I think it's funny seeing all the same names that trolled TSW, TERA, Diablo 3 etc etc for weeks in this forum defending the same thing they bashed other games for because its their beloved GW2.
Having finally played through a friend's account I can confirm for myself what I suspected all along. A few gimmicks, but still ultimately the same thing with some watered down features to promote interdependent zerging.
Originally posted by drakaena Yep. GW2 isn't competing against other MMO's for my attention. Because white frankly most other MMO's bore me too. It's competing against real life. It's fun for a bit but the lack of incentive and consequence makes it become rather repetitive.
Something simple like the winning server in WvWvW has exclusive access to a dungeon would do wonders for immersion imo.
Right - HoH was HUGE when GW1 came out because people really wanted to have access to the temple of ages dungeons. It would definitely be a start, but the problem is that then certain people wouldn't really be having fun. And in the world we live in where everyone gets a medal or a trophy, anti-fun is the plague eating away at risk vs reward.

I highly doubt you've played the game for more than an hour, if that. Dynamic Events, Sidekicking, Exploration and Personal Stories are fundamental to GW2's gameplay not just tacked on gimmicks.
Even the people complaining do not claim that the features are gimmicks, but rather that the implementation is flawed in some way.
I started feeling the same about most MMOs. Everything feels repetitive and at the end, you quite don't understand what's the reason behind it. Soon after, I figured, the problem wasn't the game/genere, it was me expecting too much of MMOs. We want to feel like a sense of accomplishment when we do something big in games, which happens often. The problem lies in our human nature afterwards. Once we accomplish X, we want Y. Then Z. Then it starts over again at AA then AB. There is no game that will satisfy our never end thirst for virtual accomplishments. Games will get repetitive. Games will get stale. Games will be born and games will die. If you think far ahead, which MMO seems good? Every MMO I know of doesn't change mechanics too often, nor maps, nor skills, nor design. There is no ultimate point to playing any video game besides FUN. And when that ends, you stop playing. To say "This will get boring soon, so I won't play it now" seems a bit ironic as everything will get boring sooner or later (especially with the amount of hours you put into it). IMO, the only thing that keeps MMOs fun is the human element: other humans who you can talk to, agree/disagree with, and possibly even share RL events with. To me that's where GW2 shines, because, by design, there is very little space for the elitist type of mentality. The only thing differentiating people will be skill (and possibly a tink in the mechanics, which gets nerfed judging by GW1).
I don't expect GW2 PvE or PvP to be fun forever. But as long as it's fun for now, I'm going to play. I'm not going to stop living just because I will eventually die.
This isn't meant as a troll post. I think the game is fun. And to be fair I haven't done much PvE content yet. But the PvP, while entertaining, is just becoming redundant without any purpose behind it. I guess there's competitive PvP tournaments to look forward to, but the maps are kind of bland. I'm not much of a fan of capture points. I can't see it holding my interest for long. I'd almost rather it just be a straight up arena. WvWvW is just meh. Everything is one big zerg. And yes, I read all about the strategies n such, but in reality it just feels zergy. Without any real incentive for me to be there. I have absolutely no attachment to any of my servers keeps n what not. It just feels kind of stale. Gameplay is cool n all, but I dunno how this game is going to hold my attention for longer than a month or so. It's a PvP game and PvP has no consequence whatsoever. I just wish there was more of a point to it all.
I could not care less for any of the game elements more than the pvp sinse I avoid pvp games. But I agree that things might get boring fast and my reason why it might get boring are the events. It reminds me of Rifts and that was not fun at all.Same goes for the personal story, you get 3 questions to ansver and if your ansewers are same for your alts then you get same story,so you will have to set different answers. would be better do random those I think, I dont like to lie when I answer those questions just to get slightly different story.
