Even the worst most pessimist outcasts put SWTOR as having more subs than SWG did on its prime, so I'd say... no chance at all.
Like I said before, SWG hovered around 300k subs for over a year (2004-2005) and I will bet good money that SW:TOR will go below 300k subs by the end of the year, unless they go F2P.
That is the difference between real MMORPGs of the past and these cut and paste casual ThemePark garbage. The former evolved over time and slowly raised in subs where as the latter depend on a high initial sales, to make a quick buck, and then decline over the first year to then either go in maintenance mode or F2P. But by then they have moved on to develpp the next MMO and the money-wagon continues. Cryptic is a perfect example of a company that create copy paste garbage and add cash shop to get some quick buck and then go F2P.
If SWTOR goes F2P, then there is a chance that SWG does get resurrected, as if what has been said is to be believed, SWG got shut down because SOE were going F2P, and that LA said "no"
I reckon SWG would do rather well as F2P, and if Minecraft can sell well, then so could SWG as F2P. I doubt Minecraft would do as well as it does with a monthly fee.
After the security breach last year, the populations grew, giving the game 4 FULL servers, whereas before that and the free transfers there was only 1 FULL server. So, if they remarket SWG as F2P, I reckon it will do as good as Minecraft. There is a tonne of things in there to attract a wide range of players, but what kept people away was the bad reviews and then there was the monthly fee. If there is no fee, more people will try it and the true enjoyment will emerge wiping away the cloud of bad reviews which prevented people in bothering with it, and then more people will play.
That would be amazing. I thought about writing LA to beg, but I can't find a legit e-mail address to write them. If a petition was started that stated the reasons why we want it instead of SWTOR, they might listen...slim chance, but...

Ever seen an MMO being reinstated after being shut down?
There is your answer.
I would love to see Tabula Rasa being brought back online. Ain't ever gonna happen!
APB?
Yep, and it all depends on circumstances.
APB had a very short life, and needed to get back up quickly as not to rip off people who bought the game.
Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, Matrix, EOQA closed due to being dead
SWG closed due to business reasons between EA/Bioware, LA and SOE. People have said that LA did not want SWG to go F2P but SOE did, also there were rumours that EA had a contract saying that SWG and SWTOR could not co-exist, and that SWG closing days before SWTOR officially launched strengthens that. Also servers were rising in populations at the time of the closure announcement, giving 4 FULL servers and game was far from dead, especially as it had more population than Vanguard (with only 2 servers) both dead, and DCUO with only 4 servers and at the time as it was still P2P, they were all dead. SOE and/or LA gave SWG 6 months notice which other MMOs have not had, it is usually 1-2 months they give.
SWGs shut down was far from normal behaviour. SWG may stay dead because the process seems to be rather convoluted and it had 8 years activity, but the game is already written so no need for another dev team to write a new one which could go the same way SWTOR did, and if SWG was profitable still (especially if SWG was more profitable at June 2011 than SWTOR is or becomes to be) and whatever restrictions may have been around last year and are no longer an issue today which made it shut down in the first place, then SWGs resurrection is quite possible.
@OP: So, because you didn't like SW TOR it is a horrible game? The amount of self-righteousness displayes on these boards is just of the scale.
He is not the only one. It is horrible because so many people have left the game and EA/Bioware have admitted that SWTOR is not so much of a high priority because of that.
There is a slight problem even at its peak, SWG never had the amount of players that SWTOR is having right now. More then a million people still have a SWTOR subscription. That is a lot and more then other western MMO's have managed except for WoW.
It might not be perfect but it is doing a hella of a lot better then SWG ever did and the industry is paying attention.
Like it or not (I loved the original SWG, pre doc bug, anyone who whines about the NGE basically only knew easy mode SWG) SWG failed and failed hard. It had a lot of intrestig ideas but the tech is outdated, the ideas are outdated and a modern MMO needs to bring something more.
Not that SWTOR is that modern MMO. Sony took Meridian 59 and made it into a spreadsheet. Blizzard took Everquest and refined it into game. Turbine took WoW and turned it into a PvE haven and Bioware/EA took all that and refined it until all taste was gone and gave us SWTOR the watery MMO.
However they managed it, SWTOR managed to remove most of the stat grinding of early games and yet feels as dry as a spreadsheet game. None of it has soul, no pazzaz. The stories told in it are of the action movie variaty yet drag on as if it was a costume drama. What story line moved your sole? Punch your gut out? Jerked a tear? Made you laugh out loud?
If SWTOR was a movie, a book, it would real like a travelogue not a piece of fiction to stir your soul.
Meanwhile the fighting is never intresting, you either win with ease and all that matters is how long it takes to win, or you are out healthed by enemies that just grind your health down faster then you can yours.
The intro movies show leaping and flying and you just stand there and have round after round of ammo emptied into you while waving a flashing stick in the air until one of you keels over. Some battles later on have groups of 6-7 normal mobs that are somehwat intresting and show what could have been but usually the games idea of challenging is two signature (white) mobs and that is it. Beginning to end. Same tactics, some enemies, no need for skill or strategy.
Crafting is boring as hell and extremely random. Grind 20 green items, ding all search on first item. With great difficulty gather resources for 1 item, it never ever breaks down into a recipe, not if you grind a 100. FUCK THAT! It is 2012, SOMETHING better could surely have been thought up.
Travel sucks, housing is non existent, pets are boring... SWTOR is the MMO without a heart. I played flash games I felt more attached to.
Tomorrow there is a near open beta for The Secret World, Tera has launched and Guild Wars 2 is around the corner.
Maybe they will be better, maybe one ofthem will do something new or capture the spirit of MMO's of yesterday.
BUT SWG is gone forever. To hard, to few people who actually played the game before easy mode was added to shut up the whiners who wanted heavy armor with enough regen to solo a nest of Rancors.
SWTOR does suck, my 6 month affair with it is done. SWG wasn't all that awesome though, the gameplay systems were pretty good, but the setting was all wrong and made it horrible.
There is a slight problem even at its peak, SWG never had the amount of players that SWTOR is having right now. More then a million people still have a SWTOR subscription. That is a lot and more then other western MMO's have managed except for WoW.

