And having heard of the old glory days that i wish i could have taken part in i don't blame anybody for thinking that! There have been many games that i've heard people say signifies the death of the genre. This though? This is something else entirely.
One of the things Family Guy is known for is mocking subjects that are taken seriously. Sometimes they're mocking things that people take too seriously. I think MMORPG definitely fall into this category. I can only hope that they decided to do this partially because of how seriously some people take MMORPGs. It might be nice to see some FG humor aimed at this genre. :-)
Pretty much how I feel. I wonder if the people treating video games/MMOs like untainted virgins realize just how the rest of us imagine them looking behind their computers. It's not a pretty picture.
Come off your high horses, a game is purely a source of entertainment, and FG is humorous, thus entertainment. MMO just means that you're playing it online with tons of people. If this launched as a single player console game with online multiplayer (which is pretty much what it is) no one would be bitching.

You changed your icon! I loved your old Art Deco icon. I think that is the death of the genre.
I compare this release to the myriad Disney movie games and other gimmick games based off of a cartoon or movie. They flop. And they suck. This game will be no different. There's no reason to make this game. It's not even an IP that lends itself well to the genre. But whatever, if people enjoy it, fine. I for one think it's just indicative of how desperate the investors in the genre truly are.
The only way this would be good, is if this announcement was just a really elaborate prank to troll the MMO community. And then I would get a seriously good laugh out of it. This being a legitimate game is funny... in a nightmarish way. I'm very much in the mindset that most game studios should not try and make an MMO right off the bat. They should work up to it. MMOs are the most difficult games to make, and no amount of money changes that.
How much did they pay you to not mention lag, stutter, and camoflaged kill 20 rats?
I just played it for about an hour and didn't experience any of that. I have to say that it's pretty good although it is quite heavy on the Fed Ex quests but I kinda expected that going in. The only mission I had remotely like a Kill quest was the "beat up 6 Cheerleaders to get the Megaphone" mission but just the fact that I was kicking the crap out of a bunch of High School Cheerleaders more than made up for it. The humor is what you'd expect from Family Guy and is actually pretty funny. I highly recommend people give it a go before you start to trash it.
What an amazingly self referential comment stream. Dudes (and I can safely assume most of you are dudes) stop taking yourself so seriously. MMORPGs may signal the fall of western civ, but this MMORPG does not in turn signal the fall of your genre.
You are exactly why this kind of MMO has to exist. Because there are other people needing to spend money and time on good games who have completely different chemicals thriving on the other side of the blood/brain barrier.
I played a CB for this game, and all I have to say is that's it's terrible!. It's like a 3D facebook game. Totally pointless is the best way to describe it. It's also a complete attempt at money grab.
i joined Family guy during closed beta. first of all its not a MMORPG stop saying Death of genre its MMOLOL its the kind of game you cant play like crazy all day long its just for fun 30-60min a day maybe or even less. Personally i liked the game Loved short cut scenes from TV series.
omg WoW is so much better than this! What is this crap?!?!
Kidding, really. Seriously though, back when Simpsons Hit and Run came out people would have been stoked to play this for what it is, but now people are so critical of everything to enjoy simple silly games like this. Why are people so crabby...
#TeamVainlash Why did Marceline's dad eat her fries? I mean...cause she bought them and they were hers...
;p; not such thing as dead ,if you guys read more other than just post your opinion whitough knowing then you know what its all abouth, first mmo have been taken into a diferent category like rp and fps and even tactic (rts game) are much into the mmo category and because for now its obvious there is nothing new mmo would bring ,then company are making diferent kind of game or genre into an mmo comunitie ,if they wanna do a family guy mmo then so be it (dont mean its going to be susesfull)but still they want it same whit fps mmo and probabli in new future an mmo kinda rts mechanism.

Well, that is one thing you can say about the game. They are very up front about where they expect the money to come from.
It is a little weird to run about the locations and see the FG areas, but rendered in 3D. They're a lot bigger in the game than I would have guessed they were from watching the cartoons.
The classes are based on the characters from the show, so you can play a "Stewie", a "Peter", etc. The "Brian" class is an unlock though...I guess you have to buy it.
Players start with 2 character slots and can buy more slots.
There is a lot of customization, with more available in the cash shop. It's similar to Champions Online in this aspect, but I would think CO has many more options available. The options that are available are things you'd expect to see in the show in regards to facial expressions, clothing, etc.
If the game wasn't laggy, then the animations would look really good. They are animations similar to what you'd see in the FG show. People can stagger a little bit, their heads follow the direction they're looking, etc.
Combat is pretty standard MMO fare, but outside of combat, I got a musical fart ability, which was pretty funny.
The graphics were either really good because they were true to the show, or they were really bad because they were true to the show. Players are literally running around in a flat, cartoon world, inhabited by FG characters. It has a certain charm, but I don't know how long it would last. I wouldn't go so far as to say they were meticulous in getting details in there, but there are a lot of little details that you'd expect to see in the FG world.
So, the good: It's very much like running around in the FG world. The cell shading is true to the show, and is consistent. The developers are honest about the money instead of trying to hide it or trick people into buying things. It loads in the browser, so the system requirements are not super high. It's fairly complete as far as games go.
The bad: It's very much like running around in a flat, cartoon world. It's reminiscent of some DreamCast games I've played. It's a pretty baseline MMORPG. There's no group finder that I'm aware of and there may not even be group instances. Even though you can chat in the game (there is a chat window) I didn't see any chat happening. I'm not sure if I needed to pay for chat or if people just weren't talking, or it just didn't work. Some sort of community interactivity is going to be necessary for this to work at all. The worst part is that it's laggy. I didn't rubberband, but turning got tricky sometimes because the game would hiccup and I'd be looking someplace totally different.
Overall, I think I'd have to play longer to get a good feel for the game. I didn't make it to the end of the tutorial. How big is the world? Do people form families or guilds? Dunno. I have played MMORPG that started worse than this. I've played MMORPG better than this too, but really, not too many. It could actually be something really cool.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I played this game a few weeks back and thought it was very cool. Was extremely buggy at the time, and the combat didn't exactly flow well, but the look of it and the humor thrown in was absolutely awesome. Wasn't overly fun, though.
One of the first lines from Adam West narrating was something along the lines of: "Quahog is one of the last friendly open-door communities. We lead the world in home invasion murder rape." I laughed my ass off.
So this is what it feels like to witness the death of the mmorpg genre.
[mod edit]
I'm sorry that you overlooked my sarcasm in my early post. It was an easy mistake to make. No I don't honestly believe that this mmo will be the death of the genre, it was a bad attempt at parodying posts I see regularly on this site that do say so and so is the death of the genre.
Although I don't know you I am sure you aren't deliberately attempting to be offensive?
Saying this is the 'death of a genre' (or that there ever was an end) is like saying that some kids' crappy drawing signifies the end of art. I don't understand the amount of melodrama that surrounds MMOs/videogames.
Not sure the comment qualifies either way. Could be worse, we're used to the HelloKitty Sneer™, it's just reflex.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Yes because if it doesn't have fairies or dragons you aren't interested right?

This game has a lot more depth than SWTOR, maybe they should try and do Family Guy Star Wars Parody Online.

hmm.
I wasn't able to get into watching the family guy tv show, I found it funny sometimes and I was able to watch an episode here or there if I was high.
I think I'll take a pass on this one guys, but keep me posted.
