Have a character focusing on AR and pistols, Templar-side. I really enjoyed this game the first day I played (clocked in roughly 5+ hours).

Yet, the second and sequential days, my drive to play has severely decreased.  I enjoy the lore, the mysterious aspect of it, the story, yet these three things are immersion killers for me and break my desire:

1) Combat animations and sequence specifically for AR and Pistols (not sure of others as havent really delved into them aside from Blades) seem overly clunky to me.  It's not just the animations per se, but the whole feel of it just doesn't feel cohesive to me...for lack of a better term.

2) Story cutscenes: I want to watch these but some of the head animations and/or models are just freakish looking.  Example: in Kingsmouth, the guy at the skateboard park.  That guy looks totally unnatural to me and reminds me I am playing a game. Also, very noticable my character doesnt ever speak in any of these cutscenes.  I think I understandy WHY, but sort of breaks the immersion.

3) Some really ugly unnatural looking player heads and faces.  This goes back to the character generator.  The choices are so limited (and frankly bad), specifically on the female side, that it annoys the hell out of me.  They  make the "people" not look like people but rather some weird monster/clown hybrid.

I really want to like this game.  I am very taken in by the whole premise of the game and I enjoy the leveless skill system, but these three things are putting me off and I just don't feel the desire to play much more.

Anyone else feel the same way?  Or is this just me being overly picky?

if you don't have the desire to play, don't play.

I play because I enjoy it, and I don't have these problems you have.

  • grimalgrimal Member UncommonPosts: 2,935

    Fair enough.

But, these three things haven't stuck out to you?  Or do they just not bother you as much?

I'm playing AR/Pistols because I want the Templar deck outfit for that build.  I was pretty fustrated with it around the end of the first zone early part of the second but once I got though the Academy quests in the second zone my options started to open up more.

Honestly I am trying really hard to not spend more than about 10-15 minutes doing combat at a time.  I fill between these with about equal time running around doing other quest activies and I find the combat accepable doing that..  If I end up having a quest where I have to do a lot of killing (rarely happens) in one spurt the combat really gets to me.  Of course if you hate the quest dialog animations/content or can't get into the lore around the world I'm not sure what else you have to take the edge off the combat.

I have the same issues. The game is actualy really good, but it just doesn't pull me in. My friend plays every day but i have to will myself to log in. Once I am in i am usually entertained for a bit, but then I start to get antsy to play something else.

Downsides: The character models and animation in the cutscenes are terrible, and combat feels disconnected.

Upsides: PvP is great, Dungeons are amazing, skill system is deep. Stories are great. Quests are better than any game I have played before.

    I don't get it  /shrug

Ok, thanks, makes me feel I am not having some. weird isolated personal issue.

Haven't gotten to any dungeons yet, maybe that is what I need to help balance the scale.  I have that same feeling of having to will myself in and getting antsy after a bit.  Not sure if that's more me or the game itself.

Anyone know how the animations were in AO?  I remember when I first played AoC I thought some of the animations were a bit wonky but not as offsetting as this (in particular, the jump animation seemed slightly off in that you landed too quickly..almost too much gravity there).

I am hoping I can get immersed again. We shall see.  Thanks for the input!

they haven't stuck out for me, it's not that I'm defending the game or don't believe you have these problems, It's just the way I am, I can't see it...

for exemple I love the combat in this game, but I see a lot of people complaining about it and I just can't understand why??!?

I played ~ 3 months in the CB, the game just nails it for me.

@rpgalon like you mention many dislike combat. It's obvious that should be FCs top priority to get more players.

I feel about the same. In my oppinion some of the folks at funcom really did a great job, others missed the mark in a big way. I treat this game as a resident evil type. My point being that game had a clunky as hell combat system but you played for the sory/lore. I'm starting to get bored after a week and will take the weekend off then come back monday fresh.

  • SlickShoesSlickShoes Member UncommonPosts: 1,019

The game has had the opposite effect on me, the more I play the more I want to play.

