The story, atmosphere, and quests are arguably the best I have ever seen in the MMO genre.

Title says it all. The atmosphere is phenomenal. They did a great job of creating a lovecraftian/Stephen King world.

The stories are fantastic as well (although the very beginning is a bit blah) but it picks up fast. The cutscenes are extremely well done. I actually wanna watch most of them instead of just hitting escape like in SWTOR. The adult themed humor really helps with immersion too.

And finally the quests are simply hands down the best that have ever been done  for MMO's. While some are pretty run of the mill, others are masterpieces (and theres plenty of them).

If only they had nailed combat (which is a bit lackluster) this game would have been a solid 9+. Hopefully they can improve on it in the future. I'm sure this game will end up going Freemium within a year but I expect it to be quite successful on that model and to hold its own for many years. Looks like it will be the EVE of its little subgenre in the MMO realm.

Atmosphere and story is why I picked this game up in spite of my complaints about combat, customization, etc. I may not stick with the game long (gonna really give it a chance though), but Funcom has done something really different here, and it deserves to be rewarded.

C'mon patcher, hurry up and finish already! :(

thought you left the forums? couldn't stay away huh?:P I agree having a lot of fun right now and aside from some minor bugs here and there nothing major and game is running very well so far.

And it's so nice to have no censoring of the spoken parts in cut scenes. Odd as this may sound, all the cussing from the guy at the junkyard and the hippie helps make those characters more believable and organic.

Loved the Templar mission in NYC in a dark garage using a helmet light...I don't remember ever experiencing in an MMO the uneasiness you sometimes feel in FPS games in very dark places.

The ambient music for gheto blasters, radios, etc. is extremely well done. And I can tell that many of the ambient sounds are sampled at a quality level that I ususally associate with movies... the unmistakable sound of skatboards when you're near the skate park, seagulls.

This game is very well done with unbelievable attention to detail..

The setting and lore and story are really good, and probably the only selling point of this game. The quests so far have boiled down to kill X, collect Y, fedex quests.

I feel it's the same as SWTOR, lipstick on a pig.

There are the unique "adventure/ARGish" quests which I haven't bothered with quite yet, and I assume those are the good ones.

    ---

I like the game, don't get me wrong, I'll play it for a month or two. I just don't really think the actual meat of the quests is that great.

I totally agree, so after the last beta I pre ordered mine.

Unfortunately I have seen few prominent blogger/reviewer who gave it a wow clone review.

Here is one http://tobolds.blogspot.com/2012/06/secret-world-beta-impressions.html .  This is same guy who think Skyrim and upcoming GW2 are not worth playing.

It appears you actually do enjoy MMORPG.com after all. It also appears you prefer to slam games you don't plan on playing. So are you the problem or the solution?

Tobold?? HAHAHAHAH!! The guy who had a bone to pick with EVE skills system because he didn't understand it? I removed him from my RSS loooong time ago. People who are saying this is a wow clone or that the quests are the same old, either didn't play the game or they did but they aren't very smart.... the writing is awesone, read all the pieces of info you collect!

I agree with one exception - the cutscene animations are stiff and very umm... 1990s? I generally either laugh or cringe about most cutscenes as the animations totally *kill* any sense of atmosphere (at least for me - your milage may vary)

Otherwise still having fun - so who cares?

Animations in cutscenes are a bit stiff true, butthe dialogs are really good

"Is it safe?" ah ah I am still laughing at that. If you aren't Illuminati you might not know what I am talking about though...

And reading The Lady margaret or The Fog is really really creepy and well written

Best story driven MMO experience so far :)

Complaints about the quest content are moot as far as I'm concerned, what else can you do with a quest system except kill this, collect that, deliver this or protect them? It's a theme park, if you expected anything different that's your fault. If you have alternatives then please post them....

At least TSW departs from the norm by demanding use of our brain matter with the investigation missions.

It's a refreshing and much needed change from high fantasy. I'm embracing and savouring every detail.

The investigation / ARG quests are probably the best thing I have done in an MMO since The Matrix Online had it's Live Event/ARG events. Even the first one was pretty tough, it's hard to get your brain out of the "go here, kill X, hand in, reward" mentality when playing an MMO but this one really does go for it.

Yeah, I've been having to figure stuff out on my own and it's unfamiliar territory after the last few years of MMORPG releases.

