If some of you are done with the SWTOR bashing, the snarky insults, the I hate EA, SOE is the devil and so on, my point is only that, at a games release if they choose to use subs, that's cool with me, go the F2P route with a cash shop ingame, not my favorite but that's fine too, but doing both rubs me the wrong way, it feels greedy.
And the fact that Funcom isn't going to the expense of a boxed copy, which I prefer yet is still charging $50 just seems like a big cash grab.
I am a Funcom fan, and I know that they said the cash shop was cosmetic, but I dont want to see a cash shop if I'm paying a subscription, that's just my opinion.
I don't give a rat if some mmorpg join date of yesterday wants to try and grief me because I like SWTOR, it has nothing to do with what I was albeit poorly trying to say.

It has everything to do with what you are trying to say because no matter what way you put it, 50 bucks in digital sales for a MMO is not ambitious. Period.
60 bucks is what is being charged with AAA MMOS. So your initital statement came off as hypocritical at best. Now continue with back handed insults and then accuse me for insulting you.
How does Wow having that equal most mmos? SWG didnt have that nor did AO,AC, UO, EQ, Shadowbane, SWTOR, AoC, LOTRO, DOAC and so on.
First of all $49.99 is pretty ambitious for a digital copy, the $15 a month sub fee should be a hands off to any cash shop or ingame adds.
I was gona get this title, I am not going to get this title any longer, I pay a sub fee to have a very active dev team crank out content and keep the salesmen from hasseling me ingame, I wont do a sub fee and a cash shop and certainly not with ingame adds to boot.
60 bucks is the new ambitious price for digital sales, you should know you played SWTOR.
I still do play SWTOR and I paid alot more than that, 150 bucks for my big bad CE, but your noob insult aside, fifty bucks is in my obviously superior opinion alot for some data.
Call me old fashioned but I think for that price you should get a disk, some stuff in a fancy box and what not, not just the satisfaction of allowing the pillaging to begin.
I was just trying to correct you because you are wrong regarding your '50 bucks is ambitious for digital sales'. So calling me a noob is kind of ironic considering you paid a lot more for SWTOR.
Once you deal with EA everything else you say about other companies being ambitious with 50 bucks is just ..well..hilarious!
Dont start personal little punk insults with me, I will wash the SWTOR hang ups and EA hate outa your mouth with soap. Stay on topic or go haunt some place else.
I guess this guy doesn't know what 'irony' means. hahaha.
Got to love how you go on defensive mode as soon as i brought 60 bucks price for SWTOR. And yet you point fingers at other companies for being ambitious with 50 bucks for digital sales..yeah right.
I am very much on topic but you are going offtrack with your insults.

Hey I know you just got here yesterday and stuff but your first comment in my post was about me playing SWTOR, I will say this again, I think $50 for a digital only release, plus a subscription, plus a cash shop is a poor model and I'd prefer just the sub and no cash shop.
There is no you in any of that, so if you have some issue with me paying 150 bucks for a big box full of stuff to play SWTOR, take it offline and PM me all about it.

UO and EQ both had cash shop while charging sub fees. Hell UO has been doing it since 2003 but for whatever reason you never heard people complaining about it. Anyway, this seems to be the trend most games are leaning towards now. If it really bothers you that much maybe it's time to take up a new hobby. As for the $49.99 for a digital copy that seems like a pretty standard price now a days.

With asnine generalisation like that i am glad you found a new hobby. Average age of MMO gamers have gone up with years not the other way around.
$50 is fina for a new release. Most games cost between $40-60. In the UK they cost between 25-40 pounds for new releases. THe secret world is the same price as any other new MMO.
However, P2P + cashshop + advertising turns Funcom into the very incarnation of greed. You thought Activision is charging you a lot? Loool. MMOs are becoming just as expensive if not more so than console games. What's next? Are we getting new patches as DLCs? I can see this as the ultimate payment model - box price + sub + cash shop + advertising + DLCs.
I am surprised so many people are OK with this especially given that this is Funcom... I guess Blizzard is the company that everyone here hates and everything else is fine lol.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

Glad your happy that I found a new hobby. Worry not though, each generations maistream kiddies will continue to change the landscape of gaming until you have had enough as well. Greed (when acceptable by the public) will continue to get worse . I have watched the de evolution of gaming Worlds into Single Player RPGS with online components- Graphics get better as gameplay grows more shallow.
Soon the Farmville crowd will dominate "MMORPGs" and maybe you will get a slot to put quartrs into so you cab PAY BY THE MINIUTE while watching ads and enjoying your cash shops.
Sorry but this is the truth- Its already to a point people said it would never reach and yet people (the next generation of gamers mostly) are supporting it.
Meh- All things evolve I guess. Me? I am back to the gaming table of old and some decent single player games until someone does it right.

I have been playing MMOS since days of UO. And i have completely oppositie prespective to yours. If given a chance i will never go back to UO and EQ style of gameplay. I have seen MMOS evolve and get better with time and i consider myself lucky for all the options i have today. How many MMOS could you choose from back in days of UO?

