We've all heard the rumors about TOR going F2P. But how do you think it would actually WORK in TOR? What parts of the game would be free and what parts would have to be purchased?
B2p or go to hell.Life has far more better things to do than paying for pixels
Are there better things to do than paying for light waves (maybe even pixels) when you see a movie as well as the sound waves of the movie dialoge as well as the music you listen to?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
They shouldn't even go F2P IMO, lets say they're holding at around a million subs, still profitable, just make the game better and people will come back, im really convinced that they haven't played their own game because the flaws were right there. But no, they seem to enjoy watching swtor bleed, which is sad because of how high my hopes were for it.
They will go heavy freemium style similar to Lotro, AoC or SoE games imho.
There will be enough free content to go to level ~ 20 maybe, then it will be paid to unlock. Various things in character progress will be locked out as well (like ability to spend more than few points in class trees), higher than low-med crafting will need unlocks as well.
Cash shop will be quite big + it will grow in time to very big size.
Almost all of new cosmetic items will be made for store, same with pets & speeders. There surely will be made many things made for store like : teleport devices to many places in-game, store-only separate health & force potions (like in Lotro), maybe things like store-only stat increases, best sockets for weapons, xp or valour multipliers, etc
In order to realistically play end-game dunegons, raids or pvp - most of people that are into that will have to pay sub or face 'heavy inconveniences' as game mechanics will be changed in order to fuel subscription or cash shop sales, etc
Of course all this will be done by baby steps, but it will be in place in like 6 months after Swtor go freemium.
All new content will be separately paid for in store. All new dungeons, zones, quest-lines, arenas, etc
Don't get it wrong. EA-BW will make f2p-freemium transition to make MORE money than they are doing now + they will have to recoup ADDITIONAL investments that are required to change game mechanics, make cash shop & maintain it. Not to mention to develop additional content that is needed to 'sweeten the deal' when they go f2p and heavy advertising.
F2P model need higher advertisement as playerbase is more fluid 'come & go' style.
Besides it is propably highest budget mmorpg in history and it is very new.
Knowing all that and knowing EA - they cannot go difffrent.
Forget B2P + small limited cash shop. It will not happen.
If they were going to go F2P I can think of a few things to sell.
Increased XP boosts.
Warzone Commendation boost.
Increased Warzone commendation cap. So you could have enough for full BM by the time you hit 80. This alone would make playing alts much more bearable for fresh 50's
Skins, skins and more skins. This seems to be what people are willing to spend the most money on. Different skins for clothing and vehicles.
We've all heard the rumors about TOR going F2P. But how do you think it would actually WORK in TOR? What parts of the game would be free and what parts would have to be purchased?
The same as all actual F2P games. You can play for free. Buy items from a shop. Done.
If the makers of Runes of Magic, Atlantica Online can make a massive profit off of games like that, Bioware can make far more with SWTOR.
Now if they go the route of the derp, and make it a pay trap like EQ2 or LOTRO...it wont work, pay traps dont make near the same amount as true F2P games do. The games werent good enough for subs...trying to trick people into subbing to be able to play it all is downright moronic.
Actually, I still think B2P is a good bet for SWTOR. I hold that this game isn't worth the sub, but what you'd get for a standard $60 box fee is at least as much as a typical sRPG, likely much more. The storytelling alone makes it worth at least two playthroughs, and after that you could shelve the game if you want and still feel like you got your money's worth. Throw in a little cosmetic item mall and some exp boosters or whatever to keep the game alive and going for those that continue playing, and I think the game would do much better than it's doing right now.
Its a good idea, but what about someone like me. I already bought the box. Would I be grandfathered in and be able to play for free because I purchased it day one?

Lots of sticky points to consider.