It's still too soon for me to pass a verdict on this game, having only played for a few hours. But I will say that it is the most different MMORPG I've played in a long time (excluding sandbox titles like EVE, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Xsyon, etc.). I mean among the games like WoW, Rift, AoC, Warhammer, Aion, LoTRO, etc., this game is the most different.

I've had a lot of fun. Most of the fun has been coming from learning my way around the game and my character and abilities. I don't even know if combat is fun yet or not, though I've probably killed close to 100 zombies and a couple of mini-bosses. To me that's not yet a factor. I'm just figuring out stuff like how to get a second weapon, what to do with AP and SP, how to handle picking up quests, how to dissassemble and assemble items, etc. It's all the real basic stuff.

The fun I'm having is really just in being a NOOB again!

I do want to say that I have more respect for Funcom now, for at least thinking differently and trying to bring out a new type of game. I don't know if everyone will like it. And I suspect most people won't. And that's a good thing to me. I don't even know if I will like it in the long run, but I'm am enjoying it a lot right now.

Sums my post up in a shorter version that I agree with. Especially the part about Funcom trying something different.

I almost want to keep subbing to TSW for as long as Funcome stays away from the , make it easy , make it WoW route. Just so future devs/companies might see it's better to go for a core audience for your own niche and quit making WoW in Star Wars space type games.

Kudos to Funcom for trying something different.

The atmosphere feels so much more grown up then the typical childish high fantasy MMO. So maybe finally a company realises that a deep dark mythic fantasy MMO might sell better then those mmos with stories aiming at 12 year olds.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

While I think it's possible to make an "adult" high fantasy game , it's just that devs have not gone that route , I am with you on the feel of the game seeming more grown up.

I noticed in chat last night that I wasn't in the minority seemingly with lots of other folks with kids/families and well over 30. Was refreshing for a change , as while nothing against younger folks , it is nice to game with people that understand real life issues that you also have.

When people rage about over 18 guild requirements etc , I always use the example of , while I know there are exceptions as in polite and intelligent teenagers are around in game , if I go out to a bar I'm going to go with my buddies , who are all over 30 , have wives and kids and mortgages etc , just because we relate to each other.

I dont socialize with 16 year olds or 20 year olds much because its just different being 40 and 20 - worlds apart - and I enjoy socializing in a guild with other folks who enjoy games still but also grasp emergency afk's because the two year just pulled  two year old stunt. No matter how "mature" a 16 year old is , they still aren't going to be in the same realm of understanding on issues like that and just general day to day life.

Again , I don't worry about age of who I group or chat with , just being friendly and non "OMFg thatZ GHey" (there are plenty of adults who are leet idiots also ) , but in a guild/cabal I do prefer it being majority adults with similar tastes/likes , just as I do when socializing in real life.

And seems TSW has a nice quantity of adults playing who also aren't 4chan morons. (meant aren't - edited)

Many polls have shown that the vast majority of MMO players are between 25 and 35 years old. Yes, including in games like World of Warcraft.

This kind of argument has always amused me... I've seen it in other games, like LOTRO, too. It always thought it was some kind of attempt to make one's game seem more "legit" or "mature" or just "better", a search for a justification to play it. At the end, you realize the overall community is just as immature than in any other MMO, and your only "protection" is to join a good guild.

I remember when Conan was released... "yeah, finally, a "mature" game with boobs and NPCs who curse!"... we see how it ended. But yeah... "hey, look at me, I'm playing a game with boobs, cursing and adult themes!" ;-)

While this is true it, anytime you focus a game to a specific audience you reduce your potential profitability. I think that Funcom knew this as I think their target subs are probably in the 100-200K range (SWTOR for example built and invested in infrastructure to support 10million players - as that was their target sub range).

This is good for gamers, I think it's good for Funcom as well as their vision was to build a smaller sub niche game - which TSW is.  This can be a very profitable model as long as you scale your infrastructure and control costs accordingly - you can have a  sub-100K playerbase game that is profitable.

Bioware/EA totally thought they had a WoW killer with their plans - boy were they wrong.

Main thing that killed SWTOR was how they made thier overall game worlds totally dead and lifeless. Total immersion killer for me. Didn't even apply different day and night cycles for the different planets and no science fiction atmosphere at all for the universe.

    100% agree with you here.

The impatience and angst I saw from a few who discovered they had to read and at least pay attention occasionally makes me feel confident this game truly will weed out that type after one month.

I think this might be one of the few games you could safely say won't "dumb it down" after a few months as the entire game is designed around not being that way.