3-4 plus muds...But I do not disagree with what you say either- UO was my favorite all time game but I could never go back. Games should have evolved from there not stagnated and certainly not become monotizad theme park clones.
My point however is about the entire evolution of the MMO and what it could have been. Linear and theme park with gated content or a vast open virtual fantasy world? And there should be room for both. But this nickle and diming has no part in the hobby nor does a cash shop plus sub.
Its the greed that is forcing cloned games upon us in money milking hamster wheels.

Nice pity party and high jacking of someone’s thread. Here's the thing though, no one cares. The fact that mmorpg's are the way they are now is no one’s fault but our own. We paid the companies making these games and we (as a hole) allowed them to continue with the trend. So, as stated before if you don't like it then don't play it and if you’re not playing mmos then you really have no business being here in the first place. See ya later and hope finding something different works out for you. Take care.
Let me wrap my feeble mind around this, they are selling a digital copy for $49.99, to play it there will be a $15 monthly fee, then they will also be running a cash shop ingame?
I'm all for subs if the content is Strong! but if this model is true I may pass on the feeding frenzy Funcom is creating for themselfs.
What's next ingame adds, I mean pick one or two Funcom.......not all of them.
Like has been said sadly this is the way things are going.. hell WoW has been doing it for ages now...
The cash shop in this is optional nothing in it will give you an advantage in game.. if you dont want to use it guess what dont use it...
Why another thread had to be opened about exactly the same thing dont know..
Logic dictates that digital downloads SHOULD be cheaper than a boxed copy, but it's most probably not as simple as it seems.
If the download direct from the game company was the cheapest option, the vast majority of fans would buy that version. That would mean that the retailers trying to move boxed copies would struggle to move their stock. They would either have to go into a price war with their supplier (Funcom), or be prepared to sit with excess inventory for a very long time.
Having your game being promoted in several retail outlets increases it's overall exposure. The game is prominently displayed on the shelves in stores, and gets front page rankings on Amazon. The retailers are often allowed to even undercut the digital download price.
I haven't bought a single downloaded game in the past 5 years, because I've always bought it from Amazon for less.
allmost 400 posts in two weeks all defending titles with good grammar and accurate idiosyncrasies, they must pay you well.
Nah actually i get paid nothing and summer holidays in Paris gives me a lot of free time to post as much as i can. I still have another 2 weeks off but like i said i wish i was paid..who can say no to extra income.
But why so angry? they don't pay you enough for bashing all the titles with bad grammar and inaccurate idiosyncrasies? not their fault you know. With your amount of posts and join date you seem to be in this business for quite some time. Gotto step up dude.

Now, let's get back on topic.
LOL- Your really silly.
I havnt been paying for games in this genre for quite awhile with a few exceptions so I am not part of the problem at all.
I am on topic since this thread is about the greed of having a sub vs cash shop.
And I will let the owners of this forum dictate if its my buisness being here.

You confuse me.
!) Prove that Funcom is making any money on advertising? Offering a MMORPG.COM tshirt? Somehow i doubt they are making off that other then fee advertising both ways.
Second you say its ok for Blizzard to have a sub, and charge $25 for a ingame mount that does give a advantage, but its wrong for Funcom to have a sub and sell cosmetic clothing that gives no stats/bonuses?
Companies are out to make money, most good companies take most of the money they make and reinvest it in their game (good for the game ie patches/expansion, good for the economy. allows new programmers/graphic designers etc to be hired etc) The thought that every game developer is out to rape their customers and take huge sums of money to their personal accounts while the games themselves wither and die my be true for some companies but not all.
Other then AO release I have had few real complaints with Funcom over the many years sorry to hear your experience has been different, but then fortunately for you (as you pointed out) theres Blizzard for you to go pay and play with.
just have to accept these games are now completely owned by kids. i cant imagine someone who actually works for a living paying to make their digital horse's feet catch on fire.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already

I wish people would stop with generalisations. You can still make your point without resorting to blanket statements.

I think just giving you -1 is lot more constructive than making blanked statements about gamers and generalise them all into category of 'spoiled kids'.
I don't need to block you, there is a reason why mods exist

Yes but we ALL make blanket generalizations. Granted its not ALL kiddies using these shops but the demographic is certainly the "newer" generation of gamers.
I enjoyed the hell out of Vanilla WOW (had a BLAST and still say "WOW" kiddies- Because thats what it became. Granted there are still mature adults, hard core gamers etc... But its gotten far "younger" and more casual every update. Thus the term (which isnt all encompassing)

Why would they pay him if the only person he can convince is himself?
No, he's the real deal. Amazing, really.

Thanks
Then you have a very poor understanding of the human species
I wish people would stop with generalisations. You can still make your point without resorting to blanket statements.
then block me .. or just post crap like -1 again if it makes you feel special .. that's obviously far more constructive.
