What sucks is the fact that, from all the interviews I've seen, it seems like everyone at that company enjoyed what they were doing and had a good enviroment, so it must be even more painful to lose a job at that studio.
I was surprised by how huge their team was considering their product. Was it something like 300 people? And how poorly run the company was. -Did they have an amateur running the show or what?

Looks like they were spending a rather massive amount of money on the Copernicus game unless I am misinterpreting it. I'm curious what the money was going into. Voice acting like SWTOR? The 38 studios wiki states that the Rhode Island Director of Economic Development or something like that resigned around the same time and that their may be a correllation. They had some A+ talent with RA Salvatore and Todd McFarlane, but my guess it was probably just some lame themepark anyway...

You must've read the article with an angry voice in your head. He's not looking for pity or handouts. He wrote a short article on an upsetting period of his life.

People who go through this need to get back on the horse as quickly as possible - one post is good, it calms the turbulent emotions sloshing around by giving them a narrative. But grieve then let go. They had several people who had never been involved with writing software or games running the company. They may not have realized when the designers or developers asked for 300 people that it might be a little excessive.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Hell, I'm not a pro and I know 300 people is way way way too many people. Its not like you can throw manpower against every problem that comes up this being software industry and all. Hell, a first-year IT student should know that.

Yeah over 330 employees. I was amazed when I first read that and questioned that could they even make a decent game given the fact that the head people knew they were in debt with 330 employees but still borrowed millions. I mean it doesn't take a rocket scientist when you are not making money you certainly don't keep 330+ people hired. They should of cut 300 of them long time ago or just not of hired them to begin with.
Some AAA titles get done with 30-50 people, so why couldn't they have? The only solid thing they had been working on when they were at 300+ employees was KOA, at least some confirmed they only had one other tiny project at that time going, that didn't need 330+ employees.

Been in that situation myself, and yeah it hurts like a son of a bitch, especially if that is where your passion truly lies and you've found a productive outlet to focus your talents into.
It's easy to be snarky and dismissive, I guess that makes people feel like they look cool, but it's another to have loved and lost in a situation like this. My heart goes out to the folks that actually put their 110% into this company, only to see it fail.
Hopefully enough of them established a deep enough bond that they open a new start-up development company and create some indie hit down the road.

Sad truth however the US has become a nation of whiney lazy worthless stupid people with an entitlement attitude.
In fact I am EXTREMELY surprised that our corrupt unconstitutional entitlement government didnt piss on the US constitution and the american taxpayers once again and bail these losers out as well. I am sure that if 38 studios had, had the intelligence to offer some senators or congressmen a nice fat kickback that we would have been paying for this failed company as well.
They spent all their cash on hiring RA salvatore and Todd McFarlane and then was left with little cash for the actual game.
Not really, they just hired in too many people or work on the game took too long time.
It is a sad story and while I ain´t sure how good the game would have been I wish the former employees the best. It really sucks to work on something that long that never will see the light of day, that is far worse than losing your job.

I agree with you Gajari, some people like to comment on almost everything, and make a contest out of everything.
You know, I feel sorry for him, alot of us have been through these sorts of things before and I think it's important that he vents alittle bit, some people hurt differently then others so who the hell do you think you are to comment on that?
Where I work there are at least 5-6 people a week or even daily that are getting let go because of recession, mind you it's not the company I work for but a individual firm, and it's hard to see good people loosing their careers, people who built companies and are generaly paid less then the CEO's of these said companies, to me makes no sense what so ever.
But after reading his entire colum, it opened my eyes that we are far from having safe , secure careers and that things are about to get worse, I just feel sorry for him because he has to go back out there, try to find another job make ends meet and try to support his family at the same time, and some people don't even get through these sorts of things and end up in very bad situations.
So, to feel sorry for someone like this means your human and have a heart, for the rest of you who make comments like Mr.perfect up there, there's another word I would like to use but I prefer not to get banned.
