I wonder if at some point this mod will make one of the big companies try something more akin to this.

This is pretty likely. DayZ is, if nothing else, proof that there is an itch of this sort that needs some serious scratching. ;)

There is! It just seems impossible to derail these big companies from the norm, and I don't really blame them. Just hoping for a change image

"A recent update introduced diseases that can only be cured with hard-to-find antibiotics and which can be spread from player to player."

If you get too cold for too long you become ill, get the shakes and start coughing at inopportune moments. The illness is contagious, so if you come across another player who is coughing you've got a decision to make about how much contact you want with them. It's a simple mechanic at the moment, more or less a placeholder really. It's always worth remembering that DayZ, for all it's success, is still only at an early alpha stage.

If that were the case, I'd have very little faith in the product. To be honest, I can't see a major developer creating a game like this and getting it right. I feel as if a lot of publishers/suits don't quite understand why a game like DayZ is so appealing. Let me rephrase that. They do, but the games they're used to creating make way more money. They'd create a game that leans toward the DayZ direction (in order to ride the success wave), but end up botching the entire thing by making it too casual friendly. It would be watered-down to suit their usual audience.

"We wanted to create a gritty, survival based game, but still make it so anyone can pick up and play. Accessiblity is key!" They'd probably add a radar, regenerating health, less penalty for death, a cluttered hud, unlocks, insert overused, modern gameplay mechanic here. When's the last time a big developer created a niche game? Look at Ubisoft for example, they've more or less ruined their Tom Clancy titles. Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell have all been dumbed-down in order to appeal to a wider audience. Games like Rogue Spear or even Raven Shield just don't exist anymore. I had to fund Project Takedown via Kickstarter (thankfully they met their goal) for a chance to see a CQB, tactical shooter!

It's more about, "How can we create a product that turns a massive profit?" And less about creating an innovative and compelling game.

This would be great, but I fear that the major companies won't take the risk.  If they did, they would likely make it more "safe" to appeal to a wider audience, and in so doing, strip it of the hard edge that makes it appealing.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Who cares about major companies, I hope they all close from their greed and stupidity.

There is a future without them and it's a much better future.

    Indeed,

Big companies should take notice when players flocks to a mod in alpha stage. We desperatly need a good full-loot game and to quote Mr. Hall,

"I believe the persistent world combined with permanent death switches something over in the player's mind which causes them to play in a different way than they usually do, It sort of hot-wires on existing emotions and instinctive processes, which I think is why players are having some really emotionally intense and vivid experiences in the game."

The game is simply scary, and it gives me a shake I seldom get in videogames. The only two other games I got this feeling was UO and Darkfall.

I'm more looking forward on how the mod moves from its current state, and its really a fine line between them keeping the sort of atmosphere it has at this moment ( the danger, paranoia, and lack of resources ) to making it too easy to survive and loose its uniqueness, for instance walking around is not hard but it takes a long time to move from A to B resources nightcycle etc.. Getting a vehicle is even harder to achieve you really need to put some exploring hours ( made easier with several people ofc ), if they changed it that it allowed anyone to get a vehicle as soon as they come into the game it would ruin half the experience already cause it would made easier to just fast track around and just loot as many resources as quickly as possible.