However I did play AR spec in beta and found it utterly boring, i got fed up with the game pretty quickly, got a bit depressed and uninstalled it competely. I went back the next weekend because a guild mate was still playing and found some abilities I liked and have been enjoying it since.

Bottom line, the combat is pretty uninspired and some of the weapons just plain suck depending on what you prefer so it's not unbelieveable that this is dragging down your whole gameplay experience.

Couldn't agree more. I tried out Pistols/Elemental post launch and like the animations and effects there. The cartoonish smoke from the pistols is just so cool. :D

Anyway, the more I play a game, the less I look at the graphics. I stop noticing I am playing Diablo 2 at 800x600 after an hour or two, so no way am I being bothered by the graphics in TSW.

I have a theory though: It might be that TSW ends up in the uncanny valley department due for you due to the realism? We look at humans all the time, while we don't look at orcs or trolls, so anything that's even slightly out of place might be a problem. It might be one of the reasons we have discussions going: "The grahpics are horrible! No! they are great! What are you blind? No, are you blind?"

  • grimalgrimal Member UncommonPosts: 2,935

So Elemental animation is decent?  Maybe AR is the problem for me then.  I'll look into skilling up Elementalism instead.

And to the guy whom posted the GW2  notion: since you wanted to open that can of worms, here you go...GW2 is not keeping me away.  I found my experiences with that game uninspiring to say the least.  I am getting it, will play it, but hardly expect it to keep me interested more than a few days.  It is the most over-hyped, shallowest, gameplay I have seen in an MMO since GW1 (and not nearly as good as that console game called MMO).  Frankly, I wouldn't even call it an MMO....It's about as deep as a Britney Spear's song.

    /rantover

but please keep the GW2 stuff out of my thread!

There are some pretty atrociously bad animations to be honest. To be fair though, that would never effect my desire to play a game. I play roguelikes because they're fun and challenging. *shrug*.

The killer for me was the combat, it's just dull most of the time. I'll pick it up again around first expansion or a year whichever comes first.

I'm really intrigued by the skill wheel (theorycrafting), the setting and the lore... but the animations and character models... -barf-.

Definitely a buy, after a lot of polish.

I think, when playing  video game, a certain level of "suspension of disbelief" needs to be adopted.

I see people saying that animations aren't right and faces aren't correct but how would you ave handled this:

    or this:

This desire to have perfect fidelity seems to be a recent thing. If one let's go a little then i htink one can find that they can enjoy these games a bit easier.

I remember driving my little square around my 'sword' to make sure the point would hit the dragon instead of the handle. :-)

Anyway, it's expectations. It's all fine and well to give MMORPG a break because there is so much more overhead in developing such a game, but it doesn't change the fact that MMORPG are competing with games that could have much better graphics. That has to be a consideration for any game being made.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

But this is up for interpretation.  What don't people like about the combat?  For me it's the length of time it takes to kill certain mobs.  Makes fighting tedious and un fun.  Animations though, don't bother me in the slightest.  So if they are to fix combat, what do they fix, both issues or just one or something else someone doesn't like?

To the OP, I am loving the game and not having any issues with what you described.  I personally never put much stock in facial features in MMOs.  They all kind of suck and half the time, at least for me, my camera is pretty high up so faces aren't really my main visual.  I prefer looking at the world and outfits.  Maybe hair styles.  Faces are a dime a dozen and just like RL there are nice looking ones and ugly ones.

  • tawesstawess Member EpicPosts: 4,227

have had and still have a problem with the animations.

And the fact that the game looks like utter rubbish on my computer but that is not really  FunCom's fault but rather the fact that my GFX card is an old gforce 8800.

But those two in tandem simply keeps me away.

This have been a good conversation

I've read quite a few robotics papers that touched upon human emulation that stated that the closer we get to mimicking faces and movements, the more scrupulous observers become in detecting flaws.

Perhaps the models are in some manner victims of their own greatness. Every unnatural torso twist or odd looking stride is accentuated immensely.