I don't think the problem is me at all. My problem is that in a day, week, month, or year, wvwvw is going to look exactly the same as the first time I set foot in it. My actions have absolutely zero effect. It's static.
Take a game like Archeage. You build your own castle, defend your territory for resources, live inside your own house. There's incentive to fight for it. It's yours!
If some guild sacks your keep, its gone. The environment changes. The game changes with player actions. GW2 while fun, feels generic.
I have a suggestion for you then, Play Archeage and not GW2. You choose to post here saying you didn't like it, for..whatever reason people do that. However you did say it was opinion, you weren't claiming facts or numbers. Your opinion means nothing to us, and everything to you.
I'm not upset in the slightest that you don't like this game and I can't see a reason other people would be either. If you don't like it, don't play it. Don't have to waste your time telling perfect strangers about it either tho eh?
Agreed, there are no games for everyone, and the only game even close is Tetris.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
I don't mean to assume anything about anyone here, but I completely agree with the people saying it just sounds like it's not for you.
I'll give an example. I play a lot of of Team Fortress 2, and you could apply the same thing you said about GW2 to it and be completely right. There's no incentive to play. You're not going to get rewarded with a bunch of stuff in game for just playing it (the whole weapon drop system aside - you get what I'm saying).
So why do you play? You don't have any incentive to go play a few rounds. You don't have any attachment to your control points.
It's because you're having fun. Have we really all gotten so caught up in the Skinner Box formula that we can't comprehend an MMORPG that's just a game meant to be fun? Personally, I'd still do WvWvW even if you got absolutely nothing from it. Because I enjoy it.
See that is one of the main problems for me.
A MMO shouldn't be able to be compared to an arcade FPS. It's even worse when considering the scope for skill in an FPS is a lot broader than in GW. The two types of games give different feelings and I don't play MMOs for the quick funbeans FPSs give me.
I like long winded MMOs without instant gratification, with tasks others might see as monotonous. They give you the feeling of accomplishment.
Am I on my own on this, is fun just fun..?
I think I need to keep remembering that GW2 is not sub-based, meaning they don't really need any form of carrot on a stick at all.
-sorry for any grammar errors; lack of sleep.
I had a feeling someone was going to take that wrong. No, I'm not comparing GW2 to an arcade FPS. If you'd like, I could compare it to Skyrim, or Just Cause 2, or literally any other game out there that you buy just to have fun with and doesn't charge you monthly. To me, I don't see where people are coming from with this instant gratification stuff. What were you expecting?
But you hit the nail on the head near the end there. GW2 does not need to string you along and keep you playing as long as possible. That means, yes, it may feel 'shallow'. But I would rather have shallow than WoW's 8 years of dungeon and gear bloat.
Wow. GW2 really does have the most rabid fanbois around. The OP posts a topic of how they aren't getting drawn into the game, and lists why they aren't having fun. Immediately attacked and told they are wrong, can't possibly like MMORGPs, and need to "go back to x game".
I can already tell the GW2 community is going to be amazing, and GW2 devs will get a lot of progressive feedback. < Sarcasm
GW2 is a good game, but lot of people will get bored after playing it for a week or so. Is my 2nd BW and tbh im already bored of the Structured pvp, it feel just too casual with people joining and quitting a game when they want without concecuences, they have tournaments but is just more of the same, the pvp in gw2 doesnt feel competitive at all. The WvW still need a lot of work, so far is just a ranger battlefield, is just useless to be melee.

