Still haven't bought the game(will eventually). But I remember people being upset about character looks. And it was true that was harder to make 'good looking' female characters than fugly female characters, but I never agreed that it was impossible and really thought the whole 'issue' was massively over-blown.
No worries:

In a nondescript building in Brooklyn, a high-tech facility contains the weird science of Dr. Aldini -- a pioneer in paraplastic surgery: a method to shape living flesh into any form. For the right price. (Cue maniacal laughter.)
Players will be able to visit The Modern Prometheus to get a TOTAL makeover. From head to, well, head. Whatever you want: a new nose, a tweaked chin, a nip and a tuck to the eyes or the hairline, removing or adding some wrinkles or freckles -- you can adjust your appearance or you can become a whole new person. The only thing you CAN'T do under Dr. Aldini's assortment of distressingly rusty knives is change gender...although the good doctor is working on some experimental concoctions for that particular 'problem' as well.
At Dr. Aldini, the first 'consultation' is always free, but anything after that is going to cost -- and the doctor prefers PAX. Where he buys his arcane supplies, the U.S. dollar holds little sway.
So, no crying about the cash-shop. In game currency only.
And while I was highly skeptical six months ago (Funcom + EA, who wouldn't be) it seems that Funcom has learned a lot from it's past mistakes and is doing a very good job on fixing them.

Yeah, I read that. I don't think those griping about the character cusomization were overblown at all. It is easily the weakest part about this game and considering many use character customization to immerse themselves into their character or the game itself I think it is a pretty big deal.
Glad to see they're working on a remedy though.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Ironically, even now before the enhancements, everyone looks different.
I mean, I know that faces, hair etc. can use more options but the bazillion clothing and accesory choices (all either quest chain rewards, unlocks or bought with in-game currency..there are some in the cash shop too but I wouldn't bother) almost guarantee that no 2 players will look the same. I have never seen that in an MMO before since in other games the gear typically has the + stats and those playing certain classes tend to go for the same stuff and end-up looking the same.
To me clothing is an even bigger part of "character customization" than hair/nose/eyes etc. Heck even in games with really extensive face choices that take you an hour to do (take Skyrim for example) the clothing and armor makes everyone look the same eventually.
I guess it's the opposite here: you start out looking similar but as you play you start to look a lot different from the guy next to you with the same blue-hair.

What was over-blown was "it's all ugly and there are no options." It wasn't all ugly. And even I thought there should be more options, especially with clothing.
But, while it was difficult, I made (by accident) Sarah Palin and she was a beauty queen before she became America's most polemic "Half-Term Governor." So, while the options weren't as robust as one could wish for. But it wasn't like it was limited as SWTOR, LOTRO and many other MMOs and some 'horrible piece of crap" so many ranted about.
