This is the first game in 10 years that isn't trying to be anything other than itself. Sometimes, you'll encounter features that remind you of other games, but there isn't a single feature in GW2 that is there just because it's the industry standard. They're not trying to match any standard of fun or greatness except their own, and that's how great games used to be made.
I have watched char creation videos, game play videos, been on sites been on forums been standing in a Gamestop shop listning to the seller for an hour while he told me just how awesome the game is and what you can do in it, and still i fully fail to understand the hype of the game. so heres the question for all of you: Why is this game so good? what makes the game tick for you? I want a real explanation to it, not just "because pvp is awesome" give me some ideas to why this game should be something i rush out and buy thinking AWESOME cant wait to play this. and bear in mind this is not supposed to be a flamewar post, this is simply me asking you guys fan or not what makes this game tick for you people as i dont see it myself.
Innovation and Fun are the magic words. The game innovates almost on every possible feature, I don't understand how someone who played it thinks "it's the same old", perhaps not everyone can understand what is happening on their monitors I guess.
- Clear emphasis on "fun". They remove most (if not all) fun barriers out there. Gear grind, limited storage, travel times, LFG, xp grind etc. Even the crafting system has this great feature that allows you to craft 200 iron daggers in a few seconds, you don't have to wait for ages. In other words, Anet removed most time consuming tasks that are just that, ways to consume your time and limit your fun. You can login, play for 30 minutes and when you logout you will be sure you actually DID something. It's obvious that there are those who think that the above are "ruining" their fun, or immersion, because they love them, but I'm quite sure there is a huge amount of people who hate MMOs just because of those.
- Innovating quest system. You don't have to be at the proper "quest" in the chain to get rewards. When you kill a boss you're rewarded for it, no need to have taken a quest previously. The game is built around player cooperation, no kill-steal, mog-tagging etc, therefore more fun. Also quests don't always have set timers, they start with player interraction, watch some vids about Dynamic Events to understand how ages ahead this system is, to what other MMOs have. Hard to explain really!
I haven't even tried WvWvW so I can't comment on that. But I will soon
Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums
thank you all for your constructive posts and I agree in what most of you say, in the end I will just have to try it out and see if it catches, all in all I like what i have been told there is in the game, the thing is just when i watch the videos of various things im watching and thinking "why is this any better" kinda thoughts, but yes I will try it out and see..
Honestly I don't understand the appeal of the game either. I pre-ordered it and have played both of the beta weekends so far, but I really haven't been impressed. It just doesn't 'feel' right to me. The controls and the combat are really not what I would hope and the performance has been quite bad for me. I know this is a beta and I will of course wait to play the actual game when it is released, but I have to say I am definitely not in the 'GW2 is better than everything' camp. Quite the opposite at this point... but I will try to keep an open mind.

see you all in GW2
Well I don't know which video you watched but this one shows what Guild Wars 2 is doing better than any other MMO:
Honestly I don't understand the appeal of the game either. I pre-ordered it and have played both of the beta weekends so far, but I really haven't been impressed. It just doesn't 'feel' right to me. What were you hoping for? Maybe there's another game that does it better? Have you tried TSW, or TERA?
They are trying to do a lot of things differently to make it more fun. So the hype is well earned. The question is, if they will really succeed, but that we are going to see. Here a few bad things about MMOs and how they want to change it:
1. We are always wating a lot of time for a healer or a tank. Some of us have to play a healer/ tank although they do not want to.
GW2 throws away the holy trinity. Every class is more or less hybrid, can heal or buff a little bit.
2. I hate to grind for gear. It makes PvE tedious and PvP imbalanced.
In GW2 it is easy to get good gear for everybody. Later on there are only cosmetic changes.
3. It is always the same: Somebody tells me to kill 10 bandits and then I go to the area where I kill 10 bandits and return to the questgiver.
GW2 has no traditional questgivers anymore. If you see some bandits attacking a village, just help to defend against them. The game rewards you automatically. If you fail to hold back the bandits, something bad will happen.
4. In most MMOs everybody kills his own mobs. I am tired of kill-stealing, waiting cues, ninja-looting etc.!
In GW2 you just participate in what is happening around you. The game mechanics motivate players to work together and help each other.
5. Sometimes I want to have my own heroic questline, like in a singleplayer game, although it is an MMO.
GW2 has an instanced story for everybody, which is fully branching and has some funny and interesting twists.
6. We want castle sieges with siege weapons, strategy and three factions.
GW2 gives the community what it asked for.
7. In pen & paper there are riddles and traps, why not in MMOs?
GW2 has plenty of puzzles and traps.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
If there is one thing the recent hype failures have taught us then it is to not rush into buying games based on what the press features or what others claim. I've seen people having very mixed reactions about GW2, mostly because it just is overhyped and bears a high risk to not fulfill those high expectations for everyone.
Unless you are someone of the mindset "no sub fee, bet I'll get the 50-60 € money's worth out of the game in some way anyway" I'd also suggest you to play one of the beta weekends somehow before actually purchasing the game.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure I could probably get 50 dollars worth of value out of almost ANY AAA MMORPG. If they didn't have subscription fees I'd probably buy a lot more of them.
LOL
i would probably buy them all (my wife won't like that though...)

