I honestly haven't been following this game at all, but I ended up watching the TB's 3-part livestream recording and I found myself actually really wondering about this game.

It's definitely clunky / patchy in many places and given that this was released May 30th, that's not gonna change.

But, nevertheless, I liked many things I saw. The general presentation and environments were quite interesting (voice acting could use some work). Combat is iffy, but w/e. I'm really curious about the story part.

What was up with the whole thing where after speaking to the prophet, it sent you into some subway, you were called Sarah, and you saw some other-worldy stuff like it was in space? ??? ???

And then TB ended up walking into some teleporter area (Agatha or w/e it was called). Wha-

Does anyone know how far this goes? Are they planning to expand on this later in the game?

And TB was walking around, the world seemed very open, you could kinda walk places, but there were some "you can't go here" areas. How expansive is the world? Can you turn off those damn waypoint markers?

How do you guys feel about the game anyway? What are the strong points?

There gonna be any more betas or a trial maybe?

the npc calls you "Sarah"  because it's a flashback scene that has to do with the storyline.  you are seeing what happened some time ago through "Sarah's" eyes.

Agartha is the travel system in the game.  it's how you get to different zones.

the zone they had open in the beta so far was "decent size".    if you ever played WoW i would compare it to Barrens before Cataclysm.

the game is ok.  the quest system is really good,  combat is lacking.  i think they are trying to fix the combat before launch.

the next beta weekend  is june 15-18 i think.

Theres a beta weekend in a couple weeks. The subway was a flashback where you take the perspective of someone that was there and play through the scenario. Agartha is the main portal to all the zones in the game (9 or 10 so far i think)

The setting is the main selling point of this game. The crafting is like minecraft which is a nice change of pace. The quests have a nice interactive feel to them. Lots of puzzle solving, clicking on objects and searching for environmental clues.

The combat plays more like a trading card game with active dodging.

There are no player character levels. Rather you accumulate xp and cash it in for abilities. A single character can unlock all abilities (over 500 so far) you can have 7 active and 7 passive abilities activated at a time. Thus givinig a "deck" type feel.

This game is not going to appeal to everyone. But if you want to play a mmo in a modern setting with three factions, a darker feel and more cerebral game mechanics instead of action, this game is right up your alley.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

No. This isn't confirmed yet. Can we please wait until videos or word from Funcom before we talk about this? I bet that if there isn't one, there's going to be people complaining about how FC "lied" to them when they didn't say anything.

OP, about the combat, it's the starting area and it's alreayd been stated that the outer wheel wil have the more awesome and complex abilities. Will combat pick up alot more later on in both pve and pvp? I don't know ut we'll probably find out in the next BWE. You should try them out yourself to make sure if the games for you (IF FC opens up the OW, which they should to make better impressions)

Curious about this, as well. TB explicitly said he didn't see a dodging system, nor did I see one in any of the videos.

I heard good things about the crafting system.

And beta weekends are only for preorder customers it seems.

I'd not be at all surprised if Funcom announce a completely open BWE just before launch. At the moment BWE access is only gained by pre-ordering the game, and I suspect they'd like to keep that incentive in place for as long as possible.

I received a BWE invite for the "final" weekend, even though I never registered for beta, but I have an old Funcom account from AoC. Good move by Funcom, because I'd not really paid any attention to TSW until I received the invite. Knowing I'd get a look at the game before launch has made me do some research on the game, and now I'm actually quite excited about TSW :D

There is a dodge ability you can unlock and put into one of your active slots. I was mainly referring to being able to move while firing off your abilities. But yes, there is a dodge ability as well.

I don't recall beign able to dodge from attacks. At most I could get behind something and break line of sight but not flat out dodge it. If you literally mean moving while casting, that doesn't have anything to do with dodging. In what discipline is that dodge ability?

This game has a ton of potential, but I'm worried it will be too much of a standard themepark at the end of the day.  Also, this game plays like it's in fairly early beta in my opinion.  There are lots of small and medium sized bugs that need fixed, and I don't know if they are going to have time to fix them before launchin July.

By contrast, GW2 feels a lot more polished and ready to go, yet we don't even have a release date yet and it may drag on until Fall so they can get everything polshed further.

