Mobile mmo maybe the secret to saving old mmo

herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925
I recently played around with order and chaos and Celtic heroes on iPad and realised what an untapped market mmo is on iPad especially when you consider that the new iPad is pretty strong, not laptop strong but.
It can easily run old eq and ultima online.when you consider uo is point and click it seems a no brainier to get into this lucrative new market.
At the moment the mmo market for tablet or iPad is simply cheap ripe off when the original games like eq could easily run on tis devices, just make it streaming like eq2 to preserve Hard drive space.

No for the love of god no! Keep that mobile BS away from the MMO genre. we really dont need any more crap that we already have. Last thing i need is one of those mobile d bags on my mmo genre.

Sogh mmo players are always resistant to change.i remember when ppl said laptop woll never go mainstream in mmorpg.

It's kinda hard to play mmos on touch screen :. I realize the whole people always resist change and everything but sometimes that change can be just plain bad. I tried pocket legends and movement was irritating and combat was a headache. Maybe they'll come out with something eventually but from what I've seen so far, bad idea.

^This, i dont mind some change here and there. Heck i am still here*been playing since 1997 in the mmo genre* so trust me i am ok with change but with mobile stuff just NO.  From what i have seen the Mobile type gaming community is just as bad as the Consule type.

The main problem with the mobile MMO idea is the interface.  The data connection and latency issues are another problem, but those can be worked out or avoided by using a WiFi connection.  Having to put your fingers in front of the viewing area just makes it more difficult to play.  Also, the screen size and pixel limitations makes it difficult for game studios to display an adequate interface without cluttering the screen.

There already are a couple MMOs for iPhone and Android.  Spacetime Studios is probably the biggest publisher of mobile MMOs that don't mimic browser MMOs.  Text-based MMOs that mimic old browser games with no animated graphics are far more common and clutter the mobile MMO market.

Modern MMOs are more suited for mobile, as the ability to play in small windows of time is key to the success of a mobile app currently.

Actually the new ipad has one of the best pixel on any system and a core capable of handling quite a bit.
The main issues i see is you need wifi esp if it is streaming and interface but if you played order and chaos its not so bad.
Mainstream mmo are not feasible on phones but i think on ipad and newer tablets its quite doable and a whole new large market.
Heck i am sure if uo goes ipad it could easily gain a huge following.
Also you need to keep the sub fee low like order and chaos did.

If you want to play MMORPGs on a tablet, then what's stopping you?  Start by getting a suitably powerful tablet:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152278

Download a game listed on this site.  Plug a gamepad into the USB port and you're ready to go.  Some games will be playable and some won't, but you'll probably have better luck than you would with an Atom netbook.

If you're using an iPad, then there's your problem.  Well, several problems, actually:  incompatible hardware, incompatible OS, and insufficiently powerful hardware.

Early next year, we should see Windows 8 tablets with AMD's upcoming Temash APU.  That should be a major step forward as compared to the Hondo APU in the MSI WindPad linked above.

I do miss many of 'old mmorpg' features and especially designing game more like virtual world and interdependability betwenn players. Yes.

I don't want to play mobile mmorpg's though

Personally I'm tired of mobile games. I tried a few mobile mmos and they weren't for me. Maby in a few years.

Actually talking about porting old mmo like uo or eq to iPad .agreed the current mmo available are rubbish.
But I think games like uo with its point and click system could really be fun on a tablet and give this games new life.

Isn't Richard Garriott and his new company "Portalarium" supposed to be working on a Ultima-like MMO for smartphones?

Granted I don't even own a smartphone or a tablet, but I am interested to see how that turns out.

Oh no....please no. Terribly SMALL screen do not make an enjoyable gameplay session make.  For years, people were just waiting for 20+ inch monitor to play their game on. Now, there are game being devolped that are on screens SMALLER then the first computers. Please DON'T go that route...it won't be fun in the long run.

Let's party like it is 1863!

Dunno why so much resistance.it will takes nothing from the usual mmo gamer but adds a totally new market and thus expands the genre

Ya we seen what that does*looks at wow in a evil way* No gracias, last thing we need is for the mmo genre to be made even more easy then it already is. Trust me mobile people only want a 10min game, they cant handle hours that it would take to do somthing in a MMO. They would kill the MMO genre faster.

I'd love to have an Android client for UO. The graphics are dated for a PC game, but they would fit a mobile game just fine. I have an unlimited data plan... =P

Re-release a hefty wad of classic Win98-era games on the ipad.  You average smart phone OS should easily exceed those old system requirements.  They ran on Pentiums, pffft.

Wait a few years for the gaming conservatives in the fan base to get used to the idea.

I have an Amiga emulator on my Android phone too - fun to be able to play some really great games again when bored in a waiting room or wherever else :)

Well, let's not go back too far :P

All that's really needed is enough capability to run the early releases of original MMOs (=not much).  Fifteen year old tech, that's a lifetime ago in computer years.

Don't underestimate Amiga games - some of them, on a small (4.3") phone screen, actually look BETTER than many commercial phone games - and are also ways "deeper", if you see what I mean :)
