Glad to hear they had a good launch, although I wasn't worried about it tbh. I think Funcom is slowly starting to learn their lesson from previous mistakes.

All I can say is that I have experienced ZERO problems since early access.  No lag, no rubber-banding, no server crashes, no insanely long queues, etc.  I've played all the way through Kingsmouth without any noteable bugs whatsoever, and I'm well into Savage Coast now.

As long as I have been playing MMOs, I have found that crappy launches are the norm, not the exception.  In the case of TSW, I would call this a flawless launch from my perspective, and so far the game is very well polished for a launch product.

I'm really enjoying it and it's so beautiful I can't help but want to explore and progress.

I had previously believed that I would end up making GW2 my main MMO this year, but that is seeming much less likely now after playing GW2 BWE's and now TSW.  It's not that GW2 is a bad game, because I don't think that at all.  In fact, it's an exeptional MMO if you are stacking it against all the themeparks that came before it save for TSW.

For me, TSW is just different and much more interesting, at least today.  When I play GW2 it feels very much like an evolutionary jump in your standard fantasy themepark games.  However, TSW feels like a completely different game across the board, and it is much more in line with the things I prefer in MMO games.  The theme, setting and graphics alone put it on a different level for me.

I already own GW2, so it will be getting a fair chance to suck me in, but as of today I am perfectly content with TSW.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Very smooth launch, especially for a Funcom game. Only had a crash when using the in game browser. They probably need to tweak that feature. Only other problem I've encountered is that some of the investigation missions will bug out from time to time.

Kinda hard to compare this launch with AoC.... One of AoCs biggest issues was there were just too many players which caused all sorts of server problems........I havent heard any numbers yet for TSW, but it isnt anywhere near what AoC was.

I doubt most here are referring to those issues caused by population numbers. That was the least of AOC's problems and was one of the few things they handled "well" or at least quickly although as with many companies they did go overboard on the servers they added.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

To be honest that is not saying much.

That said, I've still got my eyes on this one and am curious what people say a few months on. People reached the endgame of TERA pretty quickly and reported back on how empty it is, so I'm waiting to see how long it takes for people to report back on how much content there is for TSW. I personally don't have any interest in TSW's endgame (since I hate the content) but would be happy to hear that there's enough content to justify box price and a few months of subs.

I'd guess you're a "the glass is half-empty" kind of person ? image

Over the years, the MMO players have constantly and loudly complained that levelling takes too long. So developers made it easier and easier.

However, development speed has stayed fairly constant, so games still pretty much launch with the same amount of content that they did 5 or 10 years ago. Except now players burn through content in 1-2 months due to fast levelling speeds. Then they complain constantly and loudly because there is no "endgame content"....

Bingo. Remember the hell levels in EQ.... 30,35,40,45 and 50.   You would play and play and play to get about half a bubble then in one death it would all be gone.  Now you just have to pay a repair bill for your items.  I miss the first year of EQ.

Players burn through content in 1-2 months? Try 1-2 weeks. Developers cannot keep up with that pace, and they don't need to. Just put out quality content in a reasonable amount of time ( a bit faster than Blizzard time in my opinion) and go from there.

If people played half a day, got little progress and then lost it all, it's no wonder they complained. It's no wonder the left the games behind as fast as they could. They would end up repeating the same content over and over again, with nothing to show for it. That sounds more like something designed to make players give up, not goad them into playing more.

TSW seems to have a progression path, but there's not a definite 'end'. You don't reach a max level and say you're done. Unless you count getting all the skills in the skill wheel...which seems like it would take a good, long while. So players are still going to repeat content, but they're getting something to show for doing those quests again. Not sure if this is going to be satisfactory to players, but it sounds like a slightly better plan than constantly taking the players' progress away to make them play longer.

It seems like the launch has been relatively trouble free. It's been quiet though...almost too quiet...

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I don't think the game is selling as well or as much as Funcom was hoping. Really though their estimates were simply ridiculous anyways. What this game does have is the potential to have a growing population over time rather than dwindling. But in the beginning...yeah they aren't going to be breaking any sales records. Hope they realize this.

Didn't have any major issues with my computer expect for some bugged missions that are still present in the game since CB, other than that Funcom did a Great Job on their new title.

I also haven't come across any memory leaks, crash to desktops or blue screen of death this time around on this title. So you know how I voted.

Nice article about how Funcom have mastered the art of releasing a bugged MMO,

    http://kotaku.com/5923604/with-the-secret-world-funcom-has-mastered-the-art-of-the-buggy-mmo-launch

This time I am not joking it is a nice article.  But also perhaps one of the reasons the 'anti-TSW Trolls' as it was so nicely put aren't so enamored.   I especially love this quote taken from the article, 'one might say the glitches and bugs enhance the experience'.

