Thank you commentor! Everyone else on this post has bashed and said it was my own fault, I know its not and I been playing MMORPGs for 15 years, I know its blizzards issue not mine
I don't have an authenticator. Then again, I don't play any Blizzard games. What (technically) makes this fancy gizmo so special?
It creates a random number you have to enter in order to be able to log in. If the numbers dont match, you cant log in. Blizzard isnt the only company to offer them....many games now offer Authenticators.

If your 100% on this, I would compile your info together....present it to them and get your real cash spent on the game and all their games back. Im sure if you can prove them wrong....they would have no other option but to refund you and take a second look at their IT department...hell, they might even hire you!

Right. So how often do those numbers change? Daily? Weekly? Monthly?

I can't enswer for blizzards, but in professional situations (govt) I have used cards that refresh anywhere from 10 seconds to 60 seconds.

it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience

LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"

I used to have to enter a new number every time I logged in, but now I think it's only required every week. I believe you can change this option in your account setting if you feel you are a potential risk, and set it back to every log in. Its a convenience feature...I havnt looked into it, but Im sure I read somwhere the options can be changed if you wish.

Please answer my question...
If it's Blizzard's fault and it's their security issue.. please explain how. In detail. I mean, you "know" it's their problem right? You say so yourself. So please, explain - in detail, with a complete breakdown of their security setup - how you "know" it's their fault. Give us a breakdown of the hardware they use. The software. The type of encryption used. Please explain what the weakness in it is that allows you to "know" it's their fault. Back up your claim.
1. How is it their fault that your username and password was compromised?
2. How is it that everyone using exactly the same "baseline security" has not also been hacked? How is it that in over 6 years of having a login with them, I've never been hacked? How is it that of everyone I know with a Blizzard account, only 1 has been hacked (and in their case it was the result of a keylogger they picked up on a fan site). Does Blizzard have a "special" security system that they only apply to select people and perhaps you were left out of that group?
Here's the problem with your case... Blaming Blizzard is not going to help you stop from getting your account compromised. Taking responsibility for your own info and your own actions will. Unfortunately for you, you have to get past that whole in-denial "blame everyone but yourself mode" first.
Just cracks me up the number of people who use the internet every day yet dont seem to know the basics of network security. Go take a entry level security class at your local community college this summer and learn a few things.
First off... just to get it out there Blizzard has not been compromised. If they were, they would be required by law to disclose this. Since they have publicly come out and said the opposite, they would be committing fraud and in some rather deep trouble were there servers actually compromised.
While blizzards servers ARE secure alot of other sites like this one here, may not be. If you have a shared email, login, or password, then all a hacker has to do is breach a fansite and they now have your information. They simply test these logins with a botnet and now have a nice collection of actual usable information. All of course which is outside blizzards hands.
Blizzard offers the ability for two factor authentication, which is a massive improvement over normal authentication. You are required to log in with something you have and something you know. Short of a retinal scan auth wise thats about as good as it gets.
Now granted there are a few other things they could do, such as forcing you to authorize each pc, device, etc. That would most likely be a massive expense on their part.
What folks dont know and seem to understand is the authenticators they sell arent cheap. Most of the time blizzard is selling them at a loss not to mention the cost of the servers and such that runs the entire opperation.
Blizzard has done FAR more than they are legally required to do. If you refuse to utilize what they offer (2 step auth) then its your own fault when you are popped.
But lets just stop with the tinfoil hattery claiming this is blizzards fault. Your account was compromised with no D3 server access. How? Thats for you to find out.

Ahhh, I see. Thanks for the responses. The time is the key to the authenticator's success then I suppose.
Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure.
That is a no...
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