After a week or so? Are you serious? C'mon! No matter what you are trying to achive with that statement , all I can say it's false! YOU do have alot to do in GW2. You don't feel comptetitive right now, because it's beta! You don't kinda feel the need to level your char, craft, WwW, etc! That's why I almost only playing battlegrounds right now, for the fun of the PvP! I am pretty sure, that on LIVE, you will change your mind! You will see

It's not that I dislike guild wars 2. It just feels so casual. It's hard for me to become invested. It's a lot of fun for a couple hours. Maybe my problem was I played allday.
I actually don't play any MMO's. Definitely not gear grinders. I knew what GW2 was when I bought it and feel they delivered on their promises.
The things I really like about the game are the class designs and combat. I enjoy weapon swapping quite a bit. I also hope future games copy the leveling process.
If you do intend on playing all day (which is definitely a good way of getting burnt out *on anything, not just GW2*), it might be better to try doing different things, instead of nothing but the same type of content. If you're not that player, it's understandable, but the game really shines when you mix things up a bit. Hell, the other night I played a little thief content (which I really enjoyed), then decided to hop into WvW and do some of that. The battles were pretty terrible this time around, it basically degraded into us distracting red and blue from dominating our homeworlds. While the diversion worked like a charm, it wasn't very fun, as we were blatantly outnumbered, out gunned, and they had all the territory as well. Once I got sick of that I went exploring for a bit, did some crafting, etc. Played the market for a bit.
The game is designed with many options in mind, and tries to cater to a lot of different playstyles. This is probably where that casual feeling comes from, as it doesn't force any one playstyle on the players. However, if you do switch things up a lot, I've found you can play the game a lot longer without feeling like you need a break.
Welcome to MMO's, and gaming, in general. You're just burned out on the genre, and possibly video gaming.
I think this is the most accurate analysis of the OP's post, and I am not saying that to insult the OP.... I agree with the OP: GW2 doesnt really add a whole lot for me either and I can already forsee myself getting bored with it. But I am sorta bored of MMOs.
Heres an interseting question: What do you guys think is the 'point to it all'? What causes games to be fun/engaging? Heres some possibilities of what we are looking for:
1) Social
A quality medium to meet and talk to other people. Sorta like how guys do not just hang out and talk, we like to do something while we talk, like play a game or sport as we chill out. SWG anyone?
2) Meaningful Leadership Roles
I think WvW could give players a chance to stand out as leaders of their servers and make a real impression on the community, if that is the end all you are looking for. EVE would probably be good for this and I cant help but think of Planetside.
3) Creative Outlet
GW2 doesnt have much as far as creative outlet goes, since it is not a sandbox. Minecraft maybe? Yes I miss SWG too!!
4) New Game Mechanics
Personally I would probably say I am looking for 2 things: a creative outlet and interesting new game mechanics. GW2 has some interesting gameplay with its skills and dodging combat system, but not incredibly interesting. Indie games are always a blast to check out because they have some funky new ideas that AAA's wont touch.
5) Gear/Level Grind
There is nothing more 'pointless' than a gear or level grind, so I sure hope that is not the 'point' the OP was hoping for. Sadly a ton of games are built on this, all the classics like EQ, Final Fantasy Online, and EQ-clones like WoW and all its wanna-bes.
6) Exploration
I think a lot of games have given me this... I am thinking SWG, minecraft, WoW, guildwars 2... All of them have a lot of exploration and 'cooooooll' moments when you find something new/exciting. EVE doesnt have this because all the spacestations look the same, lol?
I don't think the problem is me at all. My problem is that in a day, week, month, or year, wvwvw is going to look exactly the same as the first time I set foot in it. My actions have absolutely zero effect. It's static.

Hold your horses. He is allowed an opinion. He stating wvwvw being static with no effect. I agree with this. There needs to be a reward at the end like an effect on the world. I still dont Get why wvwvw has to go on for weeks before getting a winner. Who can wait that long
I didn't say he wasn't allowed an opinion, nor that you're not. I just don't understand why people feel compelled to let perfect strangers in on their opinion, when those opinions aren't going to hold any bearing on their own opinion.
Basically I'm just saying forums are dumb.
I can respect his and your opinion and disagree with them (which I do) without having to fight tooth and nail about it, I just never could wrap my noodle around why people care to type it out. You make a call, cool...don't need to call the press or nothin' cuz aren't going to be many that care.
*edit*
As for the paradox, hehe, more like being hipocritical..which it is. I was thinking about that myself. So, in conclusion, Bacon.
Well he brought up a point about wvwvw. I cant see you bringing up any pts regarding what he pointed out
Because I didn't. I don't personally feel I need to barrage you with my opinion on the matter. He doesn't like that it lasts 2 weeks, to him that's too long. Okay, he doesn't like it, I don't feel I need to argue with him about why I may and why he may not.
For your sake, I will say that I particularly enjoy the fact that the contests for WvWvW are long. The server wide bonuses for those matches are great little badges of server pride, and taking time to see the battles ebb and flow is rather enjoyable for me.
NOW my ultimate point here is, If you enjoy it, awesome. Hope to see you in the game, if you don't enjoy it, I'm sorry to hear that and I hope there's something out there for you that you will enjoy. I'm not here to get into a fight over opinions.
What I find entertaining is that while one poster thinks that 2 weeks is too long, another thinks 2 weeks is just right...
I'm sorry but is it just me who feels like I'd rather have some fixed enemies I'd be fighting then some random enemies rotated every 2 weeks?
Battlegrounds are just battlegrounds and some players love to do them over and over again. WvWvW will take some time until the majority of players have figured it out. Then it will be great and of course you should join a guild. Ok, you cannot build your own castle and it cannot be destroyed. But this kind of content creates additional problems. So far GW2 is the only MMO out there that has convincing pvp on a large scale with sieges, three factions and all the stuff we want.
DAoC?
Oh, wait, it's an old game, the graphics are "old", and you have to pay a subscription for playing.
Let's talk about this again when 3 months after release you are rather bored of WvW not going anywhere (not to mention all the birthing woes) and you have shelled out $60 while my subscription only cost $45.
People should face up to it: GW2 is just gathering, uniting lots of features from other games, but never really manages to achieve the same level of quality these features had in those other games.
it's a simple matter of quantity over quality with GW2.
People should face it: their opinion is just that, a personal opinion. It is not interchangeable with the rest of the human race, and should not be used for sweeping generalizations.
Welcome to MMO's, and gaming, in general. You're just burned out on the genre, and possibly video gaming.