Just so you know this anti-TSW person  is still here but refuses to post that  much these days.  At least after a concerted effort by the 'staff' to moderate any form of open discussion on this game.  Must say didn't even know TSW had launched until I got an email today.  Nice to see some positive reviews but I am hearing too much of the same old story.  Where can I find details of sales figures? Anybody got any links. Just interested to see how well the game is actually doing.

I'd love to see the MMO that launched with absolutely no bugs.. too bad it doesn't exist.

The bugs that were found in TSW (for the most part) are related to massive amounts of people attempting to start/interrupt/click the same time as other people... bugs that are extremely hard to catch in any environment but one with a massive amount of users doing the exact same thing at the exact same time.

Rift had bugged quests too but people gloss over that.

Funcom has a patch on TestLive today that fixes almost all of those little bugs that article was complaining about.  Do it right or do it quickly.. what kind of bug fixing would you rather have?

    +1.

My first MMO was Never Winter on AOL followed by M59 then on to play almost every AAA release out there. This was a fantastic launch. Best for Funcom for sure and one of the better ones all around.

RIFT had a few less buggie things than TSW at launch but I am very pleased with the TSW product so far.

There are what... 4-8 maximum bugged quests between Kingsmouth and Savage coast.  In those quests that are "bugged" you can fix them by getting an invite to a group in another instance where it's working and meet up with them.

Out of the 120 quests between these two zones around 8 are acting weird or broken.

Some people need better math skills.. I wouldn't consider that "so many bugged quests" at all.  I had more buggest quests in a single planet on SWTOR at launch.

I was in beta for AOC, standard beta with little direct contact from the devs. I was in Closed beta for TSW and not only Dev jump in on the conversations regularly, Ragnar himself would jump in discussions and would actually interacted like a fellow gamer rather than just a Dev. They are a very cool team, I am not surprised how good live is.

Agreed, it's pretty sad to be entirely honest.

Now I ran into an issue with my character build, where one of my resource builder skills is bugged and does no damage. My main character story quest is bugged so I'm essentially stuck in one zone, since I need to finish my main story in order to move to the next zone.

So yea, it was successful launch in a sense that there were no serious server issues but sadly the game was released unfinished.

    You sure it's bugged?

What builder are you talking about?

I have finished the first two story quest chains. So I might be able to help.

The build in question is Striker, from the shotgun line. It does no damage if you use an attack which sets a hinder state. It still applies resources but do no damage.

As far as that bugged story quest, it was tier 15 of the "Dawning of an Endless Night." The part where you have to defend the ward stones against waves of zombies and such. I got kicked off the server during the Blue Mountain portion of the quest, in the middle of defending the ward stone. When I clicked the "switch server" option, I was not able to continue the quest. The mobs didn't spawn and the stone was not clickable. I was finally able to finish it today, when I saw another player doing to same quest.

Today I thought I'd make a new character on a different "dimension" to help out the lost souls with broken quests. I noticed that there was a total of like...7, one being german, one being french. I believe it was a worldwide launch?

So is the game running better than most expected, yup. Is it successful? I guess only Funcom would know.

  • FredomSekerZFredomSekerZ Member Posts: 1,156

Well, i'm playing myself, but from live streams i've seen and post all over the net, it seems to be only certain tiers of the quest, not the whole thing. Also, it seems to be less than most of all missions, so it looks quite minimal, but again, can't confirm.

Good news is that patch 1.0.1 is suppose to fix it all, or most atleast.

  • TamanousTamanous Member RarePosts: 3,030

It does indeed suck somewhat to have to dodge the off broken quest as it distracts from your first immersive impression. Spreading around your points a bit too thinly and picking mediocre powers due to learning they system slows you down a bit but I must say this:

I have been through much much MUCH ...

.... much worse launches. Won't complain too much just yet. The leveling process is so alien to normal mmo's that you are required to wrap your head around it. Once done it isn't so bad.

    You stay sassy!

Perhaps the CEO resigning has had some positive effect at Funcom.  Or did he go a day prior to launch because he knows something you don't?  Hey you want intrigue, rumors, gossip, misdirection, secret societies ... mothing more intriguing than what is happening at Fucom :)

Or perhaps his new position is just that...a new position.  He moved from an administrative role to a creative one.

I feel like it was a huge launch sales wise. But with all the positive user reviews and hopefully similar press reviews we will see some decent growth as hype grows and people try it out. It definitely feels so fresh and new to me it really does.
