Anyone else notice the amount of shilling taking...

TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Anyone else notice the amount of shilling taking place on the boards these days?   I am amazed at the number of shills posting on these forums these days.   I think it is worse now than ever before.  It got bad back just before SWTOR launched, but with all thse newer titles coming out it has escalated to the point of silliness.

    Dumb question: What's "shilling"?

  • huskie77huskie77 Member Posts: 354

Good question, since I don't think Teala knows.

Disclaimer: I generally like posts by Teala, just not this one.

Schilling is "selling" and I think what we are seeing is people feeling defensive about their personal enjoyment of games in the face of so many opinionated and inflamed trolls.

    Isn't a shilling a britsh coin?

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

Isn't a shilling currency used in the British Commonwealth?

But I digress, she is talking about a shill. Someone paid by an organization to pose as a customer to basically market the product.

A shill: Shill typically refers to someone who purposely gives onlookers the impression that he is an enthusiastic independent customer of a seller (or marketer of ideas) for whom he is secretly working.

When a shill operates and post to forums boards and such, like they do on websites like Pintarest, they are a shill that is shilling.  :)

Yes; unfortunately, Teala has become so jaded with the genre that she thinks anytime someone likes a game, they are a shill.

How does one "prove" shilling would be my question.

I don't believe it is nearly as prevalent as you seem to think, I chalk it up more to consumers with bad taste in MMO's. image

Or perhaps it's the inordinate amount of " This is the second coming of Jeebus OMG THIS MMO IS A 10/10" spiel?

Well, when you see people RAVING about a game that is obviously crap (not naming names), you have to wonder.  I cut my teeth on the Atari 2600 and crappy games almost destroyed console gaming forever.  The rush to grab a quick buck trashed the quality of games.  The industry didn't care if the game was actually good as long as the box art looked cool and people payed for it.  Today, for the most part, the large percentage of MMO's launched are nothing more than a quick money grab and once they get paid, they let it die. I don't blame her for feeling this way.

My first thought was that a new term for MMO failure had been coined courtesy of 38 studios (ouch...too soon?)

haha i thought it was related to curt as well and she just misspelled schilling

on topic though I think its more that since so many more people are entering betas now for these new and exciting games they are exaggerting their feelings towards them.  Because they only spend 2 days at a time with the game before release they see the best parts that have been developed so far and fall in love immediately

When your very first post is to create a thread in The Pub saying, I found this awesome game (typically some obscure, low budget, browser-based, pay to win import) and you should all come play it, and you never do get around to making posts about any other game, I'd say that's probably a shill.  The mods seem to agree, as a lot of those posts seem to have disappeared.

If you've already posted about several other games, and you say, hey, I found this really great game, then that's just a normal poster who is excited.  People who have been around a while and posted on a variety of topics can reasonably get away with posts that would be called a shill if it were your first and only post.

Your first sentence is contradicted by your second and third. If the people posting positively about TSW/GW2 are fans, and cultists of the game, then they are, by definition, not shills.

When all has been said and done, more will have been said than done.

They are validating the day-1 shills because it benefits them.

Plus, I don't think you have to be a new account to shill a game - you just have to be a completely biased poster that dances around (or completely denies) the negative points brought up. Which I see plenty of, in both GW2 *and* TSW land.

Plenty of posters are actively trying to SELL this game to the unconvinced. That is the pure definition of the word.

If anything more and more these forums mirror general underhanded political discussion. Posters act as though every thought should be accounting for all angles of a debate.Above in yellow is a prime example of that. There's a diference between ignoring or skirting around these things, and simply not giving a **** about them. Most of the time it's the latter.

Exactly. The Carnival Midways were a classic example. The Barker came out calling people to a show, people would hesitate, so a "Shill" would loudly proclaim the need to see the show. This would break the ice and get others to decide to buy tickets.

In this case low post count people proclaiming the glories of this or that new game. Justified or not, in an attempt to influence others decisions.
