Since when was it up to the game to define your role? It's up to you to define your character background and role. Games like UO or Skyrim don't even have classes, yet they are better RPGs than most MMORPGs.
A hint: being a "tank", a "healer" or a "DPS" is not (and never was) "Roleplaying".
No loot pregression (I just killed that big boss and got his powerful sword, oh wait, it's the same as one from a sheep?)
Do you really know what a RPG is? Did you even read my previous post? What has this to do with playing a role, aka role playing game?
Downgrading of levels, pointlessness of experience (I have explored the depths of the world, killed dragons, acquired countless XP and power, lets return to my home land and help where I previously was to weak to help out, die bandit.... oh hell, this guy is strong =/)
Seems to me that you have no clue about what Roleplaying game means. You know that a 12 year old kid with a knife can still kill a veteran third dan black belt kung fu master, right? His third dan black belt doesn't make him immune from being backstabbed... if anything, the way GW2 does it is more realistic and therefore encourages Roleplaying more than the batch of WoW clones where you become an immortal god when you have 5 more levels than the content.
I know A-net has produced GW2 like this because they want to innovate, but these changes turn away RPG fans like myself, and presumably the orginal quoted poster.
You are not a RPG fan. You are a grind fan. Nothing wrong with that, and I can understand why people like you wouldn't like GW2, but you are very confused about what a RPG really is. This said, there are plenty of games out there which will satisfy people like you, where gameplay is on rails with fixed progression and the eternal gear carrot. I'm not worried about you finding a game more appropriate to your "conception" of "RPG"... =P

1) B2P because it will allways end up costing more than subs just as F2P does and all the future expansions/updates will be geared towards draining money from your wallet and not makeing the game better.
2) No rpg elements to this game if i wanted to play a FPS i would buy a FPS
and that is all i have and its all i need to say no to buying this game
This post is so absurd that it defies a rational response. The only one that I can muster that seems suitable would only get me banned so I'll just leave it at this:
I don't see how it really warrants a response,"rational" or not... The first point can be contested, but the second one can't. There are very few RPG elements to GW2(in other threads, GW2 Fans have even compared it to Counterstrike). That is fact. Due to these aspects, he doesn't like the game or think it's for him, that's his opinion. You call having a differing opinion absurd?
Have another try at being funny, Mr Smartypants.
I was writing my own RPG content before you were born, son, so I know a little about them.

RPGs used to be about story, lore, characters, and getting lost in a made-up universe. I guess the new generation of gamers has either forgotten, or never bothered to realize that. I guess I should go put zelda in the counterstrike pile.

As sad as it is to say, many players today have been "taught" that this is what an MMORPG is. It's all about the loot.
I only have one concern with the game to be honest:
1. The lack of progression. This has me concerned personally because I found out that I like to feel like my charcter is progressing in power; and I believe I'm not alone. That's part of the allure of RPGs in general for me. And in GW2, there is no endgame progression, thus it has me worried that I'll get bored with it after a while just like I get bored with FPS after a while. Just like in FPS, even if PvP is perfectly balanced with everyone having the same "stats" and even if the gameplay is good, it just doesn't hold my interest after a few months if there is no progression.
Nicely put! This is actually my one reservation about the game. I haven't played it, so I don't know for sure, but it is something that was worring me. To be honest, I will most likely buy it and try it out, just cause I like to try the games to be completely sure.
About time they weeded out the xbox crowd who needs an achievement for logging in. How needing to have progession (you progress to 80 than cap, so what?) which somehow equates to fun is beyond me. Picking up a +100 Kick-ass Bow of Defense did it for me in Diablo 1, but since then..nah.
Not really sure you can compare FPS with MMOs at all. I guess people like shinies though, hence why Diablo III has sold so much. Seen that game, buddy showed it to me. Not quite impressed to say the least. They really should not call it an MMO or even an RPG for the most part. I mean..it's not.

If you want gear grind go play WoW and if you can't bring yourself to play WOW ask your why. Guild wars 2 is an RPG that stripes away all the features designed purely to generate more income as a result of feeding addictive personalities and the people desire for loot.
If you really cant be w/o gear grind aka "progression in an MMORPG", then play your favorite gear grind game and play guild wars 2 with it. But guild wars 2 was designed so you can have fun playing. It wasn't desire to trick you into playing by making you chase a carrot you will never catch. its not designed to force you into playing it.
Or as someone above me said it better, if you need gear progression but dont want a monthly fee involve go play D3, I am sure it will work well for the gear grind players.

It's amusing that you say "You call having a differing opinion absurd?" when in the previous line, you say "that is fact" for something that is only your opinion... ;-)
Sorry to burst your bubble here, but RPG does mean Roleplaying Game. It does NOT mean "EQ/WoW clone", or even "Dungeon and Dragons clone". It does NOT mean class/level based game with a gear grind. I does NOT mean "rigid gear/stat based combat" either.
And GW2's immersive detailed world definitely contains a lot of elements favoring roleplaying. Features like dyes and cosmetic clothing are already build into the game. It's just as much a "RPG" as any other MMO on the market, and definitely more than some which are only based on wielding the latest purple gear near a mailbox to impress "noobs".
So don't confuse fact with opinion. That would be a good start before you lecture others about respecting opinions.
Oh come on.... the lack of RPG elements has been stated even by fans of GW2..
If you can't see that, then maybe you are blinded by your love for the game.
Lets disregard fluff like dyes.
Here are three of the most important RPG elements that are missing, in descending order.
No defined roles for people to play
No loot pregression (I just killed that big boss and got his powerful sword, oh wait, it's the same as one from a sheep?)
Downgrading of levels, pointlessness of experience (I have explored the depths of the world, killed dragons, acquired countless XP and power, lets return to my home land and help where I previously was to weak to help out, die bandit.... oh hell, this guy is strong =/)
There are more, just less important.
I know A-net has produced GW2 like this because they want to innovate, but these changes turn away RPG fans like myself, and presumably the orginal quoted poster.
No it hasn't.
Many pen and paper RPGs do not have defined roles.
There is loot progression.
Level scaling is not antithetical to RPG.
Man I am just amazed at how much misinformation is out there on this game. I am glad people try to correct it but its so out of hand its like pissing in the ocean. It might feel good but it doesn't do much.
This is the worst I have ever seen for a game as far as not just wrong but blatantly backwards. Lacking in RPG elements where do people get this stuff.
Fortunately Anet is smart enough not to make any real extravagent claims and stay above the fray. If there were running the "We have the best combat Evar!" add campaign that TERA is it would be a complete zombie-fest in here.
3. My fear that Arenanet will listen to the no-life raiders.
Technically the large boss DE's sort of are raids.
But they won't satisfy raiders cuz it don't make them leet enough. Its kind of funny how it just proves all the stuff they deny is really true. Riiiiiiight its about being social, no its ok I believe you.
