They play vastly different from what I've seen. Also, what weapons you want to choose make a huge difference. But if I were to try and strreamline their gameplay:
-Necros are heavily reliant on condition damage and life drains. My personal experience with the pets was a disappointment, but I didn't get to unlock a lot of teh stronger ones in the last BWE so who knows. Their F1 special profession ability (Death shroud) is an immensely useful offense and defense tool. Gameplay seems very straightforward and aggressive.
-Mesmer gameplay varies a LOT based on weapon choices. Scepter is all about spamming clones, 1hsword is heavy melee damage, Greatsword is built for people that like to kite, staff is an AOE monster. Slightly less condition-based than necro, relies on sneaky tricks. GREAT mobility with powers like Blink and Portal (The latter being a faovirte of entire assault forces in wvw). Clones/Illusions as of BWE were very weak; Anet states they fixed them somewhat for BWE2. I'm looking forward to seeing the changes.
I am going to try the necro
Sucks to be stuck at work today....lol
What time things open up? 3PM EST?

I still haven't decided. This will be my first view of the game. Looking at all those videos, etc. hasn't helped me make up my mind. Sort of hovering between a necro and a thief but that might change by the time we get to log in.
I've never been hot on melee but the thief looks like it has a decent mixture of ranged/melee to make things interesting but I like the look of the necromancer as well. Not looked at the mesmer in any great detail yet.
Decisions...
For me, if I had to choose between a Mesmer and a Necro, I would pick a Mesmer. Mesmers are prob the most versatile profession in the game; and have many cool helpful utilities (second only to the Engineer). Having said that, all professions are fun to play.
I encourage you to use the BWEs to try them all, figure out what you enjoy playing and then play that when the game releases. What you don't want to do is to focus solelly on the profession that you know what you want to play during the BWEs, cause come release, there's a greater chance you'll be bored.
In the first beta i played the guardian and the thief.....in this one i'll be trying the necro and the warrior i think...Maybe the mesmer to see if i like the playstyle of that class.
FYI, all professionals (except maybe engineer and Ele....) have a decent mix of melee and ranged ability.
There's quite a few pistol and bow-oriented thieves out there, and rifle/bow warriors are viewed by many as being quite powerful.
My breakdown of the thief is this: high mobility, lowest damage mitigation of any "melee" profession. This leads many to think it's horribly squishy. It's really no squishier than warrior or Ranger, they just have more obvious defensive tools. Thief relies on CONSTANT movement. Leaping Death Blossom, when used properly, is like having an extra dodge roll that you can spam repeatedlly AND do AoE damage. The Steal mechanic needs work. I found myself using it more as a free gap closer than to get the special powers from it.
Thanks for that. I'll probably try a thief this time round. It'll be nice to get away from the old 1xtank, 2xDPS, 1xCC, 1xhealer mindset.
Oh yes, apologies to the OP for hijacking his thread
I mainly played Necros and Mesmers, so I'll chip in:
Necros are very versatile, and can draw from many different typos of utilities, survivability and damage. As with the Mesmer, the weapon choice will define what you plan to do. Dagger/_______ is great for life tapping at melee, and it is a suprisingly effective approach to combat. Axe is probably the most offensive weapon, and the burstier one. Staff is very control-based. Scepter is a nice mix of DoT and Control.
You need to have a clear idea, as a Necro, of what you'll use, and Trait accordingly. F1 is one of the best Profession specials, since it provides a LOT of Survivability and a decent amount of damage. I cannot stress how important it is for the class as a whole.
Mesmers are, in fact, surprisingly similar to Necros. Instead of Pets, they have Clones and Phantasms. Both deal a lot of conditions (usually different ones, though). Both can focus on different aspects to achieve different results. As a Mesmer, you'll need to think what you'll do with your clones. Will they be just a side perk, or an integral part of your DPS/Control output?
Staff Mesmer is probably the nastiest debuffer in the game. Chaos Cloud is a nightmarish sbility for the enemy. Scpeter is the Clone Factory. Sword is mobility/defense.
Anyway, you can't do wrong with any of them. Both are very dynamic and fun to play with.
Thanks for the feedback guys , and no , i still havent had the slightest idea what class to play , but at least i have certain awareness of what of those class can do and their playstyle (based on ur view).
Still, just keep giving the rest us ur past experience with any class.
I played both classes last BWE, though mostly staff necro. Necromancer has a lot of survivability despite being a cloth wearing class due to deathshroud. You basically get another health bar that you can refill by being around things dying. With the staff I did a lot of AoE damage over time with some snare and CC abilities thrown in. Pet AI isn't great for the necro but there are pet skills that give you a moderate amount of control. E.G. If a bone fiend is running toward an AOE effect you can root it to the ground to stop it's movement, or with the FG or Shadow Fiend you can order them to move to different targets ect to get them out of AOE. The necro didn't seem to have very good healing compared to other classes though.
Mesmer is a lot more about trickery. You can use clones to try and confuse the enemy, or use portals to get around castle walls or surprise the enemy, and they have some really nasty debuffs. I could see a mesmer being really tough to beat one on one but the tricks might not be as useful in big fights.
