Olderish comp and which version to use?

I have an olderish computer.

E8400 , 4g ram and a 4870 512mb.  

Given this I understand the arma 2 free + OA has lower res textures, and Arma 2 CO uses the higher res textures.  Which my older system, should I just got free +OA expansion, or can I take advantage of the higher res textures?

 

Edit:  Or does it look just fine with the free version?

IMHO, you might struggle to run the game.  The Arma engine is CPU intensive from what I hear an E8400 might have a little difficuly running the game.  This is just from what I hear, don't have any experience running any of the Arma games on a core2duo.

 

I beleive as far as the textures, CO and OA+Armafree use the same textures.  The high res textures you can get are from purchasing the DLC, Private Military Company and British Armed Forces. 

 

I may be completely mistaken on all of this lol so I apologize in advance.  I would definitely try out the free version of Arma and see if your comp can handle before buying anything.

I'm going to go ahead and blame my inablility to think of  downloading and trying the free version before deciding on which to use, on a long day at work. Yeah .. thats it..   Lol, thanks for that.

You should be able to run the game just fine. You won't ofcourse be able to run it on max settings but the game will be playable with the normal textures with 20+ fps in most cases. You may need my 'shuddering' fix that is in the info sticky at the top of this forum if your game freezes every couple of seconds however.

Just as a follow up, the game runs great.  I went ahead and bought the steam Combine ops.  Whatever the game defaults to was what I ran in, and it was smooth.
