point of view. Otherwise try to argue your point in such a way as to not come across as a full downy.
