so here's the deal, i was looking forward to buying this game in a few days but i am not so sure anymore. the reason is because of the fans. you guys are reminding me of TERA's fanbase alot. i use to hear how good the TSW community was and often that it was a thinking man's game for those with specific tastes, but now it looks like anything but. the forums for this game are awful here and on their official site.
any reasonable complaint thread(like the need to add incentives to hold points in fusang rather than just caps which has turned it into a massive cap trading fest) rapidly becomes a SWTOR/GW2 bash over there and here i guess it's just part of the unofficial forum code of conduct.
please tell me that this is a fringe division of fans who mainly hang on forums and the game is not populated by guys like this. TERA was not a very good game and the fanboys made it all the more unbearable. TSW looks really fun but people like the kind posting here will ruin any game experience.
Is this the same guy who said the same exact thing in the GW2 and the Tera forums some time ago or is that my imagination? I could have sworn i read the exact same thing as titles in the forums of those other two titles.
The only problem i have with "the community" right now is all the: "LFM Polaris Elite - must have Q10 epic gear with perfect glyphs and 10 years worth of TSW experience. No noobs allowed." - And the game is about a week old.
Most in the game is very helpful and have a good view on things. unless you give awnsers to someone of the quests in main chat then alot will get pissed
and are you on a more populated server? i'll probably roll on one to ensure lots of people to group with. and all i really care about is that it's better than TERA or mmorpg.com forums, which alot of mmo's and even XBL shoooters are.
The community is every game is the same. Don't fool yourself.
Once the silly chat issue is resolved in game you should do what every player should: Leave General, LFG, Help and even your society channel when you have no reason to talk about moronic issues or assist someone to figure our a quest a brain damaged monkey can do.
Keep your Cabal channel open and /chat join custom channels where intelligent and social people talk in (there are tons of them and some are very popular). Between cabal chat, custom channels and voice chat you have all the communication you can handle.
A human being can only handle so much information at once. Being tapped into every channel with thousands of faceless players who are only there to entertain themselves with no regard to others is a self-destructive practice.

that's not a big deal...the woW mentality will follow players arund for a long time, the game must basically outlast it.

well really everyones on the same server you may log on a differnt one but all can chat and group together.
First, the game community is exactly the same as every other MMO I have played. Some decent people and a lot of annoying/jerks. You asking for the information on the very same forum that you feel is bad makes me suspicious of your intent. Seeing that you have no problem with the same community in the GW2 forums makes me even further suspicious.
I hope I am wrong about my gut instinct and that you are simply an easily swayed individual who may be convinced to play or not to play a game by the same people he has concerns about.
I've come to the conclusion every game has a portion of it's community that is rotten. It is inevitable. Some games have a higher proportion of bad relative to good. In TSW there is a vocal part of the community in chat and on the forums that are quite adverse to people asking for help and use it as a way to bolster their self esteem because they think they "get" it.
The actual people you run into (mostly) and run dungeons with are generally really friendly and decent.
I'd also like to note that chat is shared across all dimensions. If for example you are in Kingsmouth, everyone, on every shard in Kingsmouth will be using the same chat channels.
TL;DR Community is no worse than any, the rotten just have a louder speaking voice.
What an unbelievably stupid reason for not buying a video game.
Amen.
It is a perfectly valid reason to not buy or not play a game. These games ARE their communities.
I have left games (Darkfall etc) because of the nasty assed culture I found there, as I did the EU relaunch for Aion. Other games have kept me there specifically for the great playerbase (Guk server in EQ2).
He is asking for your opinion on the community, not himself, and if you are part of that community you are not doing a great job of representing it tbh.
World of diffrence between teras community and TSW.
Tera's community was the 4chan or reddit community within a game, no actual conversations took place in that game just meme posts and fake conversations between someone pretneding he loved alienware and others pretending that he wasnt a troll baiting and was serious about alienware.
Also try not to mix up tsw community and the mmorpg community...every conversation always turns into a bash/comparison thread between the last mmorpg "flop" and the unreleased savior mmorpg.
The only problem i have with "the community" right now is all the: "LFM Polaris Elite - must have Q10 epic gear with perfect glyphs and 10 years worth of TSW experience. No noobs allowed." - And the game is about a week old.
There is no community. The chat is broken, still. Most people ignore each other out in the world to a point where they would stand there and watch you get killed, instead of helping out. And then you have the elitist d-bags like the ones you described.

that's funny. i have actually had some issues with certain GW2 fanboys around here and you know what? the in game community is much better. maybe TSW will be the same as well as i am hoping, but it's not wrong to be concerned and voice my concern is it?

He was asking it specifically about the mmorpg.com forum community. If I did that I would be trying to get a refund for my GW2 purchase. These forums tend to be for those trashing and defending games (no this isn't always the case, but it would be enough to keep me from playing any new mmo on the market). After playing the BWE for GW2 I found that the ingame community is nothing like the mmorpg.com community (thank goodness) thus no refund requests.
The main reason I keep bring up GW2 is because it's the only mmo I have purchased in a while and is the next "big" mmo launch, and has pretty much the same white knight issues as TSW and TERA had/have.
What an unbelievably stupid reason for not buying a video game.

i actually spread it to the official Secret World forums in the OP. i am asking because on the sites i have visited this is nearly all i see. not just mmorpg.com.

