Whats your dream MMO combat system?

UnkillableUnkillable Member UncommonPosts: 123

the question i want to propose to the Pub here at mmorpg.com is simple:

Whats your dream MMO combat system?

-skillsets

-abilties

-movement

-overall feel

-reactiveness

What have you loved in past games? What have you hated in past games? Why was it good/crappy? The more indepth the better, id say go all out if you wanted to, describing eveything you like/dont.

i threw a poll on to this just to see more of what people would pick over what. thanks for your time guys!

I really want a smooth FPS MMO.

When I think of SWTOR and what could of been if they instead used a BattleFront style of gameplay for the Jedi and ranged classes, I cry.

OP, honestly i dont like your poll. Developers have the ability to add the 3 answers in the poll into 1 combat system. So dont ask for one choice in this poll. I vote for all three together. As soon as you ask for splitting options that can work well together, developers contiue to make beautiful yet crappy games with missing features.

a lot of people really love twitch gameplay... as do i.

but how do mmo server limitations restrict this from happening? i dont know the answer. good interenet connection = win most of the time? what about people with shit connections?

Skyrim combat - with aiming  (simular to tera, but more fluid and dynamic like skryim). i love the First Person Shooter type combat with the spell bolts and the arrows. That would be great

with a PC interface (oposed to the xbox interface)

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

I prefer mmo combat to have hard counters. I dont want every class to be balanced and equal to every other class. Making every class viable 1v1 against each other is counter intuitive to the mmo mindset.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

If you have that sort of combat you don't have an mmorpg, you have an mmofps, which I wouldn't be interested in playing. I am fine with the standard mmo combat system, but maybe find some different ways of making it happen.  A healer more focused on shields and HoTs and debuffs or maybe one that heals via inficting melee dmg, more class diversity, but make the changes to combat more to do with the mobs, like better AI and encounters etc.

i see what your saying here. but i also know skyrim isnt an fps.

I just hate first person games, although skyrim was so good I actually played it a bit. I like 3rd person games, games designed for 3rd person, not with a 3rd person mode.

I think that our culture is too collectively ADHD for a company to bother making a proper mmo any more. WoW, mmorpgs to the lowest common denominator, is probably the best we can hope for.

I love when people use blanket statments like this. Obviously everyone who likes FPS games has ADHD and are ruining all the fun for real gamers like yourself.

Well, I think when you can put on the goggles and be IN the mmorpg they'll probably get it too right, that's probably 50 years off though. :)

IMO, DCUO got it right. Sure, they had/have some technical glitches, but it is good stuff.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

That's exactly what I was saying! Board drama queen much?

Arkham City / Red Dead Redemption

  • DJJazzyDJJazzy Member UncommonPosts: 2,053

    FPS quality combat.

  • atziluthatziluth Member UncommonPosts: 1,190

Vindictus mechanics with secret world skill wheel.

I have not intention of playing SW beyond beta, but the skill system is very nice.

a mix of DCUO and Vindictus would be good

  • RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

I prefer the FPS style combat in Mortal Online.  Granted, the magic combat still needs work, but overall, the vision for combat in MO is exactly what I enjoy most.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

  • centkincentkin Member RarePosts: 1,527

Actually a mix of cabal and vindictus if that is actually possible.

Cabal's combo system was very unique as the time that you did your rotation moves was important to how well they did and each successive move got harder and harder to time.

Adding a combo bar to vindictus's open area combat and allowing movement during the bar moves would make for quite the complex system but it would work fairly well at least in theory.

    thanks for the feedback guys.

  • lifesbrinklifesbrink Member UncommonPosts: 553

A cross between Dark Messiah and Skyrim would be awesome.  I want a stamina bar and the ability to sprint, which uses stamina.  Why is it games never have sprint?

My blog is a continuing story of what MMO's should be like.

As far as themepark combat goes I think TERA is my dream come true.

  • FredomSekerZFredomSekerZ Member Posts: 1,156

I think it would depend: Close or long range?

For close range, FPS isn't the view IMHO. Hack and slash, KOA action, TERA, whatever style of combat allows for great combos, blocks, parry, etc. It would be awesoem being able to kick your enemy in the face folowed by a barrage of arrw shots in mid-air.

If you look at Skyrim, melee combat is really repetative, but range magic and bow shots are perfect do to the crossair. So, use FPV for ranged.

Of course, the biggest problem is getting the right engin to handle these issues with tons of people on screen.