Well, I'm sorry but what if that "gear or level grind" was fun?
Seriously, I'd rather slow progress my character thru 100s of quests only to have him at level 10 than chase him to top level in a day, IF those 100s of quests are fun.

Same thing happen during the beta of any game nowadays, people will calm down a while after launch.
I think the problem is that the people who get most upset fear that they will feel the same.
Just relax, it is just a game and either you enjoy it or not. If you don't you shouldn't play it and if you don´t enjoy any MMO anymore the genre might just not be for you anymore.
And it isn´t anyones fault if they don't enjoy it, that would be like saying people who like Mozart are better than people who don't.
On the other hand are some people here saying the game is trash without trying it or after playing the 5 min tutorial and that is stupid. Give the game a chanse (there will be a free trial before launch).
That and people maybe need to get better at mixing the games they play up a bit more. Being a huge fan of one title can hinder long term enjoyment sometimes.
Can't burn out too fast. Main reason why I haven't really taken part in the BWE this time..
PM before you report at least or you could just block.
I can relate to OP somewhat. For me it's the immersion that's bothering. Comparing to old frontier in DAOC, it felt a bit more epic so to speak. I don't like how EVERY structure in WvWvW is a capture point. Want more abandoned walls, houses, run down castles etc. The mini dungeon was great though, crappy reward though. PVP with the traps etc is amazing , nothing more satisfying than releasing a big as log in someones face
Don't get me wrong though i will play this game for 10 years and I LOVE IT. Would like some improvements for WvWvW though. Not gear rewards, maybe something similar to realm rank in DAOC though.
Originally posted by drakaena Well what is the point? There's competitive battlegrounds. That's cool I guess. But are you honestly impressed by those maps? Sure, large scale PvP between two well organized forces would be amazing, but how often do you really expect that to occur?
and even if you do become heated rivals with other guilds in WvWvW from diff servers, at the end of two weeks (or whatever it is), they reroll servers, and you'll likely never see them again.
true , 1 flaw wth WvWvW. If one server is boring , the rest of us wont be able to enjoy a trully fun worldwide pvp experience . i've been bugged when playing bwe since yest , sure now it's still beta there is millions of ppl willing to try the game , but what about 2 months after release ?
Will 3 low-population servers be able to give the fun experience of WvWvW than 3 highly popluated servers? if no , then more ppl will probably transfer to popluated servers. and dont give me "..you can do other stuffs.." excuses , WvWvW is like 50% of gw2 , not having tat means simpe dynamic questing , random bg and lil arena ..
Don't worry OP, you are not the first nor the last person who is going to feel this way. One maybe two playthroughs and the majority will be looking elsewhere for their gaming fix.

False... It's a game with same attention given to PvE and PvP... The fact that the PVP looks really awesome doesn't change a thing when it comes to the quality of the games PvE...
It's ment to be for both, PvE players, PvP players or those who play both of it...
PvP has little to none affect on the PvE (nor it should have). Besides the minor buffs and stuff like that gained from WvWvW nothing else is really changing the pve world so much and I agree with that... Keeping PvE separated from PvP as much as possible and get the most out of both aspects of the game...
I know I would feel really stupid if I only play PvE and then PvP starts interfeering with my PvE gameplay... That's the worse part of mmorpgs which I've played, mixing PvE with PvP (like PvP enabled zones on a PvE servers and such)...

Servers will be set up against eachother according to server standings... But if 1 server is better than other 2 (population wise) it's only up to the 2 servers with lower population to make an alliance and fight together against the big server and spread the fortresses in agreement... That's just 1 factor of using tactics in WvWvW...
People were complaining how boring PvP / PvE is in most games, now they get something where they have to actually adjust their whole strategy to new situations and think what they'll do and it's not good again... Now they're complaning how unfair it is and how it has flaws... lol...
But that'll probably happen only in first 2 weeks or so, untill servers get proper standings based on results...
And 1 thing is, you can't easily switch homeworlds... You can select only 1 homeworld and play WvWvW for your homeworld server... Since they didn't say anything about switching homeworlds on release we can't say people will just "reroll servers"..

Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!

What I find entertaining is that while one poster thinks that 2 weeks is too long, another thinks 2 weeks is just right...
I'm sorry but is it just me who feels like I'd rather have some fixed enemies I'd be fighting then some random enemies rotated every 2 weeks?
@Loke666
Not gear rewards, maybe something similar to realm rank in DAOC though.
true , 1 flaw wth WvWvW.
Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

"Happiness is not a destination. It is a method of life."
-------------------------------
Servers will be set up against eachother according to server standings...

Wow, that put a lot of ease , my mind that is. Regular server match-up will indeed solves the problem.
