What is up with all the chargebacks these days?

GTwanderGTwander Member UncommonPosts: 6,035

I've read a lot about the whole D3 issues, with the patch that changed values on gear bought in the RMAH pushing people to call the banks and order a chargeback based on the grounds of "false advertising"... but I was just looking through a specific game's forums and saw a poster state he played long enough to get to max level > got bored of the endgame > then demanded a chargeback for it. I am absolutely astonished.

What do you guys think?

I don't think it is fair.

There are no guarantees in life. It's like going to the movies and not getting an ending you liked so demanding your money back.

There should be a time limit where one can demand their money back for game issues.

That person paid his money and played the game. He did not "rent" it. End game boredom is NOT a reason for a charge-back. That is just stealing from the company.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Of course its not fair. These people want to play the game and they deluded themselves into thinking its gonna be awesome and once they finish they're upset.

The only thing that makes me happy about chargebacks though is most companies will ban the account that issed a chargeback. if the person wants to do such a thing, then they should be banned and lose all progress. I just hope its a batte.net wide ban. Knowing they lose access to ALL blizzard products will make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Depends on what was promised / advertised and what was delivered.  If the two do not match up then yes, getting your money back is perfectly reasonable.  If however they do match up then no.

Chargebacks should be reserved for the rare occasion where there is actual intentional fraud on the part of the merchant. For example, if they sell you a copy of an online game when they know full well that they are not ever going to bring servers online.

Issuing a chargeback just because you don't like the game or don't like a patch hurts the entire gaming industry. It makes it that much harder for publishers to offer digital purchases, because chargebacks aren't really a problem when you buy the game in a store.

Every time you buy a game, there's a risk you won't enjoy it.  If that's a risk you don't want to take, do your research before you buy.

The auction house ... well, a pox on both their houses on this one.  Everyone on both sides of the screen should have foreseen the drama of RMT plus a still-evolving ruleset.

D3 endgame isn't what most people expected.  Blizzard has even admitted that endgame in D3 isn't where it should be.  I didn't ask for a refund, but sometimes I wish I did.

    No.

The hysteria surrounding DIII is absolutely ridiculous, and mostly peoples' own fault. Nobody makes you rush to Inferno, pretend it's endgame, RMAH yourself the best gear, and then whine about everything. I haven't seen any complaints about the game that didn't involve Inferno or RMAH somehow. >_<

Just FYI, the post that said he quit because of boring endgame wasn't in the D3 section.

It was an actual MMO he played until max level and then demanded his money back. I used D3 as an example where one could at least understand where someone who does this could be coming from, and only based on changes made to items previously bought in the RMAH.

If the game at least promises to have a significant endgame, I can sort of see the complaint. Sort of.

But people just assume every game has some huge endgame and get mad when that "promise" is broken.

It's obviously ridiculous. Many posters have already said various reasons why it is so. The one who played the game, got bored in the end-game, then wanted a chargeback is delusional.

Chargebacks are OK if you cant play the game at all and if it is the companies fault.

Boring endgame is not a valid reason.

People get that the publishers and game companies have some responsibilities but many miss that you as a consumer have responsibilities as well.

Many people don´t do the few minutes of research that would have saved them from getting a game that wont work for them out of lazyness and then makes a chargeback blaming the devs.

There are some cases where a game really are so bad that a chargeback is valid though and if D3 would have continued like the first week it might have been one of them, many people couldn´t play at all. But Blizz fixed that thing up and the rest of the people could have found out what they don´t like easily enough.

Didn't legislation abolish charge backs on digital purchases in EU and USA anyway?

  • fivorothfivoroth Member UncommonPosts: 3,916

Chargebacks are meant to prevent fraud. You don't get a chargeback just because you didn't like a game.

I would love to see people who do these fraudulent chargebacks getting blacklisted - and the blacklists shared.

Pull a fraudulent chargeback on Blizzard? Never be able to make a purchase from any major developer/publisher with that card again. No Steam, no nothing.

This. What's even more hilarious is that these people still played hundreds of hours in the game. Yet most games rarely provide more than 20 hours of gameplay. Yet people don't demand refunds for those games?