There is not more than a million people still playing it. People may still be subbed as chose 3 or 6 months and just waiting for the sub to expire, but the servers are empty. EA/Bioware would not be dropping it in priorities if it really had more than a million.
SWG took about 6 years before giving free transfers off low populated servers. SWTOR is getting it 6 or 7 months, and SWG took lower priority after the NGE in 2006/2007.
SWG had way more stuff in it han SWTOR. I'll take SWGs old systems over SWTOR up to date systems any day. Take away player housing and cities, Chronicles system, Beast Master, Open Worlds, Crafting, Space etc and you get SWTOR. If SWG did not have these things, SWTOR would be no doubt the better game, and even I would have struggled to clock 500 hours in it.
Every MMO has something that SWG had, but SWG had it all. It will never come back as P2P, but if it is brought back as F2P it would do a lot better, as there so many systems in it that will attrract a wide range of people.
Having up to date tech games does not make a game succesful, as if that was the case people would not play Minecraft, with its blocky graphics, that a ZX Spectrum could probably achieve! But it still sells a million copies instantly on Xbox 360. What kept SWG down was the NGE and the bad press coupled with a monthly fee. Why bother paying to play a bad game. If it goes F2P people will see what all the fuss is about, and then find the true gem it really is. SWG is like a mix of Minecraft, WOW and EVE
another SGW no...another starwars game..you bet yur sweet ass ..as long as LArts is still breathing...they will keep pumping the life outta the starwar franchise untill their last breath just to score a quick buck..

that says it all for SWTOR...It was just a quick buck
Anything Star Wars related has been bad after Empire Strikes Back, actually thinking about it it would of been better ending right there with evil triumphing over so called 'good'.At least this way I would of been spared Ewoks and JaJa Binks bad acting /plots/blatent gimmicks with SW logo on them.Basically for the last 32 years anything with SW associated with it has either been shit or very soon turned to shit.
Originally posted by Ecnali I'm sorta hoping that SOE and Lucas.Arts could come to some sort of reconciliation and bring back SWG. I was so terribly disappointed with SWTOR. And I really miss the only MMO that had such a wonderful crafting system, housing system, and the way buffs were handled. and I know most of you lot are going to loathe this, but I loved SWG after the NGE and all the other modifications they were doing before they closed the curtain on it.
Hell no...not unless Raph Koster has NOTHING to do with it.
SWG could have been one of if not THE best MMORPG ever made if he wasnt such a lazy
Yeah, it was his choice to use randomly generated ground on the planets, no 3D x/y axis so no jumping and a speeder that is supposed to be several feet off the ground would stop on a pebble and you could shoot through the ground and walls. Random generated quest locations that would have it spawning in doorways so people couldnt get into their homes without a server reset or some other location you couldnt get to...so much lazy programming that made the game feel cheap when it could have been avoided.

Because apparently that goofy looking thing in the trash compactor, the jawas, greedo that stupid hammerhead thing in the cantina all from the original was super duper fantastic.

Right, the owner shot his dog and burried him, and now you expect him to dig him up again AND make him bark again?
Seriously?
SWG had it's run, doesn't matter if you think it's better than SWTOR or not, that is the horse that LucasArts has put their bet on.
It's not always the Firefly miracle story... and to be honest we all know that that was really nothing more than putting the dot after "The End"

The irony in all of this is the fact SWG was VASTLY more advanced than SWTOR. Similarly, pre-CU was vastly more advanced than the NGE?!

As bad as the opinions are of SWToR on these forums, the public opinion of SWG was much, much worse.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

First off swg will never return, that is to soe. SOE lost the license. It would take a new company, to make a new star wars mmo.
One thing I can say is swtor = neg v2.0 plain and simple.
However swg comming back not happening there is 0 chance of lucas arts talking to soe at this point.
that says it all for SWTOR...It was just a quick buck
While I did enjoy SWG (had five active accounts) pre NGE, some people really, really need to learn how to let go.
SWG had its time, it is gone, leave it alone.
A creative person is motivated by the desire to achieve, not the desire to beat others.
Yeah, good point. LA is nothing if not a cheap whore.

No, the only thing you can hope for is SWG2.
