Not at all worth it. As a huge fan of D2 I can tell you now unless you enjoy games that are entirely based on buying things from an auction house for either in game gold (that eventually gets insanely hard to acquire in abundance) or real money. Heres an example- Having trouble on a boss? Go to AH buy items, roll over boss like a freight train. Inferno mode- Having trouble with everything because its balanced around using the auction house?- Buy items from the RMAH for real money, because all your gold is spent on repair bills. Oh and all those skills you get to customize with, useless, theres small amounts of viable builds for each class. Blizzard messed up here, bad.
Okay, this needs to stop. You don't need to buy a goddamn thing from the auction house; it's there for CONVENIENCE. The game is not balanced around the auction house, and you can go from Act 1 Normal to Act 4 Inferno without ever even looking at it. Yes, you may need to farm a little bit, but you had to do that in D2 as well.
I'm sorry you ruined your experience by buying things in the AH to faceroll content, but just because you did it doesn't mean it has to be done. This is a complete and utter lie.
Again, YOU NEVER NEED TO EVEN LOOK AT THE AUCTION HOUSE TO PLAY THE GAME. People who say otherwise quite frankly don't a have a clue as to what they're talking about.
That is entirely false, and you obviously haven't played the game past hell. The loot drops throughout every difficulty are no where near good enough to keep your character strong enough to progress, especially in late hell/inferno. Normal is a joke yes maybe you wont need the AH there, but on from there progressing through content is solely dependant on gear. What upsets me also is that individual players "skill" could only get someone so far, its a gear>skill game that forces you to get said gear from an auction house, not having single player like D2 reinforces my point, in D2 overcoming a challenging boss actually rewarded me with useful gear to keep my character strong, unlike d3.
If the loot drops 'aren't good enough', then tell me where all the good stuff on the AH is coming from? Oh yeah, PEOPLE ARE FINDING IT. Just because you have a bad run with the RNG doesn't mean the game is based off of using the AH.
Does the loot system need some work? Yes, I fully admit that. 100% random loot isn't the best way to go in a game where gear is such a large contributing factor to a character's power level, and I think class specific items need some love. But claiming the game is designed around the AH is just wrong. Hell, they just increased drop rates which pretty much blows that entire theory out of the water.
Believe me, I've had several sessions where I've wanted to kick the RNG in the nuts. I've also had several sessions where I wanted to take it out to dinner, lol. I've also felt that way about D2 on MANY occasions. It's nothing new, and the vast majority of loot in any ARPG is garbage.
Op, this is probably the last place you should come for a fair and unbiased opinion about a video game, especially one made by Blizzard. There are so many haters and fanbois that it's nearly impossible to filter through it.
You'd be better off asking a random person off the street. At least they won't burden you with their agenda...
To answer your question, I'd say yes it's worth it. I have about 80 hours in it and am still going strong.
Same as asking people on the street. Mmorpg.com has 1.6 million members. So you are Mr. Objective. No you arent. You defend D3 in ever thread regarding it. You mentioned fanbois. Uh huh.
The only reason you are saying this, is because you know before hand most people wont say nice things about it and you even say so. But you make it out to be that most posting here are anti Blizzard. And then you talk about agenda. There's plenty of posts about problems and many a complaint on the actual Blizzard D3 forum itself. Check Metacritic and the user scores. Oh but its just mmorpg.com. Nah guy, you just happen to DISAGREE with most people on "the street". Period.
Man, you are the one with the agenda if anyone has one. But Im glad you are enjoying the game.
I definitely got my moneys worth. Actually much more so than I did with Torchlight 1 and Titan Quest for instance in terms of hours per dollar.
But I have reservations suggesting D3 to anyone right now. If you've waited until now, I'd suggest waiting longer. They have a lot of work to do to fix itemization and drops. It's simply not fun farming for gear in D3 yet.
I became quickly bored of farming A1 inferno or A4 hell. Whenever I log in I've found myself ignoring my two chars in Inferno (Barb and DH) and instead leveling the other classes.
Originally posted by fundayz IMO, Not worth the full price. While its not a bad game per se, it deffinitely has nowhere near the replayability of D2, and online-only is a dealbreaker for me.

Well the game has its problems but for me its worth it , few more patches and most kinks will be worked out . Played diablo 1 and 2 myself to and did love those to , at that time i was alot yonger and did spend way more time on games so cannot say how diablo 3 is for hardcore players. Alot of ppl have problems with the always online thing and tho i understand it i like it myself keeps cheating way better in control ofcours its a downside if you have bad internet etc.
Ugh no, online-only does NOT keep cheaters away any better than offering offline mode. Offline mode had no relevance regarding the online cheaing in D2; the problem was lack of security on Blizzard's old Bnet servers.
It absolutely helps reduce hacks/dupes. It does nothing about bots though.

The is a difference in focus, or balancing, you are agrguing about, d2 was beatable in full blues, with some carefull shop-resetting for weapons. Was it fun in all blues? No, it was potion drinking all the way, but still possible. But that was your motivation, get gear to roflstomp the mobs. That is no longer the case for d3, your motivation is to get gear not to be roflstomped yourself, and you will get roflstomped regardless. Not quite the same.
All the weapons and stuff on the ah are from players who have found them days or weeks past the point they would need them (a wow-type ilevel linear system), a major contributing factor in the game being considered unfun.
Is the game balanced around the ah? Probably not, it misses many features a trade-based mmo balanced around commodity exchange would have (item sinks for one ). But the stats, drops and affixes ARE designed in a way that makes items far more random than you would expect from a game that makes your inventory icon blink every time you pick up a item or would highlingt the item annoyingly in the inventory as to expect it to be a possible upgrade for you. Which nearly never happens.
99.9% of all loot that drops will be useless to your character. 99.8% is probably useless to ANY character. So basically you're playing for that .2%... hoping that 1 in 500 items will be useful to someone.. and that you'll at least be able to sell it for a decent profit on the AH - so you can then possibly buy something useful for yourself.
Normal and Nightmare are amazingly easy. The only reason Hell is ever hard is because people forget to upgrade their gear. Sub-60 gear is almost 'free' in the AH - so this is no major expense.
Inferno difficulty just requires fancy gear with more useful stats (can't just get away with vitality and primestat now) - so the game just turns into a grind for gold (prices are now higher for useful gear @ 60) or that 1/1000 drop that you can actually use.
When you get enough, you can then go to act 2 and do it all over again....
The actual click-on-the-monsters-and-slaughter-them gameplay is absolutely fantastic, far beyond Diablo 2, probably the most fun hack & slash action of any game I've ever played. The difficulty is really sweetly tuned too, starts off very easy if you've ever played a clicky ARPG before but it escalated smoothly and Inferno is immensely punishing.
But as has been said already in this thread, there are real itemization issues. Infinite number of possible item combos + 7 million players + an auction house = you'll always be better off buying gear than hoping to find it yourself. Which is a bit of a bummer.
Worth it? Absolutely. I've gotten 150 or so hours entertainment so far and am still enjoying it immensely.

don't
it is not worth it
Yeah. Very fun game.
Need to grind in Inferno. However, if you like combat-centric game, if you like optimizing gear, you will like this game.