I already bought TSW and I am looking forward to jumping in and seeing if an in-game community forms, or if it will be another solo-fest themepark.   I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt.   I just hope they don't release another buggy game and tank it.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Despite the "exclusive beta" for preorder on the right of my screen  they are giving away 100,000s of keys, Nvidia has 40,000 or so and you can pick them up. It is TSW not GW2, I got one from gamespot the first beta weekend after it started so there are more than enough to meet demand.

I wonder if the players who paid for a year of age of conan got beta keys yet, they were raging last month.

One of them is in the shotgun tree. It wasn't accessible during the beta weekends.

In a video by the devs about combat & abilities, there was a dodging ability seen. Seemed to belong to Shotgun section. After I saw this, I went to the AO forums to get more info on it and it turned out that there seems to be another dodging ability in Assault Rifle, which places a grenade on the ground before the character does a backflip. Combined dodge and AoE attack. Yay!

Rumours go that there was dodging by double tapping introduced in the last CB patch, also a lot of animations were added. From what I've heard, Pistol animations now look a bit like Gun-Kata from the movie Equilibrium.

You obviously were part of the Age of Conan release.

I want this game to be good.  I want to pre-order.  But FunCom is the anti-Blizzard: Release a game, buugy or not, ready or not, just to appease FunCom's CFO and Board, and not when it's polished, balanced, and fun from start to finish.

Keeping fingers crossed that THIS time will be different with FunCom, but honestly not expecting it to be so.

actually, it appears that pre-orders are given access to the CBT as well as the OBT weekends. it is the OBT weekends which have had the floodgates opened.

that is not to say that the closer to release there won't be more CBT invites sent.

The Assault rifle skills from Inner and Outer Wheel are known so far and there's no ability in there called "Tactical Retreat". The character in the video also had Shotgun abilities in his action bar, so I assume it belongs to Shotgun, as you need the weapon equipped (look at his back, there's a Shotgun) to use an active ability of a tree.

For those of you asking about dodging, you can double tap one of the directional keys to do a short dash to that direction, very similair to GW2. So there is your dodge...

It's in a lot better state than Aoc beta, and wow beta too, people forget how buggy and incomplete wow was at launch, missing warlock & hunter talents, falling through gaps in the floor, random server outages, loot stuck bug which went on for years etc..

It's not up there with rift beta in terms of performance / bugs, but its in better state than swtor launch, similar to gw2 bwe bug wise, but with better performance, but to be fair gw2 is further out from launch.

The combat system is good once you learn it, the trouble with tbs video he was thing to play it like wow powering up one weapon on the wheel not using 2 and standing there casting a rotation, when your meant to move. There is one big problem though, the animations need more weight it feels a bit float. Also the inventory and pre built deck switching UI is cumbersome, but the rest if the UI is lovely, huge step up from Aoc horrible UI.

Yeah, I'm not particularly worried about the combat or floaty animations (can't say I'm a huge fan of GW2 animations, honestly). At least it seems they're doing something different with the skill system.

I'm more curious about the general leveling experience, since that's where I spend my time. Interested in GW2 for the same reason.

Err, "leveling", lol. No levels in this game...

Go to this link at the exact time that I linked.  Pause at 4:37 into the video.

The chat window says specifically at that moment:  "You have successfully used the Tactical Retreat"

Notice that the character at that exact moment has an assault rifle equiped and the shotgun is on the back.

Now notice as the back flip finishes, there is an AoE explosion as the grenade detonates.

There's progression in the game, but no levels.  The difference?  Progression gives you more options to explore and not as boxed in by numbers.  You also gain significantly more latitude growth in progression once you get past the first 1/3 of the game.  This last part is taken specifically from dev interviews about how their progression system works.

First 1/3 you gain power (like normal MMOs)

The last 2/3 of the game there's some power creep (through Talismans and Weapons), but the majority is about using different abilities for different situations.  This isn't a gimmick.  It's a main foundation of game design.  You WILL have to change you abilities around towards the later parts of the game to complete content.  Funcom has said this hundreds of times.  That's why there's so many options and everyone has access to all the abilities (no classes.)
