Does this game offer anything for the "hardcore" crowd?

Now, I don't know how hardcore playing games like Darkfall and Mortal Online instead of WoW, LoL, and SWTOR makes me, but let's call it that. Basically, does GW2 offer anything for the full loot sandboxer?

A couple of examples of things that I am looking for:

- Actual skill-based gameplay

In Darkfall it was possible to defeat a whole siege force with a group of highly-skilled and coordinated players. In this sense it's not really balanced, but it's more realistic (like how the Mongols defeated armies 2x their size). This also led to stories like "dude, I got jumped in a forest by 3 guys and took them all out!". This was certainly possible in Darkfall if you had the right skill. Does GW have this? I'm a bit worried because I've been reading how it's super balanced. Theoretically, could you 3v1 or 5v1 in WvWvW, or is this a virtual impossibility in GW2, due to various restrictions that I am unaware about (like zergs)?

- The possibility of achieving anything at any given time

This is a weird one, but this is why I fell in love with Darkfall. Once you logged in, you never knew what was going to happen. You could stumble upon a dead grave with a rank 80 sword and dragon armor, you could stumble upon a boat being controlled by a whole clan, you could kill a farmer with 500 ore. That "possibility" of finding or achieving something that would make you rich or give you a decent advantage is what kept me playing really. Does GW2 offer this? Can you potentially find something amazing or do something crazy that you'll tell your clanmates stories about...like stealing siege weapons, etc? Not too familiar with GW features.

It's those unpredictable MMO experiences I live for.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I had similar thoughts at first.  The game from first glance appears to be a rather casual experience, but there really is alot of challenge and depth to it, especially if you're a pvp player (WvW).  My server controlled the entire WvW map ( all four maps ) for an extensive period of time today and without a dedicated leader and team, or skilled execution none of it would've happened.  (Props to the commanders- Ala and Maximumpanda, you guys were great).  Even for PVE, if you dont pay attention during normal mobs your going to die.  Theres alot you can put time into, and alot of to build up skill for.

It absolutely offers things for the hardcore player...it's hard as f**k.

Seriously, I spent about 20 minutes fighting a Champion with 2 other Elementalists, I'm a warrior, and I "tanked" that fight all the way through the 20 minutes without going down once.  Could not get hit more than 3 times within the span of about 15 seconds, and we came out victorious.

I used cripples, knockbacks, shield stuns, stun breaks for when he knocked me down, shield blocking, leap attacks, and a very fast healing skill (every 15 seconds) to jump in and out of range of his attacks without him clobbering me to death.  Most fun I've ever had with the game.  Took an incredible amount of alertness and class knowledge to do it.

And this was just a level 30 area, can't imagine the amazingly difficult fights that will come around in the 60's and 80's areas.

And thinking about the dungoens makes me quiver with excitement!

That seems pretty amazing and intense.

So is there enough scope of skill for people to be remembered? In DFO and MO there were a select few of very dangerous players that were feared whenever someone met them on the battlefield.

In WvW, enemy player's name does not show, so you not quite sure who you're facing. However, the name would probably be more glorious when doing structure PvP, and tournament. When you lose to that player and face them again in PvP, you probably be:

    1. I shall defeat you!
    2. Aw, not again...

    No.

It will be next to impossible to 1v3 or 1v5. However a small group of 5-10 can take out groups of 20-50 with siege weapons.

It's a fun game but there is no way you will get the adrenaline rush that you get with a game like Darkfall. You have nothing to lose in GW2. So the same fight or flight instincts don't kick in.

its typical themepark pvp, nothing to lose nothing to gain, fair fights in BGs, WvW is going to be a zerg fest. tab target heat seeking arrows and magic.  I will probably check it out only because it has no monthly sub, if it last more than a few months then cool if not then i will shelf it up with all the other failed MMOs i tried.

If you are skilled enough you can take out more than 1 enemy. However you can't do that just because you have better items/level than your enemies. It's your personal skill (or your teamwork) that counts. I still remember that Guardian defeating 5 players in structured PVP where players are same level, have access to all items/skills etc.....

There are lots of vids and a very informative sticky post you can see to learn about GW2 features. It is vastly different to Darkfall you should stay away of it if you are expecting a true sandbox game.

PS: When I read "hardcore" and then the word "Darkfall", moving around naked in order not to lose your armor if you die, came to my mind.

GW2 arena PvP will probably be really competitive and crazy like GW1 was....  Maybe not as much but still good.  Also if you like big battles you could try to tame the zerg of players who play WvW.  The commanding roles in that remind me a lot of planetside, similar strategies.

Uhm, no, not really. Nothing like Mortal Online or Darkfall. No Full Loot, no real sandbox either.

What makes you think that Full Loot sandboxes always require skill and not just a huge time-investment?

Anything? Hmmm, doubtful. There are rewards for exploration, but I doubt you'll get really big advantages because you spent a lot of time and got lucky. GW2 leans more towards a level playing field in PvP. If you're a hardcore player looking to "own" through living in the game and getting "Phat Lootz" then you might be disappointed. You'll need to actually be better at playing your class. Practice makes perfect so there's a possible advantage, but no ultra rare ûber-insta-win-items as far as I know.
