Redefine the Genre

While waiting to try the Beta of Family Guy online I've come to the conclusion that MMORPG's are anything but now. When I think of an MMO I think of EQ, UO, DAOC, FFXI and...... WoW (f wow tho). 

 

Over the years other games have fallen into the MMO genre that are absolute garbage. Best example, Diablo and Farmville... I'm not getting into the Diablo argument here, but multiplayer online games (wether or not you directly interact with other players) that save player stats pretty much seem to classify as a MMO...

 

I think what we should do is find a way to redefine the NAME of the genre so those that appreciated the first generation of games wont' be confused by the crap that's put out there. Hell I really don't care of the next big MMO has an active community of 300,000 people (gasp not 10 million!). But if they're active and it's a glorious game who cares, I would not want that classified into the same genre as angry birds. 

 

What's all your thoughts and opinions of this? I was thinking of OLCA games, On-Line Campain Adventures :P... I don't know about the rest of you, but I want that feeling like I'm playing Dungeons and Dragons for the first time again. The wanderlust to return and constantly weighing risk vs reward when challenging unknown monsters.

    Semantics is defined by common usage. If MMOs are turning into lobby-based co-op action RPG .. so what? If everyone agrees that Diablo 3 is a MMORPG, who are you to say otherwise? Can you stop millions of people identify the "new" MMORPGs as MMORPGs?

    Excellent idea. I look forward to the suggestions that get put forward as we all come to a universal agreement in this thread on how to properly correct this travesty of nomenclature.

    There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

    I started a thread on this way back that got pretty big. The two most voted options were:

    VWRPG

    VOWRPG

    virtual world rpg vs virtual online world rpg

    I doubt an argument on mmorpg.com will ever form a consensus, especially since people are unlikely to c arry the message to other forums. I would, but I am so busy with other projects.

    I think the OP's point is not to stop them (or you) from playing lobby games; those will always exist.  The point is to bring back the meaning of Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games to MMORPG's.

    Single player game = one story in a world setting

    MMORPG = the world setting itself

    My point is that the meaning of MMORPG changed and it won't change back.

    Also, the term MMORPG has not changed, it's merely become more inclusive... much as "RPG" itself did*, such that games like Diablo and Mass Effect may be referenced as RPGs alongside the venerable Baldur's Gate or Goldbox-era games.
