Cleric tanking?

ereyethirnereyethirn Member Posts: 79

I played this game when it was first released but then left because of a busy life. Now that it has quietened down I am thinking of comming back to it and trying to get to max level before the newly announced expansion is released. When I played, I played a cleric who i got to level 30(ish) and I originally planned to have his as a tank and a healer (with the multiple soulsness) but then I found that they were the most god awful tanks in the universe (despite having souls made specifically for them to tank) So I was just wonderring: Have they improved cleric tanking and is it viable now? I mainly want to tank and I don't particularly wanna make a brand new character just to be a viable tank (but I will if I must) so anything anyone could say to help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • this is all imho here, but having one of each class of tank makes life a lot easier for progression. there are times when having a rogue tank fits the bill nicely, while some fights a warrior does really well. other fights a cleric tank makes life easy mode. we have at least one of each in guild for progression reasons and it makes things run really smooth.

also imo here but i feel all tanks hold aggro and survive just fine. we use each in ID and they all work well.

the thing about Rift though is you can level up one of each class to 50 and try each style out before you invest into one full time. the leveing in this game is cake. takes about 2 days of gameplay to hit cap, and you can speed that up if you know what you're doing.

    good luck and have fun.

too add my 2 cents, cleric tanking is nice but absolutely terrible for any form of progression raiding (short of a handfull of fights where it is not) but for 95% of the fights i would bring a warrior over a cleric tank any day of the week.

I have a Cleric tank and Rogue tank so my advice would be to reroll a Warrior tank.

Cleric tanking has improved but they are still only used for a couple boss encounters.

A Warrior tank is used 90% of the time.

If you want to play a Cleric then go healer because class balance does not exist in Rift.

If I was a new player or going to start again, I agree go warrior.

Cleric tanks are good though however dont have the same choice as warriors, as most builds now push you into 51 justicar for ID.

Rogue tanks, im sorry to say just  dont do it. They have great shields self buffs etc, but fall behind the other 2 tank classes. For example, we tried a rogue tank on Laethys, CD are great for the breath, but he was getting smashed rest of the time.

My Cleric is my favorite Rift character because he's a good 5 man tank, anytime healer and DPS.

50 Justicar, the rest depend on what you prefer. Healing generates aggro so pull, line-of-sight, and use DoL to bring everything to you.

You'll have less HPs and mitigation than a war or rogue but your healing will make up for it.

Sacred Heirloom of Eth is a must once you hit 50.