Unfortunately neither of them really float my boat either.
At the moment, I'm just waiting for something better to come along... Could be waiting a long time.

Yeah, that looks like a long wait. What else is there on the horizon?
Archage, Elder Scrolls Online, Neverwinter. None of those have a release window anytime soon, right?
Yep. At least a year wait for any of those I imagine. Oh well... maybe GW2 will be more fun than I expect when it is fully released and I will have something to tide me over in the meantime. I will certainly keep an open mind!
Very poor MMO on thing good so far is the WvW and sPvP but even that is looking more and more to be just zerging. Nothing like DAoC PvP yet. Really a boring game to play in BWE2 felt like playing WOW in PvE and PvP was just ranged AOE zergs! Of course the game is far from launch yet even though others like to think it should launch as is...LOL!

The "definition" of better varies from person to person. For many people Guild Wars 2 IS the best MMO at the moment (for a themepark at least). You obviously want something different from an MMO, maybe you could try looking at Archeage or Planetside 2 which offer something completely different to Guild Wars 2

i will say i felt inventory space was lacking but beyond that i agree
This is also something that hasnt been said before in this thread.
Gw2 has puzzles, people who love platforming also get their treat here, because platforming puzzles are a part of the game. Apparently WvW has a platforming puzzle hidden somewhere, which is said to take quite a while to finish. Also the minidungeons introduced in the most recent beta present more puzzles, in where you compete with other players on top of that.
- I find this extremely thrilling, and a cherry on top of huge cake.
i will say i felt inventory space was lacking but beyond that i agree
With the "deposit collectible" feature that sends all materials to storage instantly I had no problems with inventory space. Also, bags weren't hard to find/craft/buy

I play a lot of very different games and I am capable of enjoying a wide variety of them. I wouldn't say I am looking for any 'one' thing in a game. The only thing that matters to me is whether or not the game is fun. So far I have not have fun playing GW2. That doesn't mean I won't when it is actually released... and I am certainly going to give it a shot.
I have to say I don't understand why people get so defensive when anyone brings up an opinion that differs from 'GW2 IS AMAZING'. Does it really matter to you if I enjoy the game or not!?

Did we appear that defensive to you? I thought this thread was pretty civil so far. Seridan wasn't attacking you or being defensive either, was he?

was not aware of that feature but still would have been nice to have a little more starter inventory

Yep, that one isn't widely known yet. With salvaging and sending the materials to your bank, you'll pretty much never run into inventory problems as long as you do a short cleanup every 10 minutes or so.
Also, there's a "sell all junk" button now. Very handy

It is fun.
It is full of content.
The world has depth.
There are choices - don't like Human starter area, move to another- don't like PVE, move to WvW - don't like Personal Story, ignore it - etc.
It is more of the same except things are done differently to get the same result. Same old same old, it is just wrapped in a different colored paper.
Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!
