Should we purposely fail some DEs?

    ^^Exactly this^^

I wondered about that as well, but the BWE cured me of that worry.  I failed probably at least a third of the DE's I was involved in, even at fairly low levels.  I won some and lost some both solo and with small and large groups.  It always felt there was a real danger in failing any of the events and having it be a real struggle to even get the situation back to where you started (as in you fail the event you started in and maybe even the following event until you were able to turn the tables and get it back to where it was when you first joined that particular chain).

So, I don't think there are many issues there.  Besides, you may nail it the first time and breeze through it only to come back at some point and get a serious ass beating!

Hence the MMO conundrum, especially one which you're not trying to cater to the 1% known as LEETDOODZ. There's nothing universal that says this is too easy, this is too hard, or what's just right. DE's are essentially the main public content in GW2, meaning they will be tuned to population, more so than they are actual difficulty. Failing once in a while is what a majority is going to expect, failing a lot isn't. Don't misread as I understand the point you're making, if we never see the consequence it's a pointless thing indeed.

It's going to be an interesting thing to see in terms of how A-net balances it after launch. Personally I'm far more interested in seeing the chains of events than I am actually defeating one of them, heh.

It wouldn't bother me if enemy NPC's could take points right up to the starter areas of each zone -there would be so much to do and the world change after driving back so many different NPC's would be all the more obvious with a great sense of player pride for the players involved with such a dramatic change.
