Currently on the line about Resubing to RIFT with all the new things they have added, but at the same time I've never played WoW before and I was thinking about buying the game (now that all of the Expansions are $60) and playing it for the first time.
What do you guys think?
Comments
WoW is a far superior game and is much more enjoyable while leveling. The quests are much better, and the world, although cartoonish, is much more lively and engaging.
Go with WoW.
I would say Rift, but not until the next expansion with 3 faction PvP comes into play.
** edit **
I think WoW's world is better realized and they do have a more coherent story in the world. Even so, I found Rift easier to play for the 3 months I played it than the 1 month I managed to play in WoW, when I resubbed for the Cata expac.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
LMAO
Your kidding right?
RIft blows away Wow in every way. Its no contest. I just resubbed to RIFT and the devs have been hard at work. The game is AMAZING now. You have to check it out.
Many people are coming back due to Conquest, and the server im on, Wolfsbane is very very active. I cant believe how much has gone on since I left.
Wow? Give me a break. Its nothing more then a cartoon with 12 year olds playing these days. People are leaving it in droves, everyone is sick to death of it.
Rift has a more mature player base as well. You dont hear the LRNHOWTOPLAYNOOBSLOLROFLCOPTER hurp durp crap as well.
Rift or WoW?
Puhlease...>RIFT all the way........
If you are set on one of them I'd say Rift.
I think after playing Rift, with its great graphics, then trying WoW for the first time you may be dissapointed graphically speaking. They arent even close. Personally I enjoyed leveling thru Rift alot better than WoW. I cant speak for Cata though, I stopped playing after Wrath
I've actully have a level 20 Rogue on WoW starter account and I enjoy him, and on RIFT I have one level 50.
lol opinions.
RIFT has a crapton of options in terms of character growth and classes unlike WoW which is so...soey.
HOWEVER! If you haven't played WoW yet, I honestly thing you should do it. Its a massive f*cking game and it deserves a try. It's alot easier to level in the game, everything is polished as hell (RIFT is too).
Play WoW just to experience it, then go back to RIFT and then dump all your MMOey effort into it. Enjoy.
If you're an MMO player and you havn't played the most successful mmo then you definately should. If anything it will be a learning experience.
I'll put money on people telling you otherwise only because they have put something like, at the 'very' least, 1000 hours into it and are burned out on it. Almost all of them will have at one point really enjoyed WoW.
First time anyone plays WoW it's usually a good experience for a decent length of time. It isn't my game of choice by a long shot but the few months I did play it I definatly enjoyed it.
Leveling from 1 to about 30 or so is OK in Cata. After that, it's the same, old WoW. Level 80 to 85 was horrible. I really couldn't stand it. I'm not entirely sure what was wrong, but I just couldn't play my level 80 characters in the new zones, even though I'd just spent almost a month playing a character from 1 to 35 or so.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Heres another thought: you've got a guy sitting at lvl cap in RIFT. If you feel a little bored with the situation, you could play WoW as a break and come back to RIFT after the devs put in more content (which is always polished and great) and then you have more exploration to do so your favorite MMO doesnt get stale.
Alright im quitting amphetamines
Rift is a poor man's WoW. How anyone can argue this is beyond me. I've played both games, and WoW is FAR SUPERIOR. The only thing Rift has over WoW is graphics and the soul system, which, ironically, lends the game to be far less balanced than WoW in PvP. And the questing in WoW is so much better than Rift it isn't even funny. Since they redid the old world quests for Cata, it was a lot more enjoyable. Leveling in Rift is a chore.
WoW has:
More content in both PvE and PvP
A larger population of people to play with
Better questing
Multiple leveling options due to zone overlap
FAR, FAR superior combat
Better Lore
Better endgame
Better armor models
Better gear itemization/customization
A massive world compared to the claustrophic Rift world
Seriously, Rift is better in every way, huh? LMAO.
Seriously
You can try the first 20 lvls, that would give you a glimpse of how questing/leveling works. While I agree leveling is better in WoW, Rift is adding 3 faction OWPVP... and thats a huge win right there.
IMHO Rift has better dungeons/raids, and if you liked Rifts dynamics events, well, you won't find any of those in WoW.
Best option is: try the first 20 levels (different classes, builds, battlegrounds, etc), compare it to Rift, see how the 3 faction OWPVP developes, make your choice
neither.. or just resub to rift, we all know you will quit wow after 1-2 months, you willquit rift again in 1-2 months, and we will all quit countless new mmorpgs in 1-2 months, so just take cheaper option
wow is good game, i can make quite silly comparison, everyone love candy , and i imagine everyone above age of stupidy loves fruits
wow is like candy, delicious chocoloate , but you are smart guy, looking after yoursel, so you cant eat all you want
rift is like fruits, god i love fruits, and i can eat way more and still be healty
rift have far more content, is almost as polished as wow, and doesnt have as good lore/story as wow, both are tasty and good in their own way, one just offers more, rift is basked of fruits, wow is one expensive chocoloate
i played both, played wow far too long, and rift was first mmo/game to give me that awe factor we used to have when we started playing games for the first time, in a long time, if you go to wow now you will take month or two to get into raiting if you are into that, and you will miss a lot of old unused content now. thus limiting lore/story only strong points in wow atm tbh
i love blizzard but i will never support theirs new, one patch in 6 months policy , i still remember having major content patches in vanilla wow every 3-4 months..
