I realize that Guild Wars 2 continues the Guild Wars lore and that if ANet had chosen another name they'd likely have to redo the lore and possibly races... but I think that the Guild Wars name carries too much baggage and the game would have been better off if it had been named something else, almost anything else... even Bob would have been a better name for the game.
Guild Wars 2 really isn't anything like the original Guild Wars. The Guild Wars 2 name implies that it's a continuation... kind of like EQ2 was a continuation of EQ or Diablo 2 was a continuation of Diablo, but GW2 is a completely different game. Guild Wars fans looking for a continuation found something akin to what Asheron's Call fans found in AC2. Even worse for GW2, people who didn't like the original Guild Wars are much less likely to consider Guild Wars 2 thinking that it may be yet another CRPG lobby game where you can't even jump.
What if Sony had named Free Realms - EQ3? It would've been disasterous!
Or what if WAR had been called DAoC 2?
I think ANet made a mistake in naming GW2 after GW since the games really aren't anything alike.

Well, at least it makes it easier to spot the people who haven't even played the game.
When you see a poster saying that GW2 is just GW1 on steroids, you immediately know he never played GW2 and he knows nothing about the game, and therefore that he can't be taken seriously ;-)

Sure you can say that but there is enough hype behind the game and PR that most everyone that matters knows that the two games are quite different.
Or maybe something like:
Tyria
Instead of:
Bob
:P
The game woula fail hard if it was named Bob.
Agree with the comment above.
When it comes to the name, well, it is more like that Anet wanted to make GW2 a living world. A living world where everything is dynamic an asd a living world there should be a histor. In this case, a history that can be touched through playing GW1. They wanted the legend of Guild Wars to live for years.
But then some misinformed people would have confused "Tyria" with "Terra", no? =P

If Blizzard didn't name World of Warcraft their Warcraft MMO, do you think it would have the amount of success it has now? The success of Warcraft 3 (and Blizzard as a company) was key factor for the success of WoW.

Name doesn't mather to me as long as I enjoy the game, and I agree with mister Korrigan.

My Guild Wars titles
As big of a GW2 fanboy as I am, I have to agree here. The main reason I never even seriously looked into playing GW was because the title, as I imagined it, said it all - guild vs guild pvp. I was completely uninterested in guild vs guild PvP at the time, and I certainly wasn't going to play a game largely designed for some other playstyle.
But as I have found out later, I was entirely wrong about GW, and I could have been enjoying playing it all this time because it is very solo and casual friendly. "Solo and casual friendly" is not something that the title "Guild Wars" immediately brings to mind.
However, I'm hoping the much, much greater press that GW2 is enjoying, and word of mouth, will overcome any issues people have that is caused simply by the title and them inferring from the title, erroneously, that the game is mostly about guilds being at war with each other.
I mean, is "guilds being at war with each other" even a significant part of GW2? Not really. So yeah, not really a great name, but you can see why ANET is kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place here - it really is a continuation of a successful intellectual property, and they want the positive benefit of that, but on the other hand the name does kind of mislead people. If you know nothing about any of it, and see a box on the shelf that says "Guild Wars 2", and you're not someone who enjoys "guilds being at war with each other", you're probably going to set the box down and keep looking.
Exactly, or those who argue nonsensically, like when you point out that they aren't using facts and they argue back saying something about "copy and paste" which was never in your post in the first place. ...weird.
I do agree OP in this thread, however a name like "changer of all things mmo" would be more appropriate as we've started seeing people who play other games who have tried the bwe's start demanding more from their monthly sub lobby coop mmos.
I would pay 15 dollars a month to play a game called "Bob, the Destroyer of All Other MMOs".
While I do agree that the name of the game could have been something else, I must disagree with the people saying that everything that GW1 and GW2 share is just lore.
Gameplay is totally different, this is true. However, what many people who didn't play/like GW1 overlook is the philosophy behind both games. There was an interview about GW1 where Arenanet were talking about what they wanted to achieve you could have used the same interview and just changed GW1 with GW2 and it would have been 99% correct.
Players not competing for resources or exp, but instead working together - Check.
Skill > Time philosophy - Check.
And probably many others, those are just the first two that came to my mind.
Haven't you ever wondered why so many GW1 players look forward to GW2? It's exactly, because of this philosophy. Yes, I'm aware that there are some people who'd just keep playing GW1 instead, but try to think of a company that introduced a sequel that was completely different from the first game and still managed to keep a very large part of their original fanbase. I don't think you'll be able to come up with many such titles. It's what I've been observing with TESO as well.
So If Wow was named "Neil" and GW2 was named "Bob" and every MMO currently made was renamed bob, that would explain why we haven't see much innovation all these years.
i agree gw2 has mixed connotations, Smed has gone on record he regrets choosing the name EverQuest 2
but if the game is good - could call it Pink Pony and it would still sell

I think a game's name can be a psychological turn-on for a lot of gamers.
"war" and "craft" are both very masculin words, shoving them together isn't a bad idea.
Its one of the reasons the word "War" is used in so many video game titles, as well. A game's name is a vital piece of the marketing scheme to get a gamer's attention... (and games are still primarily marketed toward the male gender.)
Guild Wars, isn't a bad name... psychologically. Firstly it reminds people of its history paved by the first title. Secondly it still, also, uses the mascuilin catcher of "war".
Star Wars isn't all about Stars fighting each other, just as Guild Wars isn't all about Guilds fighting each other.
But in the end... "Whats in a name?"
C'mon people. That freakin' dragon logo in the shape of a "2"... that's too cool to not use. The logo alone required the game be named Guild Wars 2.
Oderint, dum metuant.
I played both games so I know they're both different games. I will however say that playing GW1 after playing the first GW2 beta, they had some sililarities that helped me when playing the next Beta Weekend of GW2.

How dare you use Neil Patrick Harris's name in such a manner! GASP!
Actually i agree, they should all be named bob accept those games that went outside the lobby geartreadmill mmos design and did something unique. GW2 should be named Neil LOL
Why can't we just call it GW1 on Steriods?(I'm not even trying to be funny or corny.)
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

What you are saying here is spot on, as the people that matter are the ones who do their own due-diligence prior to being sucked in by the hype. It's just about using that matter between your ears which will allow you to invest in a product which suits you and the name is just that. What the product offers will not suit all thank god or we would have loads of server issues if the whole gaming community played the same game...No thanks and I hope more people dislike it to make my investment more fun.

I agree with the OP personally, after all I've read and played, I really don't understand why it was named Guild Wars 2.
Even the lore connection between the two games is tenuous at best, since there is something of a 250 year gap between GW1 and GW2, new races having been introduced, etc.
Personally, I would have named the game something else, and just used Guild Wars 2 as a placeholder name.
But then again, I also don't care that much. I'm fine with calling it Guild Wars 2.
Bob Wars 2 would get 15 million in box sales easy first day.
