..., why not WoW? Blizzard has a state-of-the-art of pretty much everything so couldn't they be more than capable of making all players play on one world, instead of 75 of them?
How many people play at one time during peak hours and how many square miles do all playable lands have? Or what RL state or country does Azeroth's land area compare to?

I suppose the first reason is the different types of servers.
There must be some other rational behind it. Blizzard aint a bunch of mugs. They probably considered the one-world idea and went with different servers for a good reason.

EVE Online is not a good comparison. I would say it has to do with the graphics. EVE doesn't have characters to model. As wonderful as it is, space is pretty much the same looking from area to area. WoW on the other hand not only has different geographical areas it is populated with a variety of characters that have a different movements associated with them - all of which has to be modeled and run seamlessly for gameplay.
For instance,
When you dock to repair/trade/craft your interface is static. Your background is a picture of a docking station. The only thing that changes is your windows you pull which consist of a list of data. This is very easy to "model".
Now take WoW when you go to Ironforge to do the same thing, your background is ever changing. People are running about, dancing, sleeping, building campfires, opening portals. This is more difficult to model.
You also have to look at the size of the game world, and the number of players. There's no way WoW could fit 250,000 users (their record concurrant user count) all at once into their game world. That would be like 2,000 players in EVERY ZONE!!! All you could do is sit around and wait and camp spawns. Even now, when the server pop is capped around 2,500, some areas have all of the creatures already dead. And we won't talk about WoW's lag.
EVE can do it because they've got an insanely big game "world", and less players. 15,000 I think is their record for concurrant users (correct me if I'm wrong). Wish was attempting to get 100,000+ into one game world, but they determined their game wasn't financially feasible.
If the world was designed for it, it would be great to have huge numbers of players all on one server. Most current games, it would just make for a miserable experience.

overpopulation is a big problem evan if the lagg is non existent,hope in the future the world is big enough to be on the same map cause this would be best accurate.
but they should have at least let us move with our chars to other servers
and dont tell me that the reason they didnt do this is that u cant have a horde account same server as an alliance account
games are not perfect but i hope in the future they will be more and more accurate and fair

hm i dont see why not in just PvR where u only kill the computer u could have both alliance and horde in the same server.
in PvP might be restricted cause u could spy on the enemy
One more thing i dont like these mode like PvP or PvR ....just have one mode compatible with all
as long as u got more maps why have more categorys

i'd like to see in mmorpg
-One HUGE map
-at least two opposeing sides
-maybe the money system in PE so who wants the easy way is welcomed to it and the game company profits also to keep the game alive,bug free,expansions,etc
-a max level that u can have but make the game in a way that from the max level the real game begins
-no lag
-manny classes of heroes

yeah more servers for zone in the same map
sounds good but evan that could have problems cause some zones are more populated and some are not
anyway this should be the way we are heading
for starters they should let us move the chars to a dif server

Oh god no! I so don't want 300k players, at once, in the world of Azeroth, farming, swarming the AH, and being there at once.
Yes World of Warcraft has a huge map, but I'm happy enough the way it is now.
Oh and just so you know, companies merge servers due to lack of population! Not just cause they one day felt like it or they thought it would be fun for the players to be more people on 1 server rather than being all seperated.
And World of Warcraft is not lacking population on any of their servers, they actually have too much!

the problem is in world and nature of such world size.
Eve world is a huge universe with 4 (5?) factions with tons of star system and so on... easy to do for a space sim as space is mostly.... empty.
So the 57000 players of EVE can live in the same server without problem (i would go as far as to say is a part of the success of the game).
WoW world is not as such. There are 3 newbie areas for each side... the world is simply not designed to keep 1mil+ people in it at the same time... not for lag... but for competition. imagining having to compete for those mobs in the newbie lands with about 150000 people... all trying to kill boars, bears, cats, scorpions, familiars or what not..... a disaster.

in his map 2500 players would have suffient space for them to hunt and quest etc
so we divied the numer of players that are subscribed to the game at 2500 its results X.
then we make the map X times bigger then normal
ofcourse this is not able at this time but in the future we can make very big maps
