I have played a WD about half way into ACT III Hell mode. It's been challenging trying to gear up just to survive at my current area. It seems I get 2 or 3 champion mobs every area I go into and it's darn right nasty how much gold I'm going through just to repair my gear. I did manage a few tricks I thought I will share in case anyone else needs them.
1) If you wish to progress into the Act and don't mind skipping some of the champion mobs you can aggro them and drag them into an area of the map which you have already cleared. Once you get the mob there use your teleport and exit out then go back into the area normally without using your teleport and you can avoid that champion.
2) Don't waste your money on the Blacksmith. The Blacksmith's crafting items cost to much to money to create given the randomness of the finished product. Using the AH is a much better use for your coins than to "hope" you get a good roll on the Blacksmith creation table.
3) The Jewler is good to train up since he will allow you to create higher tier gems. I socket and unsocket gems all the time when I find new gear so he comes in very handy. One good thing is that you can socket the highest crafted gem into a newbie socketed item and it will help out your new toons drastically.
Problems I have with D3:
1) The Blacksmith no longer "discovers" new recipes when you break items down.
2) I have yet to see a recipe drop for my Blacksmith after playing well into Hell mode. With one exception: I did find a white item on one of the vendors one time. It was a worthless item at that.
3) The Blacksmith's items that he can craft are too expensive to even bother with since there is an in game AH. Use your money in the AH NOT on the Blacksmith in the hopes to get something nice.
4) Classes don't seem very balanced for survivability: Monks are survivors and have plenty of heals to help keep them up and going. Sorcerors are to squishy (at least mine is so far) and die quite often. If Witch Doctors get aggro then it's the "run in circles game" until your pets manage to get the mob to a decent size. I have not played the Demon Hunter or the Barbarian as yet so I have no comment on those two.
5) The Templar as a compaion could not grab aggro if it bitt him in the butt. Those aggro gaining skills of his is next to worthless and they need to be tweeked up a bit.
6) Have not played much with the Scoundrel or the Sorceress as yet so no comment there.
Overall:
I like D3 but it really needs a bit more tweeking on the game for it to shine for me. I don't mind the gear grind since I knew it was going to be like this from the start. I like pretty much everything else in the game but I think they could have made a few more Act's since it's been in development for such a long period of time.
I plan on playing D3 until GW2 comes out so...

You make a strong case for your dislikes. I definitely agree with some of it.
I'll just do the point by point rebuttal/confirmation. Haha
1)absolutely. Overall the blacksmith is underwhelming. Although I'm told there are legendaries and super good rare recipes in inferno I haven't seen any.
2)yep. Super rare for underwhelming gear that costs 50k to make. Bleh.
3) absolutely. However, I did craft a chest piece for 50k and then price to sell it for 500k on the ah yesterday! This is probably the exception not the rule. I got really lucky with the stats.
4) I have to take issue with this one. I main a monk. They are super survivable early on, but in inferno they really aren't. The only reason monks might seem more survivable at high levels is because we gear for it big time. A lot of monks are running tank builds. If you went straight dps like a wizard you would get owned in mel