I guess that depends on how well you like Rift. And, as others have said, try WoW up to lvl 20 for free. It won't give you any ideas about endgame and such, but it will give you a taste of how the different classes are, and you'll be able to try a couple of instance too, if that something you like.
Personally, I'll never go back to Rift. For me, it was a shallow copy of WoW, with better graphics.
Having played both - I suggest WoW, so many of the replies above that place Rift 1st - hinder on the fact that many ppl have played WoW to death IMO. In regards to superior gameplay mechanics etc etc its all opinion based - one isn't factualy better than the other....
If you've never player WoW before you owe it to yourself to play it. Hey play both - but play WoW first so you can understand the progression Rift makes after WoW.
I recomend a night elf :-)
Played WoW for years, was fun for a long time. Played Rift for about a week, thankfully it was just a trial version. I've also played Guild Wars and Warhammer Online. Rift is nothing more then a combination of the 3. Public quests like Warhammer, multiple class combinations just like Guild Wars. Questing was a lot like Wow, but going from town to town was just like Warhammer. Graphics in Rift were terrible, I couldn't stand them. WoW's are a bit too cartoony as well though. Combat is far better in WoW. Haven't played WoW for a few years now, but I think I'd rather go back to it then to ever see Rift on my computer again.
In a world of sharp knives, you would be a spoon.
and one hour a day be sure to get nude and dance near the mailbox/AH to receive the money buff. that gives you money.
one thing to try (this goes for everyone) if you wanted to experience vanilla content or WoW without having to....make a transaction with a company, there are numerous places to do such things AND at a quicker rate...of um. experiencing the content.
then again there's a certain excitement i get (imo) from playing an mmo the legit way so either will work.
WoW?
Perhaps five years ago kiddo. Now, its beyond lame. Its like playing a cartoon game with 12 year olds.
Enjoy playing with emo teens? Play WOW. Enjoy listening to kids talking to each other in chat? Play WoW....
WoW at this point is nothing more then a game for children............Like big fuzzy panda bears and cute little bitty gnomes? Like cartoons?
Play WOW.............
Rift graphics, gameplay, players, updates, are all superior.........pvp and pve? RIFT.......hands down.......
simple as that..........
This was why I played WoW, a friend said the same thing as you just did.
Vanilla WoW (the first 60 levels) was genuinely fun and I enjoyed the journey to 60. Then I made the absolute mistake of paying for the first expansion. I made it to 67 or something before I quit and you could not pay me to go back.
There was a more explicit feeling of being on a gear treadmill, I was playing a game designed to get me addicted to repetitive play. Play that is rewarded in a gambling style chance of a good drop. The atmosphere while grouping was abysmal. Do WoW players realise how close they are to those zombies that sit in front of gambling machines, carefully trained by piecemeal rewards to hand over their money? Nothing else matters to them except loot. Challenge? Pffff. They will happily follow an OP character so they can get to a loot chest. Socialising? Only when loot becomes an issue.
Ok, you can argue all MMOs work the same. Maybe. I think WoW, or more truthfully its players, have taken it to an extreme.
I would stay the hell away from it.
I went through this phase at one point as well , Played rift for nearly 4 months started getting bored so I decided to unsub and take a break
couple days later I stumbled across a wow box set that included the core game + expansions.. thought what the hell i'll give it a try , Bought it took it home and installed it , Played it for a few hours before uninstalling and resubbing to rift .
I only played wow for a few hours so i'm not going to pretent to be an expert on the gameplay but the graphics are just a joke , almost none of the classes even seemed remotely appealing and the world well it was big i'll give it that , Runescape is free and has about the same graphics as wow.
Rift has its downsides but I had tons of fun leveling 2 characters to endgame which at any time i can change roles without having to level an entire new character , this was a big thing for me as I like playing different roles in groups from time to time , I can level a rogue and play as an archer for a few days , Respec to an assassin and have fun roaming around stealthed or repec to a tank when needed or even a support healer .. Its nice having options and only having to level 1 time to do all that.
Rift has fun pvp
Rift has a large open world to explore
Rift has far better graphics and armor skins than wow
Rift has Variety through the soul system
IMO Its a far superior game to wow in terms of fun.
Both games have a trial try them both everyone has different taste when it comes to gameplay.
The flipside is, after playng Rift he may be amazed with how much better the presentation is in WoW how much more character the game has than Rift.
Ok, let's assume Rebel is a typical WoW player (the poster you quoted twice). Let's further assume you're the typical Rift player.
Now, which game seems to have the "emo teens" you're talking about?
The answer is very clear, at least to me.
lol go look at rifts server pop and see how much better Rift is to WOW. Ares I want what you're smoking seriously. Rift is doing anything it can do to survive as you can see with the slap dash 3 realm pvp system they are all of a sudden designing yet swear they have been doing it for a long time. The funny thing is its a rehashed map in stillmoor ironic isnt it? If you havent played wow try the free trial through level 20 and then upgrade if you like it. I do not play wow and probably never will again but saying Rift is far superior in ANY regard to just about any game on the market is ridiculous at best considering all they do is steal other games content and try to make it sound so orginal.
