Sometimes hatred blinds
Extreme and misplaced devotion can also blind and I believe history has taught us that a few times. I think that's the point of many of the folks you describe as "angst ridden whinebags". They don't really hate the game, truth be told they're probably very impassioned about ww2ol. I would listen to them.
There is a middle ground, a third way --rational discussion. A good place to start would be transparency from the developers.
I don't know about it being dead. Certainly not on the order that the game has seen in the past in terms of numbers, but I haven't seen truly awful numbers until 0300 or later US CST.
I do know that I am seeing a lot more green tags in game and the squad I am in has had a good number join up. Some are returning players under a different name and others are new to the game. I'm sure some will be 30-day wonders and that's it, but more and more I'm seeing players that are sticking. I know that my squad's numbers have roughly doubled in the last 2 months during squad nights and off nights.
I realize that without an official database printout showing times and numbers and map locations this is just anectdotal on my part, but if I had access to the real database and associated programs I would go fix the digital elevation model and a few other things.
ive been doing my best to spread the word. i have 6 different forums i frequent posting videos. they have had over 3000 views since november, with 300 views today on the CnC dogfight video. i can at least hope a few of those greentags are from my websites.

The most vocal critics seem to have subscribed for years, or were deeply involved in the game in some manner.
A lot of people are upset that the developers have screwed up so badly and refuse to fix things, sometimes even refusing that there's a problem or that some decision failed. The fan boys who support them 100% just add to the annoyance.
I will say that it's depressing to see something on the forums where a person asks about a feature or possible tweak to the game, and I can search for a thread and find almost the exact same request/proposal from one or two years ago.
Like the FRU thing. A lot of people hated it's introduction, a lot of people hated the rebuild timer...it's a critical game play element yet here we are years later and deployment is still based on time instead of distance, we still don't have a model that doesn't require a massive suspension of disbelief(it's a pile of boxes instead of a bunker or something), and we still haven't had a rollback to something that worked well despite it's flaws(the mobile spawn). This should be a small thing, it's not like we're asking for a massive content upgrade here.

Dunno, got pretty good myself multipositioning in tanks hehe. Dang things never wanted to go in a straight line so was a pain to get it railed before switching to gunner and have it still drive straight down the road heh.
Commander position out of the turret while tank drives blindly hopefully missing trees, spot enemy.
Swap to gunner, get turret rotating
Swap to driver, put on brakes
Swap back to gunner, wait until tank stops rocking...
If it was bombers, you probably could do two at a time, just have to stagger the takeoffs.

And at the time, they could have modified the MSP for the some who didn't like it's gameyness, namely the ability to spawn behind the city. If there was some range limit from the FB, at least you'd have gotten back to something that looks like a battle line which would have made people happy. If you're going to sell yourself as a war 'sim' and have players who've subscribed for that, better not to have spawns that can be anywhere, no rhyme or reason. Each addition was like another straw that broke the next group of players back.

One great thing about the introduction of the FRUs was that there was a lot of fighting that actually depleted the spawn lists(of all units, not just auto weapons or nice tanks), the fighting was much more constant instead of start-stop-start-stop like it is now, and there was good fighting even during low population.
So they should've just made them restricted by distance, fixed the whole boxes-popping-up-behind-your-attack problem. They had players ask them specifically what are they doing about FRUs during a ratchat. This was years ago, what have they been doing since then? Rapid Assault or something.
That reminds me of something else regarding CRS. As an infantryman you can't climb river walls anymore, at least on 99% of the riverlines. I could've sworn that Doc says it's because of some collider bug as a result of other changes...nothing at all to do with the many complaints that taking out bridges wouldn't prevent players from setting FRUs across the river.
It's a pity they came so late. After MSPs it was so much easier to get troops to where they are needed quickly. So other than just for laughs, why spend all that time (time collecting people + flight time) when they could have been in combat pushing all that time. I know a few battles where we heard the mission on comms, but were wishing they'd just give up (always waiting ANOTHER 5 min for that last guy heh) and spawn in locally. Would have been real tactically cool if paras had come in earlier.

Meh, that's pretty horrible. I had liked those river cities when I was doing the welcome back stuff,, as those where the times you didn't have MSP popping up behind you. Those reminded me of the battles of old with some tactics other than the 360 degree zerg. Yeah I can see with the FRU how it would make it even worse. Truck hunting with all that cover was a bit of wack a mole, can't imagine trying to get individual people from running around back.

Yeah so you think CRS could've just said "Hey we did this to help balance out the changes the FRUs brought." instead of some poor excuse that's not really believable and hurts their credibility.
Anyway I'm playing again and there's very little going on at 7:00 at night. If it weren't for a few crazy people like delems always setting spawn points and trying to get an attack going there would be nothing going on.
I was fighting in Luxembourg just now and just looking at all the structures...I don't know how someone could obviously put so many man hours in to map work yet have it look so ugly and play so poorly.
The town has got to be almost 5km from north to south with a maze of buildings, some roads and clear areas, and many capture points but it's just so boring. You could have 200 versus 200 in this town alone but with a fraction of the amount it's enough to put you to sleep.

And that is precisely the time of day I set aside to play games. When I say the game is dead, I mean very little activity when I like to play, and I'm not in TZ3, I'm talking prime time CST. You had a 60 vs 60 planned operation on the weekend? Great, but I really don't play then, what do you have the other 6 days of the week?
Figured I'd throw this in here just to show how dead the game is.
This was a planned event FYI...
I know some will bring up the Eve Online borefest, so please resist
Wow there is a name I havent seen in a while, Bluninja and CSM308.
But 63 people in a single pre-planned event isnt that impressive. I would say PS2 had over a thousand if not several thousand for there pre-planned event a couple of weeks ago. But I couldnt count it was to many.
Then there is SWG and a event held not to long ago, there was over 1000 people at that one, because over 1/3 of the server showed up for it.
I think even Wurm online or Xsyon has more players than WWIIOL currently, which is REALLY sad.

I got bored earlier and clicked "last" on this forum. It was funny to change a few pages and see guys complaining years ago about prime time being no more than 1000 and "low pop" being "less than 200".
It would be freaking awesome if our low population time was 200 players. I couldn't imagine 1000 players on the server.
I see that on the official forums some guys right now are bragging about 30 kills a minute on the server for a few hours during US prime...well US prime had better be doing well seeing all the efforts and changes the company made to bring back those allied players.

Wasn't trying to make a point.
Thought you were unsubbing from the game?
Thought you were letting it go, moving on?
Guess not
and I bet 1/4 were F2P accounts. Let's not forget 2nd / 3rd accounts by 1 player lol. Blazing numbers!

Face it, theres nothing massive about this game anymore other than its failure to maintain subscribers
Did you really just say that?
People using multiple aircraft at once? Methinks thsoe WWIIOL players really are hardcore in which case
<facepalm>
