When you start out, they give you 9 different weapons to choose from. 3 firearms, 3 meta-abilities, 3 hand-to-hand weapons.
I chose dual-pistols and was extremely underwhelmed by the dps. I didn't think they were as good as the shotgun you got in the first 'mission' and there are so many enemies with such a fast respawn the kiting stratagy I use for ranged weapons gets you in more trouble than it solves...
But I have limited experience in the game as I had about 2 hours of Beta3 to try things so I haven't tried, in the 'real world' the other weapons. I did notice while running around Kingsport/Kingsmouth/Kingswhatever that the Katana weilders were doing very good.
So, I'm curious, what did people choose for their initial weapons choice and how satisfied are you with your initial weapons choice? What did you find to be the strengths and weaknesses of you initial choice?

if you want strong dps right away i suggest shotgun with hammer... if you want pistol i find it works well with fists or chaos. There's a lot of options though but in the inner circle shotgun+hammer destroys things
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. I went with fist weapons as first choice im not sure what other weapon i wanna put in tehre but elementals seemed to have some pretty interesting stuff. There is the "Wu" deck that specs in fists and blood but it dint sparkle for me too much. been getting 250k crits and also fist do self healing so ive been grinding it out pretty easy.
On a side note, did i totally miss the part where i can hotkey pots? I did start playing last night at 2 in the morning played 4 hours so might have been a bit "distracted" but finding pots in the not too visually appealing inventory seemed a bit...meh

I've been finding shotgun / blade a useful combo. Shotgun has a lot of conal attacks that as long as the mobs are in front of you you can really hammer them. Blade you could fill up your hotbar with PBAOE attacks if you wanted.
The whole targeting system pretty much stinks right now, so the more you can make it irrelevant the better.
how so?

When you target at range and pull, there's a good chance your target will switch when the pack runs to you. Any ability with a cast time requires los at the end, so if a mob moves more than about 60 degrees to your side the cast will fail if it needs a target. Defensive targeting doesn't deselect even when you're far out of range, so if you clicked a quest npc to dialog then you'll need to deselect in order to use a targeted heal, etc.
The target switching is the worst part, but the mobs are highly mobile and the game encourages movement during combat, so the los issue is really annoying too.
i see, so far most my skill setups have been for AOE with maybe one or two big single target finishers for single stronger mobs so honestly I haven't run into this much as I don't change targets often at all

Pistol is fine dps/damage infact it's some of the best out there. The problems with weapon choices are that some peak earlier than others. In the case of pistol it has a strong affinity to for critting thanks to the passives sprinkled in the tree, that when coupled with multi hitting abilities, a secondary tree that takes advantages of that weakening and or affliction and you can have some great burst.
Shotgun/Hammer has the advantage of AoE and Single target damage once you get a few points into the trees. In addition shotguns are really cool, if slightly short range DPS'r and have some really nice passives or bonuses, like the single target blast that clears of a negative effect from your defensive target if the enemy is hindered. Since you get a hinder in the 1st SG tree...hooray for the SG!
Also, SG and Hammers both have several 'Blast' attacks so some of the passives work quite well together and bolster the opposite weapon.
Personally I like an AR/Shotgun build. Good range, some heals, plenty of debuffs at short range.
the reason you had such a good dps feeling with the shotgun in the tutorial was, because they gave you some higher levell skills with the shotgun during the tutorial.
i selected some defensive setup (going for healer maybe tank first) by choosing AR (leech shots convert the damage done into health gain) and blood magic (heal + barrier specials).
Thanks for the replys. I'm going to try pistols again, but work it with a better deck.
I did find blade/blood magic to be incredibly powerful. It has an AoE attack that shreds mobs and with the blood magic passives, the blade passives and a couple of blood magic heals.. You have to work hard to get yourself killed...