I noticed those issues or at least they were issues to me during the BWE they hosted. I have been playing Tera up until a few weeks ago so I was still used to really well done graphics and models. I took 1 look at the cut scenes and character models in TSW and instantly compared them to EQ and Vangaurd graphics. The game is pretty ugly if you compare it to the newer games that are coming out. However looks alone does not do it in for me. It was the animations, the skill effects, the overall combat system. All of it together made me feel like this was a cheap immitation of what TSW should really be. Which is a much better game, if they spent the extra time and money to fully polish before what i can only surmise is a premature release to be profitable. I am waiting to hear what people have to say after the full month is over, and what Funcom plans to do about it. If they dont fix the current issues regardless if you see them as major or minor, this game will be relatively non-existant once GW2 comes out. While they are not that simmilar, GW2 seems to offer a lot more polish then TSW atm, just from BWE's.

I hope Funcom can pull a rabbit out of their hat if they hope to break even before they are forced into f2p models. Although TBH I would prefer to see TSW as a f2p model game, I would def play it at that point. I hope everyone that purchased though is ultimately happy with the game and wish them long hours of awesomeness.

Im having fun but I can see that they could have done some polish.   At least they got room to grow and improve if they do follow through but that doesnt seem the norm even with SWTOR they dont seem to be making giant leaps to fix the major flaws.    This might be just a cash grab.    People disapointed with currrent mmos might throw down 50$ to play a new game, I know because thats what I did.

After the first wave of cutscenes and intro, I have been left with killing mobs in Kingsmouth. Combat. Which is unfortunate, because combat is not TSW strong side. Its the story elements that are the selling points of TSW, but what I end up doing is constant combat. Its such a paradox, becuause the game promises a breath of fresh air, yet 80% of the time, you end up doing combat from the early 2000s... Some of the mobs even look like port-overs from Anarchy Online (rock mobs).

The inventory is a mess, and the UI elements are 2d and uninspiring. I havent played a game before where I actually end up dreading having to open my inventory. I avoid opening it like the plague. Im hardly able to find a thing in there...

Investigation missions are really cool, and the part where you need to go to the town hall and look in the archives for the kingsmouth 2002 murders is a good example. The sad part is that the last 2-3 days I have only had 1 or 2 of those kinds of missions.

"Less is more", they say. In TSW it seems they have gone the other way around. I hear they jam pack zones with mobs further on, while I, on the other hand, would find the mobs much more scary if there were fewer of them, and you never know when they might pop out at you. If you wade in them, they loose their effect.

The way I know myself (I am becoming a dinosaur at the age of 34), I wont be playing TSW for very much longer. I wish it the best though! We need the variety it brings to the mmorpg scene.

In my opinion, AR are the most 'floaty' and ungrounded weapons of the bunch. Before you cast the game aside, try out a weapon with more puch. You might enjoy shoutgun or going melee.

That is actually good to know and perfectly mirrors what I've noticed of gaming in general.

As an older gamer Ive noticed how terribly critical people can be of laughably little things in games now a days..

And in my own example, like when I was playing Skyrim and single-handedly took down my very first giant at around 2nd or 3rd level. I was feeling every inch the conquering hero when Ayla the Huntress runs over to me and starts calling me a coward for not having lent her and her companions a hand as they took down a 2nd giant to my own. I was pretty put out by this and quite indignant that the game didn't have the AI to understand that I had just fracking KILLED a giant 20 feet from them.. they should be ooohing and ahhhhing and making a fuss over me!

Now don't think I blame Ayla though.. just the wrong time of the month I think.. ;)

Perhaps the less you have to work/imagine at your immersion, the greater your annoyance or criticism at having it broken.

We need to start thinking of MMO's as we do music or literature or the movies. There is not one MMO or one game that will be universally satisfactory to everyone's taste. MMO's don't come in one genre just as books or music doesn't come in one genre. Change and innovation is a good thing in the MMO industry just as it is in literature and music, but every MMO doesn't need to push the envelope or be cutting edge to be "good" or fun. It just needs to be good. The same is true for music. The same is true for books or for movies. Music evolves. MMO's evolve. Storytelling evolves. And in doing so, it doesn't make obsolete or not enjoyable everything that's been done before.
