Who is Gabe Amatangelo?

bingbongbrosbingbongbros Member UncommonPosts: 689

So... Gabe Amatangelo.  Is currently the PVP & Endgame Content Lead Designer.

He started as just the pvp designer, must of gotten a promotion after the lay offs.

I didn't know much about this guy, who is notorious with the failings of Ilum versions 1 and 2 and 3.  And which also might be why all endgame content is buggy as hell still even after all this time.

So I did a little googling to see if I could dig up who he is and where he came from.  Was a little hard since most directed me to swtor only or Warhammer sites with zero information.

But alas, I found some!  He is a screenwriter! He read scripts and helped to decide which were worthy of being made into shows or movies.  And his college degree is in screenwriting!!!  I'm so glad he is the lead designer in a mmo!!

"What is your background? College? 1st job out of school? 1st game industry job? How long have you been with Mythic?
I graduated from University of Florida with a degree in Marketing and Screenwriting. My first job was at New Line Cinema in London. There I reviewed screenplays being considered for production and provided 'suggested' edits. Before I knew it I was knee deep in Hollywood shenanigans and wanted for the murder of countless 'darlings.' Two 'Hollywood' jobs later I started up a company where I wrote and produced featurettes that aired on channels like MTV, VH1, G4, etc. One of which was shown at E3, where I was introduced to Mythic Entertainment. Influenced by years of gaming, I was easily charmed with fanciful tales of round tables and Kobolds. The rest is history. Two-plus years of history thus far. "

It is fantastic people like Gabe that shows why WAR and SWTOR are winners and help lead this healthy genre into the future with zero chance of anything going wrong!

    So... Albert Einstein?

I didn't know much about this guy, who is notorious for his failings with basic mathematics and historical literature, which might be why he never met the required standards in several courses at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic.

So, I did a little Googling and came up with some rather startling facts. It was a little hard since most directed me only to things like the Nobel Prize.

But, alas, I found some! The guy was a patent clerk, can you believe it? A patent clerk! As if they know anything about advanced mathematics. Special Theory of Relativity, huh? Must have scammed it off someone with actual credentials. I mean, come on, the guy spent two years evaluating patents for electromagnetic devices. According to records, he was even passed over for promotion. That's right, Einstein couldn't hack it in a patent office.

See what I did there? Your assessment is equally just and merits the same scorn. What matter is the man's schooling or background, so long as his passion is sincere? For that matter, who are you to cast aspersions as to his character?

I'm going to apply for a neurosurgeon job cause my passion is so sincere.

Wow you folks keep trying to throw insults to anyone involved with TOR, or would dare play it. It is rather pathetic some of ya have been here for months, with no end in sight.

Since you wanna use sarcasm, let me retort with fact......Ya know Bioshock? A pretty awesome game if ya as me. Well Ken Levine  was established in a career that had nothing pertaing to game making.....yet on a whim he got into the business. The rest is history.

There are numerous examples of outsiders joining the ranks of game makers. There is not a damn person alive though that jumps into being a surgeon. The lone caveat being folks that stayed at a Holiday Inn, and we know those folks are royalty.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

Wow.  Thanks for proving that you have absolutely zero understanding of how things work in the real world.  Many people work in areas other than what their degree is in.

Young ignorant kids that have no understanding yet of the big world outside. Or adults who still live in mommy's basement and haven't seen daylight in years.  So understandable they are so narrowminded.

I studied laboratory technology (biotechnology and genetics), worked in an academic hospital for a year, but found out it's not for me. (horrible work atmosphere, low salaries, little to no work).

So in the year 2000 when there was a desperate need for IT pro's, I jumped ship, did a crash course in IT and build myself an IT carreer over the past 13 years!

I now earn far far more than I would ever be able to if I stayed in my studied profession (probably be out of a job most of the time too), enjoy my work and live a good life!

Oh wait.... that is not possible according to OP!  Oh noes....  /shrug

Same.  Primary background is broadcasting, TV and radio production.  I jumped in 1992.

The flip-side is that not everyone who jumps ends up competent in their new field.  I've worked with jumping IT applicants who couldn't find their compiler with both hands.

I love how people take what the OP says so personally as if he were talking about them. I did not see any place in the OP posts that said you can't or shouldn't jump fields or if you do jump fields that you have to by default suck at what you are doing. I don't know where some of you got that from.

The OP was simply stating that the guy who is currently the PVP & Endgame Content Lead Designer was not trained in this field. I think most people would recognize that the main problem that ToR has is in the end game and PvP.  Maybe since so much was riding on this project they should have hired someone with more experience. Maybe they should have hired someone with a history of making endgame and pvp content. Maybe even though many people do jump fields and are very competent in their new fileds this guy may not be. That is all I got out of the OP's post.

Similar, degree in Philosophy, was applying for masters in law. Decided I didn't care for that. I'm currently a biomed engineer and loving every minute of it.

Actually it kinda makes sense since he has a degree in marketing and screenwriting  and he knew what to say and show to make people interested in pvp to buy the game.