You were just asking for a buddy key, how do you know the ingame community is better in GW2 than TSW? Or did you mean that the ingame community in GW2 is better than the mmorpg.com forums? Its not clear (at least to me).
What an unbelievably stupid reason for not buying a video game.

I know what you mean about bad forum communities, but comparing it to TERA or any other game is hard to do (at least to me). I see them as pretty much all the same there are four types or so, you have those voicing their concerns, you have those voicing the things they like (for whatever reason few people do both), you have those just trashing everything about the game, and you have those that defend every aspect and/or ignore the problems. To me every game has had a similar proportion of people falling into these categories. I'm not playing TSW because I found the combat terrible, but as far as the community I don't see any more posters defending at all costs as opposed to any other recent mmo release: TOR, GW2, Rift, TERA, TSW, etc. they were/are all terrible forums at launch or leading up to launch.
This is a cesspool where we have posters calling others in the community a fringe division.
What exactly is it that you get upset by, here, that you can not confirm/deny by reading on the official forum.
Is it because we are easily trolled everytime heratless makes his hallelulja gw2 post. Where we have pissing contests over who plays the best game, where we decide if a game is good or not based on the current stock market.
Is it that we are rude, calling other out as... what was it, fringe division.
To be honest, we sting at sight. Or at least they do, those other peoples, not me. I am generally a good poster.
What is the purpose if this question you ask that contains an insult to us?
I have to agree with you as far as the forums go. I posted in the thread about how awful the way they did lair bosses was (where it was completely based on luck and extremely repetitive grinding of the same MOBs for hours on end) and I got some really hateful posts from fanboys who probably aren't even far enough into the game to realize what I'm talking about anyway. Basically just because I brought up a legitimate complaint on how repetitive farming for 5 hours straight (possibly more if RNG is not on your side) to fight a very anti-climatic 2 minute boss fight with 5 people is not good game design and they should consider upping the drop rates (not of the bosses, but the blueprints to summon said bosses), or making NPC or crafting to trade/exchange blueprints for specific ones, etc. Anything to alleviate the tedious grinding. I didn't once mention any other games.
Apparently complaining about this made them assume a number of things about my playstyle and personality. Apparently I've only played WoW and I'm a WoW kiddie who rushes to endgame and wants nothing more to be fed purple loot for doing little to no work whatsoever without any form of "challenge". What I don't understand is how these people think grinding elite MOBs I can nearly solo with a full group of people for 5 hours straight with almost no variety of MOBs type or any chance of death is a challenge... I really shouldn't have to justify that I enjoy challenges, but artificial grinds are no fun and I play games primarily for fun (don't we all?).
Though honestly this is very typical of MMO forums. True concerns and problems with the game get drowned out in the endless noise of haters and fanboys. Post something detailing what you like about the game and you'll have hundreds of trolls calling you an idiot or fanboy. Post something you don't like and the ardent defenders of the game will flock in droves to tell you how wrong you are.
Community in game has been average at best at least for me. Have seen some helpful people and others simply trolling. Most people seem to go about there own business in normal questing playing the game as a single player RPG though.
This is a cesspool where we have posters calling others in the community a fringe division.

Heh, I just spent 3 hours shampooing my carpets, I needed a good chuckle.
and yet it proved to be a real issue with TERA. before i left i counted at least 200 unique "i quit" threads citing the community. you guys are pretty god awful, but as i said i am hoping it's just on the forums.
First, the game community is exactly the same as every other MMO I have played. Some decent people and a lot of annoying/jerks. you're too zero'd in on GW2. i meant the GW2 community is way better than the GW2 forums...
you're a great example of the kind of people that i want to avoid, stop making this about GW2.
I wouldn't worry about the posters on MMORPG, a couple weeks and things will die down, and oh yeah GW2 will come out and they will pounce on it because bashing a new MMO for being a letdown is much much much more fun than playing something you like.
No negative ingame experiences - some folks earned a /ignore definitely but I think that comes with the territory. Dungeons have been amiable, most people are in the learning process. Some occasional RTFM (I.E. read the mission or check google) responses, which I disagree with. Not in purpose but in tone. Afterall what is the point of having a Help channel if you get scolded for using it?
Templar chat heats up and cools off now and then, nothing that makes me too nuts, except the random spoiler in chat! Damn them! Always F*ing up my play experience.. Damnit! I hope they get their face chewed off by a heroin addicted zombie on Elm st.! Bastards!
Anyhow, nah I wouldn't worry about the MMORPG.com community in TSW.
Oh look! The same thread that was being made about SWTOR and GW2 and every other game IN THE HISTORY OF EVER is now being made for TSW.
This is totally new! No game before the most recent to come out has ever had a fanbase with an opinion that was different from those that didn't like it.
Will the wonders of the internet ever cease to amaze? I think not!
